I nod and slide a plate her way. “The bacon is almost done, if you’re interested. Condiments are in the fridge if you use them regularly.” I turn my attention back to the bacon, being careful to avoid the pops of grease. I quirk my eyebrow, a buzz echoing throughout the kitchen. A sly smirk slides across my face as the obvious dawns on me. “Texting that clumsy boy with the delinquent brother from yesterday?” I ask innocently enough, removing the skillet from the stove and placing two pieces of bacon on her plate.

I hum softly to myself, scrambling eggs and flipping pancakes. I had been up since the early hours of morning, a very light coat of sweat on my skin. Right when I get out of bed, I wash my face, dress in tighter clothes, and beat the bark off of near by trees. After a few hours of that, I eat something and then wash off for the remainder of my day. That series of events happened everyday on the clock, never to change. Well, now it had to change very slightly because I was feeding 2 now, not just myself. I rest the finished eggs on two plates, do the same with pancakes and start a new skillet of bacon. I cock my head towards the sound of foot steps, offering a soft smile to the rather sleepy looking girl. I nod towards her and go back to cooking. “And a good morning to you too. You know…I don’t believe you’ve told me your name yet….Seems sort of odd now that you’re temporarily living with me.”

I follow the young boy around town, keeping quiet and sticking close. It surprises me, how my day has gone. I had originally woken up with the plan to buy a new book, read, then train and here I am now, following two teenagers around, one of which has agreed to live with me, with the intent of busting someone out of jail. How plans change! And not that I was complaining about that one bit. So far, this was as equally enjoyable as a day in the park would have been and definitely more exciting. Sooner than I expected, we stroll into a rather large prison, bypassing many officers. This strikes me as odd considering that in a prison of this size, you’d think they’d stop 3 teenagers. I decide it’d be in my best interest not to ask questions and we eventually reach a cell. I purse my lips at the scene. A dazzling man dressed in a purple vest and exquisite trousers scolding a boy who looked like an older version of the one who escorted me here. A small smile graces my lips at the two boys interaction.

I nod, affirming her statement that she’s going to live with me. Good. It would bother me to no end if she declined my offer. Now that that matter was settled, my attention was turned to the boy. It seems as if anyone that looks even a bit younger than myself is automatically seen as helpless and sad. That nervous, withdrawn look on his face when his brother is mentioned. He obviously must care for him a lot, it is his brother after all, even to the point where he’s going to bail him out. I’m not sure if that means paying the fee or a prison break, but either way I find myself wanting to go along. I check my pocket watch and switch my plans for the day. “I can’t let you two children visit a prison by your lonesome. I’ll come with you and supervise.”

I cock my head to the side at the girl, confused. “But why wouldn’t they…?” I stop myself, shake my head and dismiss the thought. That can be discussed later. I have a lost girl turned homeless and my damn maternal instincts are flaring up. I run a hand through my hair and sigh. “I know you don’t know me, I actually don’t think I’ve told you my name, but look. Why don’t you come live with me for awhile until we can find you a permanent place? The house is small, but I have a fair sized room and a comfortable couch out in the living room. If not that, then I can lend you money for an apartment. I can’t be irresponsible and just let you suffer on the street.” I huff at the end of my small rant and cross my arms over my chest. It was her choice. I turn my attention to the boy that ran into Evie, noticing his blush but saving him from even more embarrassment and not mention it. What he says surprises me. “Your brother just got arrested…?”

My brow quirks as a strange boy too occupied with his cellphone slams straight into Evie. I wince slightly as Evie falls onto the concrete, the boy blinking a few times before offering to help her up. He wasn’t a complete jerk. A semi-jerk, for knocking her over, but at least he acknowledged that he did wrong and offered her help. I cross my arms and watch their interaction, not bothering to say anything. I didn’t have to, though it was tempting, especially when Evie’s mood swung and she contemplated leaving. I shrugged this off. I wouldn’t let her leave even if her mood wanted her to. She had no idea where she was going anyway and chances are we’d wind up meeting again after she wandered around. A sudden cold chill ripped through me, breaking my chain of thought. His eyes. They weren’t that dull of a green, were they…? They must have been. I look over Evie once before settling my eyes on her sad expression. “Yes, are you alright?” I said in a way that meant much more than just physically.

