If I may reply to the person complaining about the game being “unfair” on higher difficulties, and therefore not fun…

When I figured out how to play on Harder, I realized you have to make some huge sacrifice and try stick it out even in the face of overwhelming loss. I found that very fun because of the challenge it posed. Your people will terribly depressed, or dying of starvation, or hopelessly outgunned… you have to choose to give up a lot in order to work on a few areas of strength and hope that they will coast you through to victory. I don’t enjoy playing anything less than Harder now that I’ve got it down.

This is a great thread! I read it over, considered its advice, and just went and took the harder badge on my first try. Lots of police stations / malls, churches/bars, and absolutely NO FOOD. Scouting the night before the horde arrives, then recruiting whoever I find.

Also, not turtling and only bothering to take buildings that serve my purposes immediately (without renovation).

Maybe I’ll try nightmare next. Again, great thread!

Oh, and give him Boots of Celerity so he always goes first.

Meraeador: Flamethrower, Sleep-O-Matic, and some spirit boosting.

Give him elemental potions.

Flamethrower will win most of your battles. For the ones it doesn’t, Sleep-O-Matic will buy you the necessary time to deal with the enemies through experimentation.

Found it the easiest arena but then again, I use Meraeador in my core party.

What bugs me is… why is fire effective against air, not earth?

Earth is like, plants, trees, etc? Fire should tear that shit up.

I would have said the heirarchy of strength to weakness should be…

Fire > Earth > Electricity > Water > Fire

Fire burns trees
Earth grounds electricity
Electricity zaps fish
Water quells fire

Just a trifle that sort of bugs me.

You got it, my friend! That combination worked. The Pixie was tricky… did Astral Form as soon as I could, then used a Speedy Pot… ultimately it was just me attacking either the Pixie or myself, but Pixie Flame keeping me from dying… the other battles were easy. The Black Hat seems like the piece I had been missing, that made it MUCH easier. Thanks!

Any tips on this one? I’m finding it impossible. Never used Solaar at all and xyr solo arena is very frustrating. Please help me before I lose my mind.

Use your brain…

I think he means, since that move bothers to point out that the damage IS affected by level, it implies that damage normally is NOT affected by level.

Interesting. The glitch works.

But honestly, you don’t need the glitch, really. It’s easy to get your hands on TONS of the status buff potions. I’ve beaten every boss & superboss using Meraeador and still have more potions than I know what to do with (though admittedly I used most of them on Animus).

Ok, I want to make a bunch of Rainbow Juices for Meraeador’s Potion Spray.

Where do I get light essences, though? It’s the only kind I don’t have in abundance.

Go kill a pixie in the Lifewood’s dream realm. You can find one hidden in the southernmost chest.

You may have a tough time with it, it’s a bit tricky to kill. Try to see if you can one-hit it. Zach’s Coup de Grace does the trick, but most people don’t seem to use Zach.

Yes! Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so. Also, Flamethrower and Sleep-O-Matic makes his solo arena a joke.

big Meraeador fan here.

Yes, build his Flamethrower right away. Head to the volcano as soon as it’s open, and as far as the temple, to collect fire essences. Get the lead pipes from the rats in that creepy satanic house where that guy puts you in his dungeon (forget what it’s called). you should have no problem getting the other ingredients.

once you’ve got that, next thing you’ll want to work on is getting Sleep-O-Matic. This thing works on MOST enemies and bosses, only occasionally not working.

Give him Griffin Boots and something to boost his SPR.

Now Maraeador will end all of your random battles on turn 1. Unless you’re fighting things that absorb fire, of course. In which case, you can always put them to sleep and let your team deal with them.

Still not convinced? Two words: Potion spray.

Topic: MARDEK RPG: Chapter 3 / The Karnos/Animus Strategy Archives

I’m kinda disappointed by Karnos. I just beat him on my second try. Using my normal party of Mardek, Zach, Meraeador and Gloria.

Went like this…

Potion sprayed a speedy drink, then a mirrilixir, then a shaman’s brew. Party is ready to rock.

Use magic on Karnos until he goes into Air elemental mode. I had evasion reactions so his normal attacks weren’t hurting me too much. He used a “shield breaker” but it didn’t hit, and started using some air-elemental one-target attacks which are super easy to null.

Then, my party just started dropping Alchemist Fires on him. Except Meraeador, who was using Flamethrower.

Every time a null effect was dropped, I’d put it back up with Mardek or Gloria.

Super easy. He didn’t live long, and didn’t change his element the whole battle. The only multi-target spell he used after he was Air was that dark-elemental spell, which just got nulled when he used it.

Hopefully Animus is harder, and I expect he will be.

What determines the damage dealt by Meraeador’s Flamethrower? SPR? I’m Stole-shopping and I want to boost Flamethrower’s damage.

Another neat trick with Zach is to load the enemies up with elemental nulls (to null THEIR defensive spells, obviously, leaving one or two elements open for you to exploit). Then, use Coup de Grace… it will consistently hit for some VERY nice damage, even if the enemy has “shield” status.

I really am learning to enjoy Zach, after playing around with his abilities a bit. They all end up being much more useful in practice than they are in theory.

I didn’t even try using Sslen’ck over Zach. I just remembered how Zach was central to my strategy in Chapter 2 and was eager to get him back in. I think you’ll agree there’s no point in having both of them.

Chapter 2, for me, was basically… party heals/debilitates, Zach does Crescendo Slash…

No love for Meraeador?

Sleep-O-Matic is seriously underrated. You can lock out a lot of the storyline bosses with it. It also makes random battles ludicrously easy, especially if you give him Boots of Celerity so he always goes first.

Flamethrower also owns in the random battles, and if you put thought into it, he’s always got a useful turn to take during a boss battle. He always feels like the most vital part of my party.

I’m also playing Mardek, Gloria and Zach. Thinking of taking Zach out because I find more often than not he just ends up throwing bottles instead of using his abilities. Not nearly as useful as he was in Chapter 2. Crescendo is fun but by the time it starts to “Crescendo” the battle is almost over anyways.

Just got Legion and am thinking of putting him in instead of Zach. Haven’t used Elwyen. Sslen’ck is too monotonous for my taste. And Donovan and Sharla are so bland that I was expecting them to die like at the start of the game, not become permanent members.
