Topic: Serious Discussion / Does suicide mean you are going to hell??

Eternal punishment with no chance of redemption is absolutely ridiculous. God would have to be a total jerk to send anyone to Hell. “Well, I put you all on earth and I expect unrelenting faith in me based on one of many holy books claimed to be written by me. Although I make no clear distinction, the Christian one is the one that you should follow.”

Also, I agree with Paradoxymoron. Even the most evil, wicked person does not deserve Hell. If I were God, nobody would go to Hell, and I’m pretty sure God is a lot nicer than I am.

Einar: Why is your donut-world better than today’s world?

Why does everyone assume the existence of the soul? There’s absolutely no evidence for it.

Notice the airquotes and the phrase “For lack of a better word”. This should be an indicator that maybe I’m trying to say something other than the conventional meaning. Also, I didn’t finish that point in my skipping around. I was using the word soul to describe your individual self-awareness.

And there is existence of an individual self-awareness.

I think that the reasoning behind us is it makes us feel special, like we are set apart from other animals by design, rather than by a evolutionary pathway that favored beings with larger brains.

Can a machine with the same capacity as a human brain be conscious?

Also, the reason I asked all of those questions was to you know, have people answer them.

Re: “Earth sucks, therefore God does not exist”

http://www.k-1.com/Orwell/site/work/essays/fun.html

Because this essay is really long, I’ll summarize it:

Perfection is not simply an absence of “bad”. Utopian socialism (Keep in mind Orwell defined himself as a Socialist, the title criticizes Utopianism.) and the concept of Heaven are flawed. Happiness cannot exist without something to compare it to.

If all we did on earth was hug eachother and make pleasant conversation, it would really suck. This is also why I believe that we don’t go to heaven permanently. It wouldn’t be very exciting at all.

Prior to your birth, you ceased to exist. Then suddenly, you are the subject of electrical and chemical processes that lead to self-awareness. But why that specific bundle of atoms? Why not another? What caused you not to cease to exist? If you cease to exist after you die, but you also cease to exist prior to your birth, why is there a transition from nonexistence to existence at birth?

Is in not possible that you could die, cease to exist, then at some point cease to cease to exist and end up in a random batch of electrical and chemical processes?

Somewhat unrelated question(s):

If you die, and someone resurrects you, are you still the one in the resurrected body? What if you are disassembled atom by atom, then reassembled? And what if you are killed, but an exact atomic copy is created elsewhere?

Also, is it possible that someone can be alive but not actually have a “soul” (for lack of a better word); that is, they act based on the chemical processes in their

What do I know about the afterlife? Nothing. It is impossible with our current resources to prove anything, even nonexistence. I believe in a benevolent God, but not exactly God as depicted in the bible (that God was kinda mean), but I cannot prove it, nor is it relevant.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Don't Tread On Me: A Libertarian Thread

Okay, I haven’t read this thread since my last post 2 pages ago, and this is what I have to say:

ee80: Stop being an asshole. I thought we went over this already. It doesn’t make your point sound more solid, it makes you sound like an asshole. You’ve clouded your actual responses (Which, to most points, you had none) with “You’re a moron”.

Personally, I post in debate forums not to teach or convince the other person (unless they are very clearly wrong about something), but to learn. To learn what others have to say about their opinions, whether or not they are correct, and why. When you go “you’re a moron I’m not going to bother responding” to anyone, is that helpful?

No, it’s not.

Second of all,

>>>GTFO of this thread with the socialist BS please
Uh, what?
Me: “Libertarianism is bad”
You: “No, read this article on why socialism is bad”
Me: “No, socialism is not bad”
You: “WTF stop with your socialism”

Yeah.

Third of all, in response to not paying taxes, it’s a pointless endeavor. It’s like me refusing to get a job because I don’t like the way our market is set up. I’ll I’m doing is hurting myself and my message doesn’t get anywhere. Besides, you have no way to distinguish yourself from guys that are like “lulz i dont like taxes xP”

Yes. A light hearted banner on the side of a few busses for a few weeks doesn’t come under “pushing their views”.

