Topic: The Arts / Fiction tropes

Post your reimaging of how a common science fiction or fantasy cliche in books, movies, games, etc. is portrayed and an explanation of what you chose, why you chose it, and how you changed it.

Mine is faster than light travel. This is necessary in many science fiction books to explain the ability to travel between stars and in order to create interstellar societies. Most versions of this technology are either glossed over by using some sort of “warp speed” or explained through a way to bend, fold, or section the fabric of space time, as with the Rosen-Einstein bridge. I chose to go with the latter. My technology, called the Gravitational Attracter, would utilize the pull of powerful gravity wells to allow ships to travel almost instantaneously over many light years worth of space towards the center of whatever gravitational attraction was being targeted. The way that the jump would work is that a ship locks onto a specific gravitational pull and accelerates exponentially towards it. After passing the point of light speed the ship would no longer exist in physical space but would instead be pulled along the particle connections predicted by M and string theory. The flaws with this approach are immediately obvious so a few restrictions and rules have to be put in place. First off only massive gravity wells could be targeted with any degree of accuracy, such as those produced by stars or black holes. The jump would have to be reliant on several factors. The mass of whatever was being transported, the distance between the point of departure to the gravity well, the amount of gravitational pull the ship is experiencing at departure, and the ability to accurately come out of the jump before being catapulted into the center of a star would all come into effect. Any change to the factors of a transportation would have to be exponential (for example a star that is ten light years away requires one-hundred times the power and speed compensation for mass as a star that is one light year away) This would mean that most vessels would only be equipped to make shorter jumps as they wouldn’t be able to efficiently compensate for the rate of acceleration over greater distances. Most longer jumps for these vessels would occur only with the help of larger stationary tethers at the points of departure and arrival that would provide the necessary power for the ship to compensate. In short as the distance and mass being transported increases the power needed to compensate for the vessels acceleration also increases. This could also theoretically allow for gravity well “blockades” by shutting down tethers and creating a containment field that would destabilize entering ships and stop them from being able to jump successfully.

I’m getting a London feeling from this. The fog along with the tower and what seems to be a bridge behind the mist in the background is giving me a definite sense of Elizabethan rooftops.

Ruins by Orson Scott Card. It’s the squeal to Pathfinder and an amazing book. If you like interesting questions about the nature of humans and machines, time travel, and moral responsibility but also want a good story then you should read it.

Topic: Serious Discussion / The world and our perception

1:“Intelligence” is simply the extent to which a person meets a set of measurements that only have validity and meaning in a society structured around those measurements. Depending on what you are measuring dogs could be far more “intelligent” than average humans. That being said if we are talking about the traits which are currently considered to represent high intelligence (problem solving ability, memory, pattern recognition, etc.) then I would say that any inherent advantage in metal capacity provided by circumstance or genetics is superseded by the iterative nature of how these skills are applied to society. Sure you can have an IQ that’s 100 points higher than someone else but without access to the wealth of reasoning, discussion, and example that people in today’s society have access to you will not be able to compete. A genius building a rocket from scratch will never beat an idiot with blueprints. In a way this is and is not a great equalizer. One the one hand it is impossible for any one person to contribute for than a few tiny scrapes on top of the stockpile of understanding that the human race has acquired. On the other those people who are making the decisions today will have an enormous effect on future generations and those decisions are in large part speculation. The best computers in the world, given enough data, can reduce any situation to a set of possible actions, outcomes, and probabilities but the true power of the human mind that I think will move the world and society forward is the power of inference, extrapolation, and that special brand of stupidity that we call creativity.
2: Yes. To the extent that we are envious of accomplishments and traits that are desirable in other people it is a great emotion. The problem occurs when we want to get to the same level as those we are jealous of by pulling them down rather than bringing our selves up.
3: That’s a trick question. I could easily say that a new color would be “Clotuqk” but in order to have any perception of what that color would be or to describe it to someone else I would have to use concepts that come from my knowledge of what colors are which in turn comes from what I’ve experienced. It’s like explaining color to a blind person. The only way to do it is through using some other sense that you think provides a stimuli similar to that provided by color. As far a being “unique” goes any thought or idea we have is based upon information and experiences that we have already perceived. The true ability to create something new comes from the synthesis of information through our own view of the world and widely variable set of circumstances that we are under.
4: Money is simply control over resources. The more money you have the more control. Personally I believe that only two things have ever created a “better” society: the increase of education and the decrease of scarcity. Now before you start calling me Marx I’m not calling for the redistribution of wealth but rather its destruction. Think of Jacques Fresco and the resource based economy. If you haven’t heard of the idea it was mentioned in many post industrial revolution works including 1984 by George Orwell. The basic gist is that technology exists which could, if implemented correctly, increase factors of production to that point that shortages of medicine, food, and energy would be virtually nonexistent. In such a society social mobility would not be destroyed, there would be no restriction on the ability of privet citizens to trade freely, and there would be no need for regimentation. The only difference would be that the essentials of life would be so abundant that supply would overwhelm demand to the point where companies and governments would no longer be able to gain power from providing or withholding the necessities of life. It has been argued that without the pressing threat of starvation or the imminent threat of a market crash innovation would cease but actually if you think about it the vast majority of the the worlds greatest innovators where either trying to eliminate scarcity or achieve something which had nothing to do with the subject. For example Eisenstein would have been just as interested in physics even if he’d been living is a society with enough food that there was more then anyone could eat. Education is fairly self explanatory in that the better equipped a population is to understand and effectively solve the problems facing it the healthier the society will be.
5: My overall aim in life is to promote a society where people are encouraged to be responsible citizens through community based involvement in problems at all levels of society. A society where people challenge and encourage each other to continue learning and growing throughout life while staying active in shaping the future of their society. I want to help create a world where people choose to engage in constructive and collaborative dialogue about problems that face the human race.

