Just to be clear, I can still work on/improve my game right? I just can’t update the link people are judging (not that I actually can anyway on fastswf).

Got quite a few changes planned and i’d like to get started on them but not if doing so is going to get me disqualified or something just because I wasn’t clear on the rules.

Planned Changes Improvements:
- Saving/Loading Data (Which was partially working for the contest but I disabled due to not being fully working)
- Death/Failure states (Was also partially working but disabled due to not having any visual identifiers for it yet)
- Improvements to the Day Passing/Aging Cycle (adding a calender/date shown on screen to better show this)
- Leaving the House for new events/mini games (Bingo, Food Shopping, Clothes Shopping)

1st. Hamster Ate My Grandma – Jarizappa
2nd. Gone in 10 Days. – Halysia

I felt like Jarizappa’s entry best met both the theme and mechanic so it takes first place for me, and whilst Halysia’s was fun and very well made it didn’t incorporate the Grandma element very much but the level of polish, etc still gets it 2nd place.

Money – Not yet, it was originally going to be used for Bingo/Shopping, and with her pension only coming every 7 days you’d have to balance the books a little to stop her starving.
Sleep – Yeah she can fall asleep on the spot if she gets too exhausted.
Death/Loss – Not yet implemented, I mean I do have a death state.. and the needs stop decreasing further, etc.. but feeding her or whatever “resurrects her” so i’m leaving it as it is for now.
Moving Rooms during actions – Bug which I just found and fixed :)
Food Bar – I’ll check that, sounds like a bug… which I thought i’d already fixed.

Just added her Bed (in the bedroom obviously) so it’s pretty much there now. Thanks for the feedback :)

Well i’ve been drawing stuff for so long my hand is currently aching, but I got a lot of progress done. There is something close to a playable game (well more like virtual pet simulator than game), all the needs are working and there is a prop/action which affects each need for the player to use.

You can move around her house to get to each room and prop and just about keep her alive. Only room which is currently missing is the Bedroom.

Still need to add the bedroom (as a crucial game feature), and then hopefully i’ll find time to add a few more things like leaving the house to go food shopping and play bingo, etc.

Not managed to get that much done today, but I have got the “Bladder” need working now, and a little of the comfort need.

Her bladder need increases over time, and increases faster when she’s eating (and drinking) and she’ll pee herself if her bladder need maxes out (causing massive discomfort) until you change her clothes (which isn’t added yet).

Gotta finish off the Comfort Need (you’ll probably let her sit in a nice comfy chair to restore that), add the loneliness need (decreases after a certain period with no actions used) and hopefully get the bingo mini game added in time.

Here’s my update for the day.

Got the basics of her “Happiness” value and “Hunger” need in there, she gets hungry over time.. and happy or sad depending on how hungry she is.

You can also feed her to keep her hunger from hitting 0.

I just wrote a quick “Stats Bar” class which draws a basic bar for showing health or stats. Just give it a few parameters and it draws the bar for you all handled by flash’s native graphics.draw stuff.

It wasn’t a huge amount of work and I know you could probably all write similar code yourself but I figured why not share it with you guys anyway, might save someone else 5 minutes.

@bakill15: Loving the progress so far, keep it up! I don’t have an active wordpress account (nor the desire to make one or find/recover my old one), so I’m going to respond to your comments here. For this month in particular, I’ve split the theme into either a grandma-based game or a virtual pet-based game. Feel free to incorporate both, but I won’t disqualify any game this month if you have at least one of the two themes.

You might wanna change the header to say Grandma OR Virtual Pet (rather than AND) since that’s incredibly misleading right now.

EDIT – And some more progress from me. Meet Granny, and if you’re feeling particularly cruel, you can make her wet herself.

My Votes:

1st: Invasion Evasion – AwesometacularVG

Like mine your actual gameplay is a little lacking, but the general driving around and destruction element is so much fun it doesn’t matter so much. I found that braking usually resulted in death so im not sure what the point of that was.

2nd: Skater Cop – AdrenaliteStudio
This takes second place because of the graphics, the gameplay is kinda repetitive and I found myself able to win by just spamming the shoot button. I’d like to see more types of obstacles and some kind of objective in heading towards, but not a bad entry at all.

A lot of the others seem unfinished/work in progress so i’ll hold off on feedback for those.

Ok here’s my entry: Outbreak City

Sadly lacking a little on actual/proper gameplay (I didn’t get the wave system working in time so it’s still just spawning random waves), but I did get Stench Zombies working, and some visual effects to pretty it up a little.

4 Towers: Pistol, Smg, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle
3 Enemies: Walker, Tank, Stench

You can only place towers between waves so you probably want to place them all first.

Sorry in advance for the double post, but the thread is seemingly kinda dead.

Got a lot of work done this morning, tower placement and stuff is in… need to get the weapon changing system working ASAP and if I get time i’ll setup a wave manager to actually have some playable waves in there.

I doubt i’ll have time for the upgrades and stuff i’d planned which is a shame.

In the mean time i’m creating a basic name generator to name my survivors, and it’s got support for custom/unique names (as well as randomised ones), so if anyone wants to appear as a survivor (or has suggestions for cool unique names) let me know within the next few hours and i’ll pop you in :D

Got some towers in there and infinity enemy spawning so you can see them in action, the health of the zombies will slowly scale up on each wave but I expect it will take a while before the guns stop killing them easily.

Bit of an update from me, not much to show visually but I got (most of) the enemy targeting working for my tower defense, going to have 4 target choices (Close to Tower, Close to End, Highest Health, Lowest Health). Just gotta code the final thing for it, and a way to override those choices specifically, by selecting a unit (to show it’s info panel) it will also make all towers that can target that enemy, do so.

Anyone got any advice as to how to handle the tower placement (in terms of ensuring it’s a valid location and doesn’t already contain a tower, or enemy pathing area, etc)

EDIT – Couldn’t sleep, got most of my enemy pathing working too, using an array of points system where the enemies walk to the next point in their array and then when they reach the end they can attack the basecamp.

Obviously I might create a few unique ones for bosses (if I get that far) but they would be variants of these.

The Walker zombie is your ordinary basic enemy

The Stench Zombie is a bloated, gas filled foul smelling zombie which releases a cloud of stink when killed, choking and stunning enemy survivors (the “towers” of the game) who smell it.

The Frenzy Zombie becomes frenzied when he takes enough damage so has 2 states, his normal walk/attack animation.. and the frenzied one.. which is basically just him frenzied up and moving faster when close to death.

The Glowing Zombie is a radioactive/mutant one which regenerates it’s health when not taking damage.

The Tank Zombie is a bigger, stronger but slower version of the ordinary walker zombie.

And the Boomer is a monstrous mutated zombie which must be killed before it reaches your base or it’ll explode dealing massive damage to your defenses.

Nope link doesn’t work, I think you can set specific people as allowed to view in the settings somewhere. But it’s probably easier to throw up a fastswf link.