So you have no problem with a billboard saying “God loves you regardless or not if you love him.” or “I don’t believe in killing unborn babies”?

(Just for the record, I am pro-choice. But that’s another topic.)

Topic: Serious Discussion / Don't Tread On Me: A Libertarian Thread

>>>Before you dictated that I have to write you an essay on something by Orwell and Das Kapital, I quoted something ridiculous from Orwell, so I know better than to take that garbage seriously.

Oh, I get it. I have to read articles, but you can simply casually dismiss them. That makes sense. George Orwell was a genius no matter what political affiliation you have. Also, why do you keep bringing up communism? I’m pretty sure I made a post a while ago stating communism was not practical in today’s world. So, I don’t know where you’re getting this.

>>>You guys like to argue from multiple viewpoints, whichever is convenient at the time for you. Refer to #10 about the “middle of the road statist”.

And you like to pretend everything that has the word “socialism” attached to it is exactly the same. I don’t agree with Hobolad on how socialism should be executed. Yet we are both still “socialists”.

>>>The only way for a socialist country to continue to work is with a totalitarian regime. You are either a libertarian country, with as little gov. involvement as possible or, you have some socialist aspects which continue to grow like cancer until you end up with the totalitarian regime.

That’s absurd. Absolutely absurd. The world is not a 1-dimensional line with LIBERTARIANISM on one side and SOCIALISM on the other. Libertarianism on personal issues that do not harm society is cool. Free market capitalism on any entertainment and luxury goods is nearly flawless.

>>>You’re using pizza because it’s unhealthy, correct? That’s the error in your analogy. You should compare rice to sugar or something like that; with socialism being sugar.

Uh, that’s my point. You can’t live off of Rice and you can’t live off of Sugar. Although I consider pure socialism to be a hell of a lot better than pure libertarianism, it’s not the ideal in my opinion.

>>>I can say that Libertarianism = Food and Socialism = Poison because it is the truth.

No, it’s not. Don’t make arguments that require no other response than “No, it’s not”. I made a clear explanation on the flaws of Libertarianism a page or two ago.

>>>O_o what? That’s the least intelligent thing I’ve heard in a while.
as ee said, true socialist? No
Socialist in nature? Yes

McCain is socialist because he supports public education.

It is a better idea without the social programs. Actually, without the social programs is the only way it can truly work. It’s either laissez-faire success, or a slow descent into a socialist totalitarian regime.
In any compromise between food and poison, it is only death that can win. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit. There is no middle ground here. What is the middle ground between life and death? Between truth and lies? It is the middle ground that you are suggesting.

This is just absurd. 1. Where the hell did totalitarian come from? 2. This is an absurd viewpoint for several reasons. First of all, you assume the only two forms of government are libertarianism and communism. Second of all, these issues are not black and white. You can’t say “LIBERTARIANISM = FOOD COMMUNISM = POISON”. Because it is not that simple. What you’re basically saying is:

“Pizza is the best food ever. Since it is so amazing, I will eat it all the time and will not compromise by eating inferior foods.”
“But that’s silly, you cannot survive off of just Pizza, it’s bad for you and you’ll eventually get sick. You need to balance it with other things.”
“Nonsense. Pizza is flawless and balancing it with other things will only detract from its flawlessness.”

I know the anti-capitalists don’t seem to like to read links

How’s that Orwell essay coming along?

No, I did not read the entire story. I read the first paragraph of each section as well as a few of them more in-depth, which is enough to know it’s a ridiculously big strawman. The rest of the article basically says “Libertarianism works”.

Also, when did I say capitalism is a bad idea? I think it is a fine idea when combined with social programs such as school, healthcare, transportation, minimum wage, food standards, police, etc etc.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Reincarnation True?

