Topic: Serious Discussion / Should I give the money back?

Hey, you carelessly have a wallet in your pocket. It’s your fault I could easily pick your pocket.

Try it.

If 10 dollar is not a bit of a deal, I suggest you pay me 10 dollars a week, and we’re both happy. You’re losing nothing, and I’m gaining something.

The situation in the OP was a one time thing. Not weekly. $10 is nothing. $10 every week still is basically nothing ($520, which is two paychecks from a part time job) however it depends on who’s getting hurt. My guess is that the cashier is a teen still in high school. $10 really wouldn’t kill him. Besides, it’ll be a good lesson for him.

Wait, what rights? Did I skip over half of the lawbook in your country or did you just make up the law that “once a possession is out of reach and out of mind from the possessor in question, any person willing to take up the possession becomes the possessor”?

I never said anything about any law. It’s just what I personally believe. There are situations where I would give money back if I had found it. I once found a $20 at the ground at my church and told God I’d pay him back later. Mr. Subway Dude I’d pay back if he was nice to me. If he was being a jerk, that’d be $10 in emotional damages that I’d probably get from complaining to the company anyways.

Use a debit card. Problem solved. No issues involving morality there… or at least conventional issues. “PLASTIC ARE EVIL!” :D

Topic: Serious Discussion / One sentence answer - why do you believe in religion - or not.

I am Catholic because it was not only the religion I was brought up with, but also because I don’t think it really matters what you believe to get into heaven; I believe morals and actions alone determine entrance to God’s exclusive penthouse.

With that being said, I’m sure that’s not what Catholicism teaches, but I’m too lazy to switch religions.

Statistically unlikely things happen, so God must exist? Again, not good evidence.

The Holy Spirit appears before you in front of a live audience of (oh let’s just pick a number) five hundred non-believers and proclaims that God exists? Now that would be some evidence. Pity there’s no good evidence that it ever actually happened.

Ok idiot. Here I’m trying to be relatively neutral and you’re twisting stuff. I never said God MUST exist. Ever. I said I believe he exists. It’s just what I believe.

And thanks Jabor.

Care to elaborate on those things? I can’t explain personal experiences to you (nor can anyone, really, but psychiatrists can try, and even find pretty good explanations), but if you have difficulty accepting things about the physical universe, I would be happy to try and explain them.

Well since you asked, this is all that I need explained. Of course you can’t. If you could, religion would be non-existant.

And as for my life experiences, they aren’t like I had an acid trip and “saw Jesus” or anything like that. They’re simply things that I think are far too unlikely to happen in a universe without a god. Theoretically they were possible situations, but the chances were negligible.

Would you really? I think that if it was really your money you would feel quite a bit differently.

Yes I really would. I’d sure as hell be pissed with myself but as far as I’m concerned, I lost all rights to it by being careless.

The Bible ddddddddduuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! People wroteabout Jesus and those people acctually saw him and how can a man raise someone from the dead without the help of th Father.

And the Bible could be nothing more than feel-good stories. Just like Jabor said, the Bible is about as much proof of God as Harry Potter is of wizards. Although I believe in God, I do not think we have any proof to say he does or does not exist. I also believe that it is just as acceptable to be athiest as it is to be thiest. They are both based on speculation, and there simply are no facts.

The Bible could be 100% true. However, it is a written media. You can write down anything you want. Now if someone caught God on video, it’d be more believable, however videos can still be edited. So I do not believe that proof of God has any physical manifestation, and it simply comes down to what you believe. Personally I have had too many things in my life happen that I personally think could not have happened in a godless universe. It is proof to me, but not for anyone else.

I never said it was “proof.” Also, you’re criticizing the validity of the Old Testament. That’s old news. Plus, Christians don’t even follow the Old Testament, so your argument has no application to mine. So no I did not “lose,” you did.

Who ever said they went to an expert? Who said they could afford one? Getting credit does not require any guidance.

The Community Reinvestment Act played a role in the economic crisis, but so did simple fiscal irresponsibilty, labor unions forcing American auto industries to pay employees higher wages… etc. You cannot put the blame on one man and be correct with that accusation.

Topic: Serious Discussion / IF god was real why dosnt he fix the world we live in now

Well, from a scientist’s point of view, maybe we’re an experiment? God is making his observations. Personally, I believe he shouldn’t mess with this experiment he’s created until there’s nothing more to observe, in other words, waiting until we’ve all blown ourselves to bits with thermonuclear devices, or succumbed to some horrible plauge, etc.