I let a small smile grace my lips and shake my head. “No, not a complete idiot. Just seems like you have your head in the clouds, which is never a bad thing, but I’d rather you be safe too.” I shut my mouth after that. What am I? Her mom? Her next comments strike me as odd and I have to bite my tongue to keep from responding. It’s really none of my business on what her family is like. I shouldn’t care that she’s unwanted; I met her only 10 minutes or so ago. I shouldn’t, but a nagging feeling in my chest tells me I should. I look back at her, keeping my pace. “…Why wouldn’t they want you?” I ask a bit hesitantly. I feel a bit rude for asking so blatantly, but then again, she was the one who brought it up. And that smile. That small, sad smile she gave me doesn’t settle quite right with me. I’m hoping nothing is terribly wrong with this girls family life. If it is, my maternal instincts are definitely going to kick in and I feel if that happened, I wouldn’t get any reading done.

I look back and quirk a brow at her. “I understand that you’ve lived here for a day…but you can’t remember where your house is?” This girl must have the attention span of a goldfish. She couldn’t remember her house number? The street she lived on? Any significant sights near her home? I took in a small breath. I was jumping ahead of myself. It wasn’t the girl’s fault really, though it would been best if she started to pay attention more. If she did, this situation, that is asking a total stranger for help because she’s lost, could have been avoided. I shook my head. “No matter. I’m sure we’ll find it if we can’t find your brothers first. You should start paying attention to your surroundings. You wouldn’t get lost so much.”

I watch the girl’s features flick from confused, to frustrated, to defeated. Her answer doesn’t surprise me and, of course, I agree to help her. I was the one who suggested it anyway. I cradle my precious book in my arms and catch up to where she’s standing. “Let’s be off then!” I say and start forward. The arcade isn’t that far and I can see the large, blue, attention getting sign from here. “We’ll start at Gaming Town, search the place and if they’re not there, I’ll take you to Crazer Gamer and if they’re not there, why, it seems I’ll have to escort you home.” I shoot a her a look over my shoulder, “Sound good?”

I watch the girl ramble on about her unobservant parents and her-holy hell-8 other siblings. It seems I’m finding out more about this girl than I intended to and while I’m not opposed to it, it just seems like useless knowledge to me. When she begins to walk away, I follow a few steps. “To your left!” I call, “To your left about 2 blocks is an Arcade and if you continue left and turn right once you reach 5 blocks, there’s another arcade on the corner.” This seems to grab her attention, if only slightly. “Are you sure you want to go it alone? I’m willing to walk with you there if you want.” I’ve lived here in Chicago for my entire life, traveling these streets and memorizing exactly where I need to go. While I don’t visit the arcade often, and when I say often I mean not at all, but one is on the way to the woods which is where I’m heading anyway. It would be best for me to ensure the girl returns to her brothers safely, that way I’d be heading to my reading spot and my mind would be at ease on her whereabouts. It’s a win win situation.

I shake my head slightly. “You’re not a bother at all. I would just like to read a little before the sun goes down. I figure we’ll find your brothers relatively soon, considering that you most likely live somewhere close. Where were you and your brothers last?” I ask. Have to know where she’s been to figure out where she’s going now. I keep my eyes locked on hers, curiosity flickering behind my irises. I don’t take the time to asses the girl any further. I have what I need to know and don’t plan to find out anything else. I patiently await her response.

I blink a few times, taking the child in. Well, child is an understatement. Although she looks young, she isn’t that young. Based on my overview of her and her speech, I’d guess 15 at the absolute youngest, 18 at the absolute oldest. Oh well. A lost girl is a lost girl. I shrug nonchalantly at her indecisiveness, deciding that if she couldn’t tell if she was lost or not, she was lost anyway. I adjust the bag in my arms, cocking my head to the street behind me out of habit. “Well, you seem pretty lost. If you would like I could either guide you home, help you find your brothers, or leave you alone. Your choice, but pick soon. We’re burning precious daylight.” My free hand digs into my pocket for a moment before I pull out a pocket watch. I flip it open, read the time and place it back. “You have 5 minutes to decide.”

As soon as I reach the bookstore, I dart for the Horror section. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, HP Lovecraft. All of them are instant favorites and I’ve read many of their books more than once. My fingers grace the glossy spines as I look for a book I’ve read only once and have been craving to indulge in again. “Aha!” I carefully remove the thick book from the shelf, examining the cover. “IT by Stephen King.” I read aloud to myself in a hushed whisper. I tuck the book under my arm, pay for it at the register and head out the door, the tiny chime of a bell signaling my leave. As soon as I turn to walk to my usual reading spot, a small area of woods, I spot a young girl. The frustrated, yet worried expression on her face tells me she’s lost. I stare at her for a moment longer, an image of a whimpering, wide eyed puppy coming to mind and I approach her. “Are you lost?”

