I was wondering when something like this would come up. I checked now, and yeah, there it is. Anyways, whilst I don’t speak for JayIsGames, I can speak for myself.
Almost all of my referrals are from my review of Kongai, about a month ago. To be honest, I didn’t expect such a high influx of users. That single review has referred over 1,000 new users to Kongregate, which is the reason for the vast majority of my points. As a result, I’m fifth all-time, beating out many users who use the website and earn points through badges, ratings, and development.
That’s not fair.
I think that the points received from referrals are far overvalued. The point of the leaderboard is diminished somewhat when websites with high traffic (like JIG, ArmorGames, and the like) passively send massive amounts of traffic and, as a result, referrals, swamping out regular users.
I didn’t realize how many Kongregate users took points so seriously until I had at least three people leave shouts on my profile calling me a variety of expletives and inferring that my mother was a lady of the night. Granted, those people were all about 13, according to their profiles, and you can’t make up very powerful arguments at that age (believe me, I know) but the underlying message was there.
It seems a little silly to be so high up the board. I’d support an alternate system of rewards for referrals; perhaps a leaderboard for top referrers, and restrict or eliminate point bonuses for new referrals.
If I’m on my little soapbox, and indeed, I am, I’d recommend cranking up points for developers as well. I think the current framework is far too low, and gamemakers aren’t nearly as compensated as they should be.
Anyway, I ramble somewhat. I know the frustration that you guys feel, and it’s justified frustration. But I can’t fix it; only the admins can.
