HOMESCHOOL [Writing Competition] ~ Round 1: Short Stories
Lost In the Crowd.
As a note, I dislike Black Friday due to all the chaos. I also lost my steam about halfway into writing this.
The moon was rising, and the clock tolls would soon herald the blood soaked midnight.
Laura checked her survival pack and fiddled with her gear. A combat knife, a medical kit containing bandages and rubbing alcohol, some knotted ropes, rations, a taser, and in the event she were to face a fate worse than death, a cyanide pill to escape the horrors.
The long lines of explorers seeking fortune was growing agitated as they made peace with their loved ones, and said their farewells in the event that they didn’t make it back alive. Around this time one year ago, Laura had seen the gates of Hell open. No, Hell wasn’t filled with fire, brimstones, and demons, Hell was filled with neon lights, discounts, and shoppers consumed by greed and possessed by bloodlust.
Five minutes until the gates the open, and a massacre between customers would take place. Five minutes until the dreaded Black Friday. Taking this time, Laura reminisced about the events one year ago. She was so naive back then.
One year ago, she entered the world of Mall Brawling, and accompanied Bob Johnson, one of her long time friends, and a veteran at mall expeditions during Black Friday. She didn’t know the dangers about the mall back then, and Bob loaned her his knife in the event that she got in a dangerous situation.
“It’s not a war zone in there Laura. What’s inside is Hell, are you sure you want to come? If you’re not prepared to die for the discount, then leave.” Five minutes before midnight, Bob Johnson offered Laura one last chance to leave. However Laura was adamant in staying.
“Okay, listen up maggot. Remember, the first rule to shopping on Black Friday is that you don’t own an object until it enters your house, and even then, it might be up for grabs. Barricade your house when you get home. Anytime before that, you’re free to take goods off of other, and they’re free to take them off of you by any means necessary. Rule two, if you don’t want your blood to cover the floor, make sure it’s someone else whose blood’s on the floor.”
At first their expedition went well as there were only occasional minor stabbings over line disputes, and only a few handfuls of people were trampled to death in the lines outside the mall. Once inside however, events took a turn for the worse. Nyantendo had recently released their newest console uNyan along with killer triple A gaming titles such as Super Maria Sis. that featured a turtle who went on an adventure to liberate her lands from an evil plumber that built pipes all over her forest, and the newest entry of the Getroid:Crime series which featured a suave kleptomaniac gentleman space thief named Samuel Erin who was actually a robot underneath a layer of human skin.
Laura held onto Bob Johnson to avoid being separated, only letting go to let Bob fend off shoppers who attacked them, or if Bob needed to sneak behind a shopper with valuable goods to break necks in order to obtain the deal. Ambushing the adversaries behind shelves, or even pushing down the shelves to crush those on the other side, Laura began learning her trade from the master, however this would not last when they passed by the electronics sections.
As they passed by the GameStart Bob and Laura were caught in opposing customer currents. Some of these customers have been dead for over half an hour, however their bodies were kept in motion from those behind them, whether they were customers shoving these bodies and circulating them across the mall, or if these bodies were pushed by other corpses caught in the current.
No matter how much they tried grabbed each others hands, they couldn’t resist the currents outside of GameStart. At some point Laura she saw other customers beginning to bite and eat Bob due to the excessive hunger they’ve been building as they waited in line, and without the knife he lent to Laura, he quickly succumbed to the crowd. That was the last time she ever saw him, and as she was pushed further through the crowd, she heard the last words Bob ever said to her as he screamed one last advice for her, “Check the back for the best deals, then can go up to eighty percent off.” She wasn’t sure if Bob managed to leave safely, but from that point on, he was labeled as a missing resident.
Later on she would manage to team up with several others, however each time she would end up separated from them, often through a gruesome and excessively violent death. One notable encounter was with a fellow novice mall spelunker who was impaled to death by a book.
Elders and children were left behind. Some people brought home the wrong babies, or used their babies a decoy. Coworkers violently push each other off of the third floor when they saw the same office supply store. At some point, even the staff joined in and abandoned their post to fight for the biggest discount. A few survivors, both customers and employees banded together to barricade their stores with whatever material was available whether it was shelves, products, or corpses. Those that took too long to pay through methods such as checks were executed by crowd hive mind.
Vultures would scavenge the battlefield for dropped goods, wallets of the fallen, or even take the organs out for selling. What the vultures didn’t clean out, the law enforcement that arrived confiscated and took for their own. In the end, Laura only managed to get a fancy plush elephant (yes, I’m actually only putting this in because of the Kongpanion fiasco) at a ten percent discount.
As she relived her memories in her heads, the clock struck midnight. The festival of madness that’s called Black Friday has begun once more, and this time she intended to come out as a winner. In the back of her head she though “perhaps this isn’t Hell. Even devils would cringe at the sight.”
