You really underestimate refined T5. Refining single-handedly gives +4 speed to a knight which cures the knight’s one and only weakness ; How awesome is that?!

Actually, speed is linear. a 10% increase in speed means a 10% increase in DPS, and a 10% increase in healing as well since in end game everyone depends on life steal for healing. So for example the refined T5 knight goes from 10 speed to 14 speed, meaning +40% to both DPS and survivability. So speed is indeed God in this game. Who’s not doing the math here?

I heavily disagree. Some T6 offer absolutely no improvement with respect to T5. They’re not worse, but they’re not better either. For T6 archer (with lens of looking) vs T5 archer, it adds 20 attack and 10 defense, but it removes 1 speed : the improvement is negligible. For refined T6 adventurer vs refined T5 adventurer, it adds 15 attack, 20 defense and 30 health, but it removes 4 speed : is it really worth it?

Now all the T6 sets are on the wiki. And the message is clear : refined sets are not better than non-refined ones in any way. The best bonus I saw in a full refined set is +1 speed compared to the non-refined set, I’m not kidding. Of course I’m disregarding minor bonuses such as +7 attack or such because they are negligible. So refining them gives nothing, it’s not at all like T5 knight where refining was awesome :(

So the the question becomes : which T6 set doesn’t completely suck, and why?

I would say knight is below expectations but not completely nuts (plus 50 def compared to T5 should be pretty good against thrunks and the like, even though you’re back to a speed of 7) ; berserker is OK (plus 60 def compared to T5 with no penalties), and wizard is barely OK (+18 attack compared to T5, but -3 speed compared to refined T5).

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] Food update

The croissant glitch is just a dirty trick that was used by desperate players ; it’s not like it’s practical or anything… and it still costed 840 wood (4 food per croissant for 42 food) altogether to make the equivalent of 3 red berry pies or whatever.
Now it’s like croissants (920 wood, now that max food is at 48) against red berry pie (640 wood and 460 metal) or grinn berry pie (1040 wood and 860 metal). Come on guys, it’s more expensive for sure, but it’s not an outrageous difference. It used to be outrageous with red berry pie at 1k each and grinn berry pie at 2k each, but I think now you can at least consider buying these 2 items.
And don’t forget that high level mines are much more efficient than high level logging camps, so that upgrading your mines to lvl 8 or lvl 9 actually makes sense in opposition to logging camps. And make a powered mine, that’s the best use you can find for your daily pramin.
Also you can still switch your heroes’ class and feed them croissants (the only reasonable use of croissants to my mind).

@Seizan : Just look at the T6 archer and the T6 adventurer. They are actually worse than their T5 equivalents! The T6 archer loses 3 speed in comparison to the T5 one (who already has only 15 speed), for just a very minor gain in attack! Just don’t give a bow to a giant fox ;)

And seriously, stop insulting people just because you disagree with them, that’s not cool.

If you belive that dandy is better than shadower then you may have some valid argument. Otherwise at T5 berzerker is much better for evrything except farming than shadowers and rogues.

Let’s put the stats so we can compare.

T5 berserker (Sardaukar Turban – Refined Freedomallet – Refined Tabardasher – Cogeye – Refined Scrapper Scarf). It’s a better build than the standard set, from a post in another thread (I don’t use berserkers at all).
Attack 255
Defense 194
Speed 14
Health 308.

my T5 adventurer (standard shadower, 2 refined out of 3)
Attack 208
Defense 226
Speed 20
Health 186

my T5 knight (standard mountain guard, all refined (important!) + refined shaman paint)
Attack 235
Defense 295
Speed 14
Health 205

For me knight >> berserker since defense is a lot better than health in this game.
Shadower is better than dandy, and he’s not really comparable to zerker since he has much more speed but lower other stats. Still, he has higher survivability (with life steal) than zerker since he has higher defense and more speed so he heals quicker. The big advantage of zerker over the others is health but I find that having high health in this game is rather worthless compared to other stats.

I think that all T6 items suck for now. The T6 archer hasn’t been mentioned, he looks like a giant fox half the size of the screen (like the others), and he is actually worse than T5! Only +4 speed against +7 speed for honored, and almost no improvement in other stats! It’s probably a first try from the dev, it’s likely that he’ll improve them in the future.

If you want a knight that can attack without being hasted, the T5 knight already does that ; actually the refined T5 knight. All refined T5 items (3 speed) + refined set bonus (2 speed) + refined shaman paint (2 speed) = a speed of 14 in total!

Don’t forget that dandy has rage, life steal, and fancy flurry AT THE SAME TIME. Fancy flurry as special attack, life steal as subjob ability, and rage as set bonus for dandy set (even rage II when refined)! And first attack as bonus. Have you tried to use those dandys? ;)

something the players can enjoy and the devs can get money from

There is already lots of things where “the dev can get money from” in this game, and it’s ever-increasing. And it really isn’t stuff that players enjoy (see the “wooden box” rip-off for example). We already have a game that is completely geared towards premium content, so why make it even more so?

The idea itself isn’t bad at all, it’s an interesting gameplay feature, but why premium content again? We already have a game where paying is the equivalent of entering a cheatcode, so seeing that kind of suggestion from players is a form of masochism as far as I’m concerned :(

So that box thing is just a “pay to play” feature, nothing more. What’s the point of even dropping boxes and selling keys, you could just sell boxes that don’t need keys and it would come down to the same : pay $$$ to get overpowered premium items.
For me that feature as it is now is just a big ripoff. I hope the dev will change it and give us a way of finding keys as drops (from rare monsters, or bosses, or whatever).

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] a little bit of help

Funny that no one mentioned the strategy I used, it’s pretty basic but it gets the job done.