I have amazing internet and im always connected. Just get a 360 if you dont have internet.

I like having a camera and microphone in my house that I can’t see if it’s being monitored and constantly needs to connect to the internet. I have nothing to hide

Plus it will have Halo 7 and Gears of war: Electric boogaloo

Cant wait for the Xbox One. Everyone should buy an Xbox One

XBOX ONE IS GOOD XBOX ONE IS GREAT

First off no. Second off the entire DRM discussion isn’t just about used games, it’s about Microsoft being able to shit all over legitimate consumers in order to insure that people are only able to play on the system by paying exactly what Microsoft and it’s publishers think you should pay. Third region locking is yet another example of the mind boggling disregard microsoft has for consumers in all countries. Fourth the 360 is older then a lot of the kids who will be playing on it if they aren’t able to get a steady internet connection. Fifth you can turn your camera and microphone off if you don’t want to be recorded, on the Xbox one any time it’s on (even if you’re just using it as a cable box) it can monitor you. Sixth okay it does have a good exclusive line up but it hardly beats Sony on that count and half this shit is coming to PC anyway (see first) so why the hell would you waste your money on paying for the yachts of the horde of idiotic plutocrats who run Microsoft and apparently think that there are no repercussions for shitting all over the people who they are marketing to.

Can’t believe I actually got trolled enough to answer. Good flame post I suppose.

Actually what I think the OP was saying was that the devs of the game don’t follow this forum very closely so if you’re going to make a suggestion then you should do it on the official forums where it’s more likely to get heard. Also a bunch a petition threads that the devs are never going to see here just make it harder for this forum to serve its purpose which is to help the players of the game.

Honestly, if any ship is OP its the two premium ones. The ANT can teleport to safety whenever they want, and the other one has a high damage beam, high damage poison shots, and can turn invisible.

I just got 9 kills in one game with angel on an ANT with a 2.5 K/D ratio stat. Both “premium” (they can be bought with in game currency not just real money) Are pretty crappy at close range. The angle on the other hand can vent over and over and over dropping speed by 40%. 40%! And can outdamage every ship in the game besides the jab at point black range. And even the jab dosn’t stand a chance if they don’t hit with the rush on the opening.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Vorp!] How to stop leaving games

In other moba style games if one team is in an unrecoverable position they can choose to surrender rather than make the game drag on for another ten minutes. Usually by the time it is impossible for one team to win their is notheing left to be “learned”. If my team is outplayed sitting in my main for ten minutes because all of the other structures have been destroyed isn’t going to help me get better, in fact you know what it’s gonna do? It’s gonna make me leave. If there was a vote to surrender system where a team could vote to surrender far fewer people would leave games.

