I thought I’d put an update on all we’ve done. So we now also have Dragon Roost, the LoZ Ocarina of Time warp songs, Dire Dire Docks, and Atlantis from Banjo Tooie. In a couple of weeks when winter break let’s out, we’ll get a ton done!

Two new zelda ones are up! Goron city from Ocarina of Time and Milk bar from Majora’s Mask. I feel like Milk Bar needs some more recognition, really cool song. Hope you like them!

Topic: The Arts / Feedback Wanted on Compositions

Hi everyone, I made a new YouTube channel to show compositions I’ll be making. One day I would like to write music for video games, like the many composers I take inspiration from: Koji Kondo, Grant Kirkhope, Junichi Masuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Jack Wall… the list goes on.

My hope is that this channel will help me in several respects (that is, if I get views). I’ll see what people hear in my music (i.e. the environmental imagery it invokes), what they like or dislike, and most importantly, what they can suggest to help me grow.

So feedback is not only welcome, it’s encouraged. This doesn’t need to be feedback from a music savvy with theory advice (although I DO want that), but feedback from anyone with a hint of video game knowledge or at least an imagination. The goal is, as implied earlier, to invoke an environment, whether that means a water world, or a fire a world, a mystical forest, or a rustic city, a desolate desert, or a pleasant village.

So let me know what you think, and most importantly, enjoy!

That’s great to hear! I’m really happy how that turned out too. And requests may be fun too….

So our newest song is also done… this time there’s a little twist though. It’s from an anime, not a video game. It’s called Crossing Fields, it’s the opening from the first Sword Art Online. I’ve never watched it, but hey, it’s a fun song. Tell me what you think!

Alright so we have a new video up! I’m really excited about this one. It’s Clanker’s Cavern from Banjo Kazooie (Grant Kirkhope is one of my favorite composers). So hope you enjoy!

And sorry for the late response… i missed this. But about headphones, yea it’s generally fine, but it depends on your speakers. On our phones for example the clipping is awful, so you really need headphones. We’re doing our best to minimize this. So to everyone, just find out what works for you :)

And hopefully we’ll have another up by the end of this week or next!

1st upload from Earhbound! I feel like not as many people know this game as it deserves. Maybe not the best game, but certainly gives off a cool, original vibe

Just a side note, our next one will probably take a while. Feel free to offer suggestions or simply discuss (yea… comments would be nice)

Yea ik. A lot of the times we choose to do the videos kind of spontaneously, so we don’t always have the best mallets. We still put consideration into it though. We don’t really have other options for the mics. I think we’re going to keep it at the angle in the dk64 video. We think it has the best visual/sound.

And on a other note, we have a new video! Our first Final Fantasy song, I think it came out well. We also had some of our own mallets which is always good.

Feedback welcome :)

First off. Thanks for the reply! Yea I was a little surprised too considering there were almost 200 views haha.

And thanks for the compliment! yes we’re both in high school, Junior and Senior. I focus mostly on marimba and jazz vibes. Although i started as a pianist (and still am). He’s more all around percussionists, and he plays set. I am too, but my snare is sub-par, and I don’t do set…

Yea we know about the mallets. are school’s tend to not be kept in good shape. I don’t bring mine cause i’m a scatterbrain and will lose them haha. Although the green headed ones are my friends. We try to pick our mallet choice wisely, but it’s not always the easiest thing to do..

And as for the recording device, I’m using my LG G2. it takes good video, but It clips a lot. Not as much on the computer. So part of it is the recording device (hope its not too noticeable)

Are you a percussionist?

Given the nature of the site, I’m going to guess most people here like video games. So who here likes the marimba? It’s my personal favorite instrument.

My friend and I have a youtube channel of us playing marimba duets of video game music (mostly, but not all nintendo): we’ve played Super Mario, Super Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Sonic, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Kirby, and Pokémon so far.

The channel is called GamerMarimbists

Topic: Game Programming / Best C# IDE Mac?

Yea I know it’s a mess. I have a mac, but i dont wanna learn objective-C because i’d want my programs to be cross-platform. to simplify what I’m asking, because i know i’m saying a lot of (incorrect) confusing things… what should i use to learn/write C# on mac? Xcode, MonoDevelop etc.?

Topic: Game Programming / Best C# IDE Mac?

Hey, so I’m beginning to learn c# (so i’m going to keep that as short as possible to not seem too ignorant), and I wanted to ask advice on what IDE to use? I have a mac, so no Visual Studio. From what I’ve read, you can code c#in Xcode, but there’s no .NET Framework (again, not sure what that means). I’ve also seen that MonoDevelop is an alternative. I’ve also seen some people say to write in notepad (with the plugin C# intellisense).

Obviously for a long, i’ll simply be learning the language and programming concepts. But eventually I’d like to make programs/apps for mainly android devices, maybe desktop (not flash or web based) and eventually games (I know it’ll take probably years). So I assume this means I should also look for a GUI with the IDE?

Alright so would you suggest coding c# in Xcode, monoDevelop, notepad, or something else? And should i look for one with a GUI (if the one you suggest doesn’t have one)?

Thanks, help is much appreciated!

*Note that I am a beginner programmer. Although I’ve started some basics before, I’m relearning the language as if I know nothing

Topic: Game Programming / N64 game build codes?

Well this is mostly out of curiosity…

I know that N64 games are written in C. Is it possible to look at the code for any of the games? Specifically Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, or Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie (because I’m most familiar with those) This is really for the purpose of learning application of code, and just plain old curiosity. I’m aware that the C used in N64 is different then the typical C syntax (e.g. no main() function, and the presence of boot() functions) And I also know that much if it is probably obfuscated, any codes that aren’t?

Also note that I’m not looking for an entire code, i just want an idea

PS. Tell me if I’m not technically allowed to ask about this because of copyright and such!

From the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Just thought I’d show this in case anyone is interested in watching. It’s a cool piece. I personally like it because of the pedal note and the relentless crescendo/decrescendo. I’d appreciate feedback too, thanks!

I’m aware of a few minor mistakes… nothing too major.

Topic: The Arts / Writing Music?

look a lot at the chords. theres a lot of common progressions that help, I, IV, V is a very notable progression for example. i try to use chromatics in the bass line when i can, i just find that sounds good. also cadences are important. generally will end with some kind of authentic cadence (V-I). and for in transitions, half cadences are good (generally I-V). you can also do a lot of cool things with a deceptive cadence (V-vi). also look at leading tones, and make sure they lead back to tonic. basically what you should do is start with a key. lets say u choose a minor, and easy key to work with. generally it’ll be harmonic minor, so share the g’s. and look at some chords that’d fit good. fourth and fifths are good like i said, so d minor and e major are good. idk if you learned about secondary dominance yet. to simplify, its a mini key change, generally in the key of the fifth. for example, V/V is used a lot, fifth of fifth. fifth of a minor is e major. fifth of e major is b major. i like to us those a lot, especially in a bridge section. then it’ll probably resolve to the fifth again. I’d suggest doing chords first, then build a melody (some people would say otherwise). I like to have ideas like this in my head, BUT like edeslash said, music is subjective. i like to just play around and find things that sound good. then analyze it theory-wise, which helps to improve parts.

Ps. This kind of turned into ramble…. so i’ll clarify things if you need me to
