Topic: Serious Discussion / American Shame: My Lai Massacre

Actually, what we also learn in class is that the Vietnam war also to a larger extent helped thaw relations with China and the USA during the Cold War. Also, it is to note that due to the unsuccessful war waged in Vietnam, Nixon was keen to direct the attention elsewhere, i.e. China.
It is true to say that most wars fought during the Cold War period were critical both ideologically and politically. Ever since the Cold War started, it is always East vs West and even by 1972, it was USSR vs East vs West. As a result, it has always been all about the politics within that period.
What I believe that pete is trying to establish is that no matter what army you are from, war never changes. Yes, the method of war changes, from arrows to bullets, but the brutality and merciless spirit of the human being. At the same time, I feel that it is a grim reminder that in war, not everyone is a soldier. It is always the civilians that suffer when the bullets whizz and the shells crack.
And I don’t think that pete is just trying to show off. Why out of all the examples would he only choose the My Lai massacre? Obvious massacres would be Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide or any form of ethic cleansing. I think the My Lai massacre is well chosen here. It just shows how corruptible the “incorruptible” are. When you’re fighting for a political leader because as he says you are fighting for your family when they are safe miles apart, across an ocean, or you’re fighting for your home (http://existentialcomics.com/comic/24). You take it out on those that cannot retaliate because the next day you will be facing one that can.

Guys, this whole post is wrong. I believe that bullets are the ones that are in charge of possession.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Robin Williams Suicide

Mrs Doubtfire, hands down my most favourite film from Robin Williams.

I was thinking that. Will they remember me for what I loved to do, or what I did to pay the bills. Still, to be loved for your work, and to still want to kill yourself, what does that?

Topic: Serious Discussion / Should shark fishing be banned?

I’ve seen fishermen kill baby sharks just for their fins and I find that disgusting. I’m going to put it this way that it would be illegal to just hunt sharks for the fins alone. If the shark was to be hunted, the whole shark should be taken for consumption not just the fins. I guess it should be just like the King Crabs in Alaska, there should be a certain measurement that fishermen must abide by. However, this would still arise to illegal fishermen so its still a double edge sword.

I have to correct you on this. The shark fin is not used to decorate but rather it is eaten as it has a chewy texture. The main importance in the soup is actually the fin as it gives the texture for the food instead of being decoration. Shark meat is actually also eaten but in lesser amounts as the meat is actually rubbery and tasteless. This is why shark meat is generally unpopular with the fishermen population.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Is it right to kill one person to save the lives of many?

I have to totally agree that a political backdrop would happen if you remove World War 2. I guess one of the most impacts that came out of World War 2 would be the death of colonialism. The Japanese in the second world war exposed the weaknesses of the colonial masters and that sparked off a cry for independence from all the colonies. A lot of our modern culture and world is an influence from World War 2 and situations that were created by the war. Take away Hitler there would still be other problems faced at that point of time.
Communism was on the rise and the only reason why Hitler came to power was due to the rise in Communism. President Hindenburg was an anti-communist and saw that Hitler was a great candidate to counter the Communist.
The Great Depression another factor that led to Hitler’s rise. The Nazi party the years before had suffered terribly, thanks to Stressmann who had led Germany to a new Golden Age. The Nazi Party was down to about 7% of all votes. However, the Great Depression had put the Nazi Party back into the same position of power and received 38% of all votes in the next election.
You say that Hitler had been evil. Go ahead, shoot him. These would still continue to happen. Just another man who would take his place. It is never about the person, it is about the events that lead to the person. War would still happen.

Speaking about bombs, how about Nobel? The guy who invented dynamite that ultimately led to the creation of bombs and the usage of explosives in war. Why should we not shoot him, he killed millions due to his invention. What makes him a lesser villain than Hitler?

The only question I have though is is it limited to time travel. Because what about self-sacrificial? Like when you hold a position by yourself to give people time to retreat and you get overrun are you not saving people’s lives at the expense of your own?