Name: Gwyneth Marged

Wears form fitting clothing that’s easy to move in, black in color. Tennis shoes. Very light olive complexion and always has a pair of scraggly, wool fingerless gloves on.

Bio: Gwyn was born the oldest of a lower class family, having 2 siblings younger than her. Living in a small house and having hard working parents set Gwyn’s role as mother to her siblings and gave her a too early start on adulthood. Due to her upbringing, she is often the bearer of responsibility and the voice of reason. She spends her time in the woods, either reading or practicing her skills on trees. In terms of fighting, she certainly isn’t a pacifist, but only fights when provoked. Not many things bother her, but when she’s pushed over the edge, she tends to get incredibly violent. Has a mean left hook and is quick agile. She has no clear goals in life except for caring for her family and improving her skills.

Alexandra swallowed her bit of pizza, sitting back in her circle of stuffed animals. She made sure she only took one piece, considering Deanna was coming over and she would definitely want some. She set the half eaten piece of delivery pizza down, tapping her fingers on the keyboard lightly. She was bored. She didn’t feel like dissecting and reassembling stuffed animals and giving them hilarious names. What else would be as entertaining as that? She shrugged and minimized the SBURB screen, scrolling over her entertaining desktop of RIVERS CUOMO and JEFF MAGNUM carrying an old guy to Heaven. She giggled lightly to herself at the image, clicking on the Pesterchum icon. Her eyes scanned down her friends list. She nodded to herself. Time to pester her good friend Clayton.

[09:38] GC: Hello, Clayton. How is life treating you this fine day?
[09:38] CC: Pa(\\)icki(\\)g
[09:38] GC: And why is that?
[09:38] CC: The game. I thi(\\)k I lost it.
[09:39] GC: …How could you lose it?
[09:39] CC: If I k(\\)ew that, would I be pa(\\)icki(\\)g?
[09:41] GC: I suppose not. Lemmeywinks suggests to take baby steps. Where did you leave it last?
[09:41] CC: I thi(\\)k Co(\\)(\\)or did somethig with my copy, but he has (\\)o se(\\)se of orga(\\)izatio(\\).
[09:42] GC: We concur.
[09:42] GC: Could you take and use his copy? If he’s finished with it, of course.
[09:43] CC: So a(\\)yway, back to pa(\\)icki(\\)g a(\\)d flippi(\\)g tables a(\\)d suchforth a(\\)d sowhich.
[09:43] GC: Don’t Panic.
[09:43] GC: Ever.
[09:43] CC: Too late. Tables all over the grou(\\)d.
[09:44] GC: Perhaps the game is under one of them, then.
[09:44] CC: the game was(\\)‘t o(\\) top of a(\\)y of them, so it’s (\\)ot u(\\)der them. Logic.
[09:45] GC: Sarcasm, dear Clayton. Sarcasm.
[09:48] CC: Well I k(\\)ow it is(\\)‘t u(\\)der the weird zombie-eye poster.
[09:49] GC: That’s a start. Any other places it absolutely wouldn’t be?
[09:49] CC: That’s the o(\\)ly place I ca(\\) rule out. (\\)othi(\\)g gets (\\)ear it.
[09:51] GC: Hmm…Lemmeywinks says to check your Living Room and start there.
[09:51] CC: Why would it be i(\\) my livi(\\)g room? There’s (\\)o computer there. (\\)ot o(\\)e that I use a(\\)yway.
[09:52] GC: Perhaps if Connor did tamper with it, it would be there. Lemmeywinks and I are just making suggestions and trying to calm you down.
[09:53] CC: Few thi(\\)gs will calm me dow(\\)!
[09:53] GC: Like?
[09:53] CC: Fi(\\)di(\\)g the flippi(\\) disc!
[09:54] GC: Calm! Calm…
[09:55] GC: You will find it. If you recieved it and know that it is somewhere in your household, you will find it.
[09:55] CC: Okay, I’ve ru(\\) out of tables to flip for (\\)ow, so I’m calm.
[09:58] GC: I would go talk to Connor to see if he knows anything…Er…You did check your disc drive for it, correct?
[10:00] CC: I have o(\\)e of the discs, but it’s the server disc.
[10:03] GC: Lemmeywinks wonders why you couldn’t be my server player. However, I suppose that would be because I’m planning on being your server player. He now says to check between the cushions of your couch.
[10:07] CC: Yeah. I wa(\\)t to start first, co(\\)sideri(\\)g we have (\\)o idea what this game is about, a(\\)d I have a bit more experie(\\)ce with this ki(\\)d of thi(\\)g. A(\\)yway, there’s (\\)o couch i(\\) the immediate vici(\\)ity.
[10:10] GC: Agreed. You’ve always been more the leader type anyway. Would the game even be in the immediate vicinity?
[10:12] CC: I ca(\\)‘t imagi(\\)e it would be a(\\)ywhere else. Co(\\)(\\)or usually just tosses crap arou(\\)d a(\\)ywhere i(\\) here.
[10:15] GC: That sounds very…unsanitary. But! It’s a very good thing that it’s close by. Check under furniture, under any types of fabric, under miscellaneous objects…
[10:16] CC: Do you have your discs? Are you at all prepared for this?
[10:17] GC: I have it installed and what not. I’m as ready as I’ll ever be, I suppose. I’m not even sure what this game entails.
[10:19] CC: Well Iheard a loud crash i(\\) the baseme(\\)t earlier, a(\\)d I’m pretty sure it was(\\)‘t Co(\\)(\\)or.
[10:19] CC: Poi(\\)t is, this seems like a(\\) odd game.
[10:21] GC: Did you investigate the crash? And, I have to agree. The box it came it didn’t a have a description or title…I never heard of it until Connor mentioned it.
[10:29] CC: I’m (\\)ot too co(\\)cer(\\)ed about it, though it did sou(\\)d like he was freaki(\\)g out a bit.
[10:30] GC: …Why was he freaking about it? Connor usually doesn’t really freak out over a simple game.
[10:31] CC: Agai(\\) I doubt this is a(\\)y game. A(\\)yway, I (\\)eed to go look for this thi(\\)g so we ca(\\) start.
[10:32] GC: Agreed. Look in places you would usually look last. That tends to help me when I lose stuffed animals or scalpels.
[10:33] CC: That’s a bit weird, but tha(\\)ks for the advice. I’ll let you k(\\)ow whe(\\) I have the game i(\\)stalled.
conflagrantCreator [CC] ceased pestering gallivantingCephalopod [GC] at 22:34

