Topic: Game Programming / Get user profile through API

obviously i could filter out defaults…
I was actually considering avatars too, but lots of people have default avatars. I’ve successfully data-scraped it from the site but i’d have to use a proxy server (reason games are hosted on chat.kongregate.com instead of main domain – so that i can’t go into your account & change stuff through flash game).

Topic: Game Programming / Get user profile through API

Is there a way to get a user’s profile text through the API? For example, though my profile it would return “I am an amateur programmer…”

The closest thing I can find is user-info but it doesn’t include the profile text. I’m trying to make a quiz that would give a friend’s description and the user would have to pick which friend it is.

The Facebook login didn’t seem to work for me so I had to log in manually. You also might not want to make the user wait between choices during setup (e.g. make all the choices first, then say “waiting for other users to make their choices…”).

AWESOME!!! Really it is! One thing I’d suggest is being able to play with your Facebook friends. It’s a little awkward voting on lynching someone if the only thing they’ve said is “hi”. Plus, you may want to have more specific instructions… I didn’t know about the “will” feature until after I was dead, and I still don’t know how being a mafia member works.

Nice job doing audial cues, so many games will simply blurt music out. I haven’t seen a well-choreographed music game that doesn’t cost upwards of $20.

Topic: Game Programming / As3: How to Access a variable from another class

Oh wow, I didn’t even see the code (did you post that after I wrote it or did I just miss it?).

Yes, in that case, you wouldn’t want to make the variable non-static (unless you have some insanely bizarre rule that you can only have one bullet at a time) and public in order to get it from the object.

Topic: Game Programming / As3: How to Access a variable from another class

It really depends on you mean.

First of all, you’ll have to make the variable public (use public var… instead of private var…).

Secondly, if you’re trying to access it from the class name itself instead of an instance of that class, you’ll have to make it static (then use public static var). You then have to use ClassName.myVariable instead of someObjectOfClass.myVariable.

Add me in just so I’m there, but I might not have time to make a game every month.

Oh, you didn’t like my theme :( Oh well, I probably wouldn’t be able to think of anything for it anyways!

Topic: Game Programming / uploaded new version, but old version shows up

Make sure you’re clearing the cache on chat.kongregate.com, where the game is hosted. If you clear the cache on www.kongregate.com, that won’t do anything for your game.

Other than that, just patience. Right now I see your game on version 1.1.2, so it definitely updated.

(One reason that games are hosted on chat.kongregate.com is so that you can’t do a JavaScript request to the site and do something like make a purchase or change a password)

Topic: Game Programming / 20 MB limit??

You can always host it elsewhere and use an iFrame game.

But what are you doing to make an SWF that is 20MB?

Topic: Game Programming / PaperGuy (for lack of a better name) (in-dev)

It’s a nice start, obviously needs more content but I know it’s just a demo.

Pretty good for two weeks, I’d love to see it when it comes out!

How about, in keeping up with current events, The Life and/or Death of MochiGames?

Topic: Game Programming / Trying to Become a Game Dev- Need Help

Programming looks a lot harder than it really is, it just takes some time to get used to it. I’d start out with Scratch in order to get the feel for programming. Once you’ve mastered that, you should try out Stencyl, which is directly based off Scratch but for flash games. After that, you could try out ActionScript (I’d recommend FlashDevelop for Windows or Flash Development Toolkit for Mac/Linux if you don’t want to purchase Adobe Flash Pro).

Topic: Game Programming / How do I download AS3?

Adobe Flash Professional is probably the best program for it, but it is very expensive (if you’re not making quite a bit of money off your games, it’s probably not a good investment). Flash Develop (see earlier posts for the link) is a free alternative for Windows. Flash Development Toolkit is a program for Mac, Windows, and Linux that I use (it can be used as its own program or an add-on to a program named Eclipse). If you’re completely insane, you can use a normal text editor and use the terminal/command prompt to turn it into an SWF with the Flex SDK (which you might have to download anyways).

Topic: Game Programming / what does kongregate support

Just a minor correction, they do support Java directly in addition to an iFrame.

Topic: Game Programming / what does kongregate support

To answer the question, Kongregate only officially supports Flash, HTML5, and Unity. However, you can use an iFrame game anything that can be directly embedded in HTML (JavaScript, Java, or even a server-based game written in a language such as PHP or ASP), but just know that the more uncommon the programming language the less likely people are to have it installed, and the more likely they will simply ignore your game.

Topic: Game Programming / MochiAds disabled or not allowed?

Can we put something in place of that black square? Like “Ads have been filtered out on Kongregate. Enjoy the game!” so it doesn’t look like we just put a black square there for no reason?

Topic: Game Programming / MochiAds disabled or not allowed?

I’m beginning to develop a flash game for Kongregate, and I am confused on one point. It is clearly stated that MochiAds (or any external ad provider) are not allowed on Kongregate. Does this mean I have to keep a separate SWF with MochiAds and without MochiAds, or will it automatically filter out the MochiAds on Kongregate?

I’d like to invite some of my non-Kong+ friends to our town… but when will it be out of beta? It’s been in beta for a month today. Do we know when the game will be public?

Topic: Kongregate / Inter-connected Games

I’m currently working on a Flash game series called Fightmon. One of the things we are doing is inter-connecting them. For example, if you upgrade a tower to max level, you could get a bonus powerup in another game. My question is, has anyone ever tried this before? If so, how well was it received?

Yes, you can. http://forums.kixeye.com/showthread.php?t=321222 But I’m not sure how much compensation they are planning on giving.
