It was daytime when I had finally made it home, but that didn’t stop me from passing out on the bed from pure exhaustion. In fact, I’d still be sleeping if it wasn’t for the commotion that occurred some distance away. But even though I was awake, the reality of what had happened the day before kept me in bed. Disbelief, sadness, guilt; it was all there. You see, my emotions had a funny way of messing with me. The timing was always terribly off, something that became rather annoying when dealing with any change in life, whether it be good or bad. This terrible sense of dread should have been present earlier, regardless of the circumstances. But it dawned on me just now, all of it at once. Looks like it was going to be another long night.

“Crystal clear,” I reply, not breaking eye contact until Percy turns around to leave. I watch as the three men walk off with the bag of food, irritated mainly because they also took the gun. I wasn’t afraid to die, but some, if not most, of the residents here liked to play with their victims before finishing them off, and that’s the part that scared me. A gun would have been useful for whatever is left of my journey back home, but I would have to wing it for now.

The apartment I’d stop at for a break was vacant, and I made myself at home by sitting back on the spacious couch. Of course, that thought in the back of my head still lingered, whether I was followed or not, but since no one had stopped me so far I assumed I was in the clear.

About 10 or 15 minutes later, I’m starting to drift into sleep when I’m alarmed by voices outside. How was that possible? I hadn’t heard anyone on the way here. Where they just waiting for me to fall asleep? I wanted to confirm, even though I knew I shouldn’t. Pushing the curtain aside ever so slightly, I look outside and couldn’t help but gasp upon seeing Percy with two other strange-looking men by his side. The bastard had actually managed to find me, somehow.

Knowing that taking on three mutants in a fight wasn’t a smart choice, I grab the bag in a hurry and head out the back door. Hopefully I’d be able to put some distance in between us and avoid a confrontation.

“Hey, where do you think you’re going?”

Cursing in a hushed voice, I turn around to see exactly who was delaying my leave from this place. Of course, it had to be none other than a guard on shift.

“I’m sorry, I should have told you. I’m going back home… This place doesn’t really suit me.”

He comes down from the shack and approaches me carefully, one hand on his side arm. “Does Percy know about this?”

“Of course. I explained to him how I wanted to—”

“You’re lying,” he interrupts, “I would have been made aware of this by now.”

We stare at each other momentarily before I charge at the man, but he’s quicker, and in seconds has the gun pointed at my face. As he’s barking orders, I notice a pair of binoculars hanging from his neck. The bastard doesn’t stand a chance.

It takes moments for me to break the glass and rearrange it into a spike, which is then shoved deep into his neck. The guard clutches his neck as he drops the gun, and I take the weapon with me before running for the exit, not even bothering to look back.

One of the zombies took my last flag about 5-10 minutes from the finish line, but after I went under the electric fence, the people holding the medals pointed behind me to a single flag on the ground. I’m sure they put it there for one lucky person, and that was me. I look at it as an antidote from the infection. So yes, technically, I survived.

It was amazingly fun, especially the part where zombie Luigi targeted me specifically but somehow I outran him.

As someone who is pretty fast, I’d like to see how many zombies can keep up with me.

Did you have weapons to shoot them with (like nerf) and they dropped down?

We didn’t have weapons, only three flags attached to a belt (like flag football), that symbolized our health. If the zombies manage to take all three flags before you cross the finish line, you’re infected, but if you cross with at least one flag, you’re a survivor. Youtube Run For Your Lives and you’ll see some of the action.

They’re those Chaotic mutants that are little more than bloodthirsty monsters that can do nothing but kill. We’re apparently calling them “Sharks” because that’s what they were called in the original Ather City game, or so I’ve heard.

Most of them had eaten, with the exception of a few stragglers who apparently didn’t have the best sense of time. As I joined the latecomers, I eyeballed the pantry and mentally planned what I was going to take with me. Part of me felt a little bad for doing this to Percy and Charles, the only two people I knew here, but I’ll be damned if I sleep in a barn tonight. The only thing wrong with my apartment is the damn broken window, but that was something that could be easily fixed. Either way, it was going to be nearly impossible to track me down, so the only worrying thought was simply getting out of here without being caught.

Once I was alone, I moved without hesitation. They were low on water, but I took a few bottles for the road as well as to stock up back home. Some fresh fruit also went into the bag, they were good to save for later on. Lastly, I grabbed a loaf of bread and began to walk off as I zipped up the bag, glad for the little light the moon was providing tonight.

“Here we go,” Charles says, reaching into the small pantry to extract a loaf of bread. "It’s not much, but I figure it would keep you full until suppertime.

I take the bread and thank him rapidly before taking a bite. “I’m sure some water will seal the deal,” I add, hoping he would get the idea.

He walks over to another shelf and grabs a bottle of water before tossing it at me. I manage to catch it with one hand, and smile at him in appreciation. “Don’t throw the bottle away when you’re done, we keep them around to make it easier for the rest of us to have access to water.”

“You got it.”

With that being said, I walk back to my designated rest spot. Looking around, I noticed there wasn’t any glass in the immediate area. I was at a disadvantage if things turned ugly… but I would worry about that later.

“Pleasure meeting you”, I reply, shaking his hand; “I’m Annelise. Percy insisted I follow him back here, it seems that he’s a bit overprotective when people’s lives are at danger.”

Charles nods with a warm smile.

“Not that I’m completely helpless. I’m able to protect myself most of the time, but I guess some extra security wouldn’t hurt.” You’re rambling too much, change the subject. “So, uh… I was looking for some food, but I have no idea where to go for that. I haven’t had anything since yesterday and would really like something to eat.”

“Come with me,” he replies, guiding me across the barn to what I assumed would be a kitchen of some sort. Hopefully they had good food to offer, I was rather picky when it came to such thing.