Alexandra closed the chat window and picked up her pizza again, glancing over at the box. She frowned and huffed. A piece besides her own was missing. Reaching up to the top of her head, she bopped Lemmeywinks’s plush nose. “I told you not to eat any until Deanna got here.”

A young woman presses snugly into a corner or her room, eyes glued to the download bar of her new SBURB game. She is surrounded by various stuffed animals, a small yellow lamb resting silently on her head. What is her name? ==> SCHIZOPHRENIC PSYCHOBIT- She smothers the name with a stuffed stegosaurus, the scowl on her face indicating she is far from pleased. Try again. ==> ALEXANDRA PURDY She moves the stegosaurus, eyes narrowed in suspicion before turning her attention back to the screen. That name will do.

Her surroundings are quite simplistic, if not the least bit unnerving. Her walls are chalk white, mostly bare except for her beloved ANGSTY SEPHIROTH ADVENT CHILDREN POSTER. TWO BOOKCASES line the wall adjacent to her corner, filled with books that concern DISEASE and MEDICINE. They are slightly worse for wear considering her CONSTANT DESIRE to read and learn about FATAL AND NONFATAL ILLNESSES. A MEDICAL KIT lays on her bed, opened and revealing all the MEDICAL EQUIPMENT she owns. All the SCALPELS are aligned in the KIT according to size, GAUZE and CARTOON BAND-AIDS below them. A STETHOSCOPE and MOCK SAW are besides the KIT, the SAW having strings of cotton attached to its blade. What’s most disturbing are the POST-SURGERY STUFFED ANIMALS flooding the floor. One particular ‘animal’ that sticks out has the paws and face of a HOUSEHOLD CAT, the stuffed feathery wings of a MYTHICAL PEGASUS, and the body of a RHINOCEROS. She affectionately calls him Andy Gryphon.

A knock at the door distracts her. A strong smell of delivery pizza fills her room. She glances back and forth between the 83% loading bar and the closed door. Making a decision, she gathers Lemmeywinks in her arms, sets her laptop in her ring of PRE-SURGERY STUFFED ANIMALS, and heads for the door.