I used 2 dandys, 1 knight, and 1 soldier with thermobolt. knight at the front, dandy at the middle, and soldier at the back. Scald a thumper, then focus him with all your guys till he’s dead. You have no healing but when one of your guys dies you just replace him (when knight gets killed replace him with a dandy) ; you can even use your 2 other characters as meat shields. You don’t need any potion with this. Basically it’s hit hard and fast before you die ; I use no healing or haste because it’s too slow.

You should make more than 1 dandy : dandys are the best T4 class and they’re cheap, so make 2 or 3 of them. Berserker kind of sucks at high level so you can convert your berserker into a dandy (I did that and I don’t regret it).

For me it’s pretty clear : DPS=attack*speed if the enemy has no defense. If the enemy has defense, your attack is reduced by the defense (the formula for that isn’t obvious), so DPS = reduced attack*speed.
And yes, speed is the number of attacks per unit time.

Most of the time speed is much better, but attack must not be too low either because of high defense enemies (thrunks, thumpers, etc). If it’s about T3 vs T4 sets, I’d say rangerling is better than soldier (though not by so much), plague doctor is worse than savant, and for butcher I don’t know because I hate barbarians anyways ;)

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] t5 berserker set

T5 berserker (non refined, with butcher hat) :
ATK +138
DEF +87
HP +150
SPD +4

T5 knight (non refined) :
ATK +136
DEF +170
HP +125
SPD +1

For me, anything that the berserker does, the knight does better. The only weakness of the knight is speed, but it’s easily corrected : refined shaman paint (+2 speed, and I think the berseker can’t use this one) + having refined T5 items does the job. In refined version the spd bonus becomes actually +6 for the berserker and +5 for the knight!

@TZWien : Don’t forget the T5 archer, he’s pretty awesome. He’s got good def, high attack, and high speed. Much better than soldier who really suffers because of his low attack in late game.

Rallying gives old scarves, not the item shop itself. It works with any building, just like rusty screws or small nuts. Just rally a lot and you won’t ever have to farm them. I now have 70 of them without even trying.

EDIT : my bad, it doesn’t work with rallying resource production buildings, only in rallying item creation. Since I only use rallying in item creation I didn’t notice.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] Best classes for tier 4 and 5

Ok, so I’ll get knight first to survive floors 44 and 45 ; and then shadower for DPS. I saw a wave with 2 thrunks and 2 thumpers on floor 44, and I read that floor 45 is even worse, so a tank is an absolute necessity. Currently the wave with thrunks and thumpers destroys me in 10 sec…

Btw, what’s the point of grtting T5 cleric? He has no speed bonus so he’s very slow, sure his heals are big, but is it really worth all that money?

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] Best classes for tier 4 and 5

@rhpb : Don’t forget that the crafting itself costs as much as creating the building, because you need two T4 items for each T5 item, etc. So crafting T5 costs 3*10k + 6*4k + 12*2k + … ~ 80k of each. So it’s more than 6 days in total. And that’s supposing you only put your resources in that. In practice you need to buy food (1k of each for red berry pie!), upgrade your resource producing buildings and your storage, spend lots of food to farm items, etc. Only with crafting and upgrading you already need 36 days to have all T5, so saying 2 months really isn’t an overestimate. That’s why I want to specialize.

@erosennin : yeah, shadowers were my second choice actually. Since I got paranoid from all the hard-hitting enemies (thrunks, thumpers, etc in numbers), I wanted a heavy tank, but a high DPS is good too. Doesn’t the shadower get destroyed by 2 or 3 thrunks because of his (relatively) low def though? I want to survive floors 44 and 45!

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] Best classes for tier 4 and 5

Hi all,
I am at tier 4 level (three T4 buildings) and at floor 43. I am beginning to think that, if I don’t want to take 2 months to finish the game, I should upgrade selectively my hero guilds since they’re so damn expensive. The goal is to create a powerful team that can get to the top of the tower and finish all the side areas while upgrading the minimum number of hero guilds.

So I’m starting this thread to compare the T4 and T5 sets with each other, so that I and other people who are at late game stage can focus on only taking the best ones. Don’t say things to me like “it’s a matter of personal taste, it’s whether you prefer speed or power” or such : the sets in this game are absurdly imbalanced, and there are some of them which completely suck (basically all the sets which don’t give speed bonuses).

My thoughts on T4 :
- the very best is dandy, by far. All his stats are great. With nearly as much defense as a T4 knight, he’s a great tank. And with his speed + high attack + lifesteal + rage, he heals very fast. Refined set bonus sucks though (rage II + 2 atk).
- then comes rangerling. Much better attack than soldier, but suffers in speed. Still a good deal, especially with refined shaman paint. Great with lifesteal.
- all the other T4 are average or below average, and I don’t really see how they are significantly better than T3. Plague doctor and butcher give a bit of speed, but it doesn’t seem enough. Chaplain gives no speed, so he seems really bad. Conqueror is just slightly better than constable, so he’s a disappointment as well.

Globally I think that T4 is pretty disappointing except for dandy and rangerling. T5 on the other hand seems much better, but I really can’t afford it yet, so that’s why I’m asking. Can someone compare T5 equips for me? If I can afford only one T5 (which will probably be the case), which one should I take? Currently I would say mountain guard : insanely great tank + speed bonuses for refined set!

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [The Grinns Tale] <TO DEV> marketplace building

The dev is considering to make the marketplace you want, but it seems he’s currently working on something else so it’s not at the top of his priority.

@TZwien : if you’re stuck, that probably means that your equipment is not good enough, just wait until you can get higher tier equips and it’ll get the job done. For spiders typically use soldier/shaman/constable or soldier/soldier/constable.
