Topic: Heroes of the Realm / Attack & Defense Explained

The overall strength of an army is usually measured by two indicators, Attack and Defense, but understanding how these two indicators are composed is as important as the whole big numbers.

Individual Hero Attack

All heroes can do three types of damage, and the class of each hero will determine the combination and effectiveness of the damage:

Physical damage: composed by a base random factor, the hero’s strength and the hero’s base Class attack

Magical damage: composed by a base random factor, the hero’s intelligence and the hero’s base class attack

Elemental damage: composed by elemental gem enhancement, and the natural element percentage gain

Fighters and chargers have a base random factor between 0.8 and 0.99 for Physical damage; defenders have a base random factor between 0.7 and 0.89. These units seem to have a base random factor <0.01 for magical damage.

Casters have a base random factor between 0.8 and 0.99 for Magical damage and it is said that some high tiers have a base random factor =<0.1 for physical damage, but most casters have a base random factor <0.01 for physical damage.

Ranged units are tricky. Some seem to have a base random factor between 0.7 and 0.89 of physical damage plus a base random factor between 0.2 and 0.39 of magical damage, but I have not confirmed this combination.

While base class attack is fixed, the base random factor is modified depending on the unit attacked based on effectiveness, and the strength and intelligence are modified by several factors: level ups, upgrades, rehires, items, collection bonus, army enchantments, hero enchantments, guild skills and hero skills.

Individual Hero Defense

All heroes have three typed of defense, each for each kind of attack:

Willpower: protects against physical attacks

Wisdom: protects against magical attacks

Elemental resistance: protects against elemental damage

These seem to have not a base random factor and their effectiveness is constant while protecting against the intended kind of attack, however, they can get modified by the same factors that modify strength and intelligence: level ups, upgrades, rehires, items, collection bonus, army enchantments, hero enchantments, guild skills and hero skills.

If somebody has done further research or find inconsistences at this article, please share and comment, this is sole based on my observations.

Topic: Heroes of the Realm / 5 Misconceptions about this game new Kong players may have

After reviewing a series of common questions at my guild and the game’s chat, I have found that some Kongregate players have a series of misconceptions about this game, mostly because of direct comparisons with some other CCG at Kong. So, I hope the new players find this document handy:

1. This game is all about collecting the strongest tier 3 or higher heroes

Kong has some games such as Tyrant and BAM where the cards have a clear hierarchy of power and advantages, HOTR doesn’t. The strength of the army is not determined by having “the best cards” but about how you determine the interaction between 6 key aspects: heroes’ condition, heroes’ level & stats, heroes’ skills, army synergy, army AI, and army formation. The variation between all of this is so random that it is impossible that two players have the exact same army, even with the same ten cards. Also, you have different fields for playing: arena, coliseum, and portals. At each, some strategies work better than others.

2. The game’s functioning is designed to by cubics in order to progress faster

Opposed to the majority of the CCG at Kong, the use of real money does not gives you real advantages for moving faster within the game. HOTR is in fact, a waiting game. The higher levels you reach, the more you discover that some buildings take even a whole week for completion and leveling heroes from level 20 to 25 takes 300% more time than leveling from 1 to 20. Also, you can’t buy energy. Cubics (real money) are used mainly for enhancing and fine-tuning, such as skills re-rolling and some special items that makes thing easier, but not faster. Also, Soul Stones (SS) the currency for getting new cards, can be acquired through several ways (temple, invasions, coliseum) making the expense of cubics in SS unnecessary.

3. Tier 1 cards are useless starter cards

Most CCG at Kong provide a starter pack of mainly standard low level weak cards that the player use for a couple of battles unless he realizes that in order to progress, better cards must be acquired. At some point, none of these cards are usable in the long term and become obsolete. At HOTR this is not a rule. Yes, most of the t1 cards are designed to loot money or have very unattractive skills, but some t1 such as Roviah, Feras, Lonia, Derek and Liena can be seen at the Champion’s League because of their usability and longevity. In fact, to get the rank 4 or 5 collection bonuses, some t1 cards are involved even they are not any good outside the collection, such as Johan at the Exorcist collection.

4. Tier 4 and Tier 5 are always the best cards

Some of the greatest achievements of HOTR it is the random factor. Almost all of the events at the game are affected by a certain level of randomness: skills, card condition, PoL, hero hiring, stone upgrade, etc. The usefulness of the cards is affected by this as well. In order to have balance in all aspects, getting aT4 or T5 at the oracle is not warrantee of getting a good card. Perhaps, its powerfulness is 10%-15% above a T3 and only the chances to be better than a t2 is 20%-25%. There is a t4 list of death will all the really bad t4 cards.

5. The best cards are those with the most powerful skills

Unlike Tyrant or Mythos and many more, Heroes’ skills are trickier than expected and is a very well-known factor of failure at PvP combats. In fact, knowing your heroes and how all their skills interact take some time. It is not strange to see how a stunned opponent gets also a fear and bind chained. This represents the waste of two skills at an already neutralized opponent rather that an advantage. Confusion and illusion are skills that new players overuse having a series of confused enemies that are then affected with blind, neutralizing the possible advantage confuse generates.

Topic: Heroes of the Realm / Arena 2.0 Celebration Event

Come on people! The old arena was an “attack all the lower level members” scheme for most players, how can you explain those former 40Win 0 Loose? Let us try it, I also felt too tough the change after losing all my battles the first arena day, but then came back, upgraded two times my arena and now I am actually enjoying it even more than the later version.

Topic: Tyrant / Card Pack Ideas

I like very much the idea.
I like even more the possibility to have some kind of especial “reward packs” instead of some useless reward cards. I will positively be working in a 25-card proposal; meanwhile, these are some ideas for the imperials. I think they are balanced but input is welcome:

Imperials
Deacon’s Base

Kamikaze

Recon Drone

Decoy

Infiltrated agent

Sniper

I certainly would like to use those criteria If there is a source to obtain them. Any suggestions?

So far, we can create a bayesian correction of the “best faction” based on the following information available at the fansite:
Faction Rating
Conquest rating
Conquest tiles
% of wars won
Total wars
% of average progress of members
Average level of members

Let me do some numbers and asumptions to create something like the “ultimate faction rating” or so.

Have a nice weekend.

Bad tables bug me almost as much as unreadable ones. A slightly more intelligent way to have run the data would have been to taken CR/tile as a metric. that would reduce most of double biasing of conquest.

Thanks for repairing the table. I like your reasoning on the CR/Tile relation. I will use it on my next version of the score.

Nice aproach. I think I can think about some bayesian score, but for that I need to consider the top 50 factions in those three categories.

Let me see what I can do.

7 Germans

9 Dragons
10 Bad Beat

Based on what?

A normalized score. As my faction has fallen, I was doing simple statistics with the TOP 10 list and found that we have 3 different criteria to sort the best faction: by tiles, by Conquest Rating and by Faction Rating. So I averaged the three criteria of the top 10 for each category and normalized the numbers.

Here is the full score for anyone interested, I’m doing this just for fun:

Rank Faction Tiles CR FR Z_Tiles Z_CR Z_FR Score
1 Noobz 31 77 5579 .788 1.115 .480 2.382

16 Men of Mayhem 25 25 5799 -2.501 -1.829 .843 -3.487
Average 30 57 5288

For those interested, a Z socre can be read as “standard deviations from average” in its simples way.

Incredible example of a quite unbalanced and inviable card. Attack 2 + swipe + berserk 2 = 2×2×2= 8 total damage at the first attack!

I think several posts does not consider the balance criteria and are only collection of their favorite skills.