It’s also possible that he saves us by letting us die. Seriously, if he made us live forever that would probably be the cruelest thing he could do to us, aside from casting us in a place where you live forever and are in eternal pain, also known as “hell.”

Personally, I believe there is a God partly because I was raised Catholic, but also because I just simply cannot understand one phenomenon that exists here on Earth: Life.

How can these molecules that make us up come together to create a living organism? How did bacteria come to be from the simple matter that is on our planet? Or viruses, since they’re less complex? How does thought exist?

I think the one thing that would get me to stop being a Christian would be if life was found somewhere wlse in the universe. It would explain that it is a naturally occuring phenomenon that can happen as long as the conditions are appropriate, and that a god is uninvolved.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Atheist view of Animal Rights

Animals have souls … they have feelings … they are better by nature than humans; they do not possess greed or jealousy or hatred or bigotry. They have rights that many humans, unfortunately, do not respect or understand.

I highly disagree. Animals can be jealous. Take my two cats for example. One was abused and is extremely shy, essentially a scaredy cat. The other cat won’t leave us alone. She demands constant attention. When I give my “Scaredy cat” attention, “Sociable Kitty” gets extremely jealous and will attack “Scaredy Cat.”

However, I do think animals are better by nature.

Animals are living organisms, capable of independent thought. They can experience pain, displeasure, hunger… but they can also experience joy and excitement. I once felt horrible for saying the word “mail” around my friend’s dog because his dog loves going to get the mail and was expecting to be able to go outside after I had said it. Unfortunately his dog was disappointed, and I now will say “correo” instead of mail around my friend’s dog.

Oh and that brings up another point… animals can be very intelligent. Dogs for instance have the capability to understand almost every word we speak on an everyday basis. Like my “mail” example above. Also, there have been dogs that have saved the lives of humans. They do so much for us, why should we not do the same for them?

if your best friend asks you to go hunting and says he won’t shoot you, should you not believe him because you don’t have proof?

Maybe you shouldn’t make friends with someone dumb enough to shoot you.

Topic: Serious Discussion / What to do with $700 Billion Dollars

The bailout is not going to work. And honestly, it’s the banks who got themselves into this mess.

First people wanted to buy homes they couldn’t afford.
Second the banks loaned money to those people who couldn’t afford them.
Third, the homeowners we forced to foreclose. Forth, the banks didn’t get their money, and lied about their earnings to keep investors happy.
Fourth, the banks fail because the money they loan isn’t being paid back. Sixth, investors freak out because the company they own stock in just filed bankruptcy.
Finally, someone comes up with the idea that giving $700 billion to greedy corporations that clearly cannot wisely spend their money…

giant AIG, the company held a week-long retreat for its executives at the luxury St. Regis Resort in Monarch Beach, Calif., running up a tab of $440,000

… is just going to make things all better.

And of course there are other factors involved besides greed. Thanks Daikun for pointing out the role of The Community Reinvestment Act to me.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Do you Think that GTA should be Banned?

Do I have a problem with GTA? No.

Do I have a problem with kids under 13 playing GTA? Yes. Parents shouldn’t be buying video games for kids just because they want them. Hell, parents shouldn’t buy their kids anything just because they want them. But of course they do, so little kids anywhere from age… probably 3? (maybe younger?) to age 10 now know what drugs are, what prostitutes are, and that running from the cops and shooting people is ok. If you’re gonna buy your kid a violent video game, your job as a parent is to make sure that they understand that it’s only a game, and that they shouldn’t duplicate actions such as jacking vehicles and knifing random pedestians. Believe me, if you don’t tell your kid that knifing people is bad, well then it’s quite possible they’ll do it.

I don’t think GTA is for everyone. Some people are sick in the head. Some people are too easily influenced by what they see in movies, video games, etc. However, the general population does not, and therefore I definately don’t think it should be banned. Banned for little kids? Yes. That’s what the f*cking “rated M for mature” logo is for. Not “rated M for must buy for child.” Parents don’t seem to understand that boobies are bad for their 5 year old.

Well J.F.K also had some scandals he just got really famous because of his assassination… He slept with alot of underage girls. Did something else can’t remember…

So what? It doesn’t matter who slept with who. All that matters is how they ran the country.