Topic: Dawn of the Dragons / Quest Boss Updates

This game already requires grinding. It requires grinding in its worst most uninteresting form. Now that has been made a million times worse for plays that have energy dumped which, to be honest, is a whole lot of people. I’m basically fucked because I get one shoted by the bosses that I’m currently on in the main quest. The only way that I can see to get out of this hole is by buying huge amounts of PC to get way overpowered. Or of course I could grind for weeks on places that I’ve already done. I believe that this could be fixed by giving players a better option for getting attack and defense and health to actually challenge these bosses without spending money.

Topic: Red Crucible / Favorite class based play strategies.

My favorite is the hunter. You can play it with the assault or sniper (though assault is almost always better). It’s basically a map control strategy that takes advantage of your speed to stop your opponents team from setting up ambushes and clearing out snipers. The optimal way to play this strategy is to first locate all of the viable choke points or sniper positions with exponentially wide views on whatever map your playing. Then you have to set up a path that allows you to move from one position to another as quickly as possible(for some maps you’ll only be able to do this on one side of the map, always do it on yours to stop your enemy’s from camping on your territory). Once you’ve done that during the game all you have to do is strafe jump in between points and, hopefully, stop your opponents from setting up effective traps and sniper positions. Another thing the hunter can be used for is flanking large team fights. For example on the Red Dawn roof tops there are often large team encounters as a hunter you want to get behind you enemy and basically suicide jump into the middle of them. If your lucky you’ll get one or two kills but the real value comes from forcing your opponents out of cover and distracting them. Remember as a hunter always keep moving or you might as well be playing heavy assault.

Topic: Realm of the Mad God / The Whitespace Alliance (First RotMG Alliance)

Hello fellow guild members. I was wondering if one of you would be interested in helping me out, you see I traded all of my stuff for pots so that I could get 3% archer equips and then got multi god shotgunned right after I got to level twenty. If someone would be willing to loan me full 1% archer gear I would be willing to repay with 3 def pots by the end of the week. PM me if you’re interested.
Also I replied to the confirmation message a few days ago and from the looks of things still haven’t been added. Is there some requirement that I failed to meet?

You raise a valid point but, to be perfectly honest I don’t have time to write pages (at least not right now) and even if I did I doubt that many people would actually read more then one max length post. But thanks for the link that’s quite an interesting site and I dare say that that is what a real rp looks like.

Topic: Realm of the Mad God / Your Character's Story *rp*

Scalinx was a captain in the army of king Serr of Rarasion. He was a promising student of war and wehn the land faced a new and mysterious danger it was he who was chosen to face it. The danger was creatures unlike any those lands had known before burning pillaging and destroying everything in their path. He was sent out with five hundred men to find the source of the hordes of mysterious creatures that were roaming the western border of the country. He and his men hunted through the western wilds for three years until only Scalinx was left alive after a vicious ambush. Half dead he made his way back to his home land only to find that it had been leveled by the monsters which had murdered his five hundred men. As he traveled through Rarasion he saw no humans left alive and no construct of humans left untouched. Finally at the center of the kingdom and standing at the center of the ruins of Rarasions capital Dertiadgrel he swore that he would destroy whoever, or whatever was responsible for this destruction. Again he traveled west and as he went he saw great cites lodged among the branches of mighty trees that had been razed to their roots and left devoid of life and many other strange and wondrous things now dead and burned. Alone for countless days on the ends of countless days in this wilderness he raged against the powers which controlled his fate, the loved ones he had lost, and the horrible certainty that this was a task as impossible as drinking the sea. Many moons after he departed from the land of his birth he began to lose hope of ever finding his country’s murderer. In his desperation he descended into madness for a time becoming like an animal of the wild living from the land around him and losing all sense of time and duty. When he awoke from this state he was on a strange shore with the taste of sea salt in his mouth, sand in his hair and a staff in his hand. He staggered to his feet and observed the barren beach that he had been lying on. Suddenly he heard a hiss and a snake jumped from the sand and struck at him lowering his crude staff he incinerated to creature with a burst of magic. As he searched inland he knew that this was a place unlike any other that he had yet seen and as he traveled he met others. Like himself they were sworn to destroy the lord of this foul land. They told him that this rulers name was Oryx the Mad God and that it would be no easy task. Scalinx, now with his purpose so close and guarded by the very creatures that had destroyed everything he held dear gripped his staff and faced the unknown.