I like the Hindu “Your next life is based on how you performed in the last one” theory. Not based on any sort of science or logic, but I think it would be a pretty cool way for it to work. Rather than punish people with eternal pain, punish them by giving them a crappy life and allowing them to redeem themselves.

I’ve tried arguing with you in other threads, and you didn’t listen there either. I’m not even going to waste my time on you. If other people would like to argue with me with valid arguments, I’ll return them.

Have you ever considered that just because someone disagrees with you doesn’t mean they aren’t listening? You assume that your argument is flawless and if people don’t agree with you, they must be deaf.

Number one most effective and condescending way to not address an argument.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Politically Incorrect Gudie to Politics

This was good until it advocated libertarianism.

Not a single analogy in part 1 worked at all. Consider this analogy:

“In a family, there is relatively little “private” property. Members of the family share their wealth and their possessions and use what they have when they need or want to, and resolve conflicts over this property through compromise. This sort of sharing and compromise over private property works on a small, family scale, so why would it not work on a government scale?"

I could further go into someone’s home and try to assign ownership to forks and knives in their houses and tape the conflicts this causes.

This analogy is ridiculous. But it’s no more ridiculous than the ice skating rink analogy, which basically uses the same technique.

Part 2 does not prove anything about deregulation being good, it just said “The government did stupid things”. Yes, the bailout was a bad idea. Deregulation is also a bad idea.

In part 3, Katrina was poorly executed. That does not mean the government should stay out of everything. And yes, permits often go to far. That does not mean the government should stay out of everything.

Part 4 is also true. Many people in government abuse the system to keep out fair competition. This does not mean the government should stay out of everything.

Part 5 is anecdotal. The entire thing.

The US government is corrupt. This does not mean that we should just get them out of our lives. It means we should limit corruption. Then we can get things done in conjunction with the government.

Our government fucked with the economy too much, created a stacked deck and then inflated the crap out of it. Research the Austrian Theory on the business cycle.

This is the land of opertunity. (i dont care how i spell lol :P)
they should not take from the people who earned there wealth should have to give it up.

What does it mean to “earn” money?

Did someone that robbed a bank earn their money? What about someone who won the lottery? What makes someone with $100 million a year any different than these two people?

What people dont tell you is that alot of them give to charity.

A lot don’t too.

Who cares if you own seven houses you have the money you earned it do it if you want to.

Because you could get rid of 6 of those houses and pay for universal healthcare. You don’t need those houses to be happy. Also, see my previous statement on earning.

Life isn’t fair, life sucks, get used to it.

It’s fair and cool under Socialism. The concepts of “freedom”, “earnings” and “rights” inhibit what people actually want – happiness and opportunity.

This is a pretty acurate site, but I wouldn’t recommend it to be the only thing considered. I consider my self a slightly libertarian liberal, but that thing said I was just as libertarian as I was Liberal. (-5.38(liberal), -5.23(libertarian))

Agreed, just using it to illustrate the concept. Some of the questions are worded funny, but it’s overall pretty accurate. I consider myself somewhat socially libertarian and VERY economically leftist, and I got I got -8.12 left/right and -5.74 libertarian/totalitarian

Both are mediocre. We need more than 2 valid political parties in order to have a functioning, not-corrupt, efficient country. Not every issue can be simplified into “ME VS. THEM”.

I heavily favor Democrats over Republicans though. Democrats are a bit too conservative, but Republicans are wacko-extremist conservative.

“Facts” with not a source in sight

Better than “Facts” with a biased source.

Here’s an essay written by George Orwell about English society and merits of Socialism:

http://www.k-1.com/Orwell/index.cgi/work/essays/lionunicorn.html

I expect you to read the entire thing and write an analysis or I will ignore all of your posts and dismiss them as invalid. I also expect you to read all three 800 page volumes of Das Kapital.

Obviously my points are not facts. Nothing in this thread is, aside from the occasional raw, unbiased statistic. But the interpretations of it are not facts. Adding articles does not make your point more valid – it’s just someone else stating your opinion.
