Topic: Serious Discussion / Donald Trump thinks it is strange Obama does not produce his birth certificate

Oh yeah, anyone remember that several states were trying to implement ‘birther bills’ to force any future presidential candidates to prove they were born in the USA before running? Well, guess what happened when Republican Secretary of State for Arizona Ken Bennett applied these requirements to Obama’s birth certificate?

In a Phoenix NBC affiliate interview, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett examined a copy of President Obama’s published Certification of Live Birth and said that its contents meet the requirements of the Arizona birther bill, HB2177, which was passed by the Arizona house last Thursday and is headed to the governor for signature.

But hey, what does a secretary of state know about legal documentation anyway, right? I’d much rather believe these guys than the Republican who’s actually legally qualified to make these sorts of decisions.

Certificates of birth are given to people born in foreign countries, and only have to fill out the info themselves.

Ugh, no, that’s bullshit. If you were born in a foreign country then yes, you can get a certificate of birth from the state department of Hawaii. But the certificate will say you were born in a foreign country. If you want your birth certificate to say you were born in Hawaii then you have to show evidence that you were born in Hawaii. The Hawaii DoH says:

The Certificate of Hawaiian Birth program was established in 1911, during the territorial era, to register a person born in Hawaii who was one year old or older and whose birth had not been previously registered in Hawaii. The Certificate of Hawaiian Birth Program was terminated in 1972, during the statehood era.

Okay? sheesh

Certificate of birth short form are given away to anyone to write anything on

No, they’re not. The certificate says at the bottom, and I quote: This copy serves as prima facie evidence of the fact of birth in any court proceeding. The reason Obama hasn’t released any other version of his birth certificate is because he doesn’t have to. What he’s released is perfectly adequate for any legal process and everyone except the fringe wingnuts who wouldn’t be happy with anything he released anyway.

Here’s another fun website for y’all to ignore.

Has anyone been through this article yet and come up with decent rebuttals to any of the points?

No?

Okay, carry on spouting ill-informed tripe.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Is a pascal equivalent to a joule?

I don’t think so.

A joule is 1N m

A pascal is 1N/m^2

So I guess to convert one to the other you’d divide the answer by the value of m to get pascals. Basically meaning that a joule = Pa m^3

But they’re not equivalent anyway, since one’s measuring energy and one’s measuring pressure. No idea what you’d have to do to them to get a workable equation.

Obvious foreigner is obvious.

Obvious person who knows how to use the internet is obvious.

I have never in my life heard of a “stone,” “quarter,” “hundredweight,” “chain,” or “furlong”

Yeah, imperial is so needlessly complicated that most people don’t even use half of the units in everyday life any more. Horse racing still uses furlongs though, for whatever reason.

You can either have

16 ounces = 1 pound
14 pounds = 1 stone
2 stones = 1 quarter
4 quarters = 1 hundredweight = 112 pounds
20 hundredweight = 1 ton = 2240 pounds

or

1000 milligrams = 1 gram
1000 grams = 1 kilogram
1000 kilograms = 1 tonne

for weight. And you can have either:

12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
22 yards = 1 chain
10 chains = 1 furlong
8 furlongs = 1 mile

or

10 millimeters = 1 centimeter
100 centimeters = 1 meter
1000 meters = 1 kilometer

for distance. Seems pretty obvious to me which is simpler.

Rofl. It was hilarious.

No, the only funny thing is that STDs and masturbation are exactly the sorts of things a person brought in to a school to talk about puberty should be talking about.

You ‘trolled’ her by bringing up subjects which are important for kids to know about and which she’d probably have talked about anyway. The only thing you did was write one of them down using immature language, and you’re actually immature enough to find those topics funny.

Way to pwn, man.

They aren’t as much of a minority as you think.

That’s a depressing thought.

It’s good news for Democrats though.

Yeah, anyone moderate enough to be vaguely electable isn’t going to be acceptable to the Tea-Partiers and hence won’t get the nomination; and anyone extreme enough to get Tea Party backing (i.e. Palin, Bachmann, Trump, Paul) hasn’t got a prayer with moderate voters. Only Huckabee or Romney have got a chance that I can see, and they’re either too undecided or too Mormon to get the nomination. The GOP is pretty much screwed for 2012 imo.

Do these people not think that the Republican governor of Hawaii, or the Clinton campaign during the primaries, or the McCain campaign during the election, or Fox News nowadays, would be making an issue of it if there were any merit to the theory? Do they think the security services who vetted Obama prior to his election would be taken in by something that some tinfoil-hat wearing nutjob with photoshop worked out? Do they think Karl Rove, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter and John Boehner actually love Obama and are conspiring to keep him in power? Do they think, period?

The only reason Trump’s using this as a campaign issue is to appeal to the same stupid people who might vote for him because he’s a celebrity and because they get to say ‘OBAMA…UR FIRED!!! LOLOLOL’ every damn time this comes up.

He claims the president’s grandmother says Obama was born in Kenya. In fact, the recording to which he refers shows Sarah Obama repeatedly saying through a translator: “He was born in America.”

Yeah, that whole situation was disgusting. Some right-wing pastor sent one of his missionaries in Kenya to interview Obama’s grandmother under the pretence of doing a feature about him. He purposefully phrased the question of where Obama was born confusingly, and then had it relayed to the old woman through an interpreter. He tried to get her to say it again, but she shut him down five times, so they simply cut that portion of the conversation out of the evidence presented. It’s really sad how birthers just parrot the grandmother story without looking into it properly. Anything to support your agenda, right? If you can read through this entire article and still have some decent points to make that aren’t shot down in it, let us know. Otherwise, shut up already.

The only evidence you’ve presented is right-wing bloggers citing other right-wing bloggers for proof. The CAC involved many people from the Chicago political world of which Obama was part, so it’s hardly a massive surprise that he was on the board of it. Hell, even Bill Clinton praised the CAC. Are you going to claim he’s buddies with terrorists as well? While we’re at it, I suppose all of these people are dangerous individuals who should be investigated for their ties to Bill Ayers? Give me a break.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1810338,00.html

So Obama met Ayers ‘sporadically in life’. Big whoop. Ayers is a prominent figure in education in Chicago and Obama served on the board of an educational foundation in Chicago. It’d be more surprising if they hadn’t had some contact with each other.

The idea of Obama’s autobiography being ghostwritten by Ayers is based on that one man, Cashill. He tried to recruit a professor of philosophy to back him up, but the professor refused when Cashill said he wouldn’t publish the findings if they didn’t support him. The professor did the research anyway, and his shocking discovery was that if you use Cashill’s analysis methods you can also ‘prove’ that Ayers ghosted Clinton’s autobiography as well! It’s absolutely laughable that you’d try to use this amazingly sketchy ‘evidence’.

I know, did you miss my first paragraph or something?

And also from your own source, George Bush’s lowest approval was 25.7 whilst Obama’s was 19.4 on 2/3/2009 FOR 3 DAYS.

What? No it wasn’t. You’re right about Bush, but Obama’s approval rating on 2/3/2009 was 61.8, and his disapproval was 19.4. I think you might have mixed up the approval and disapproval figures. For future reference, the black line indicates approval and the red line indicates disapproval.

Experience does teach you. Don’t act like him not having experience makes him a better president. And why’d you bring cancer into this?

I didn’t say not having experience makes him a better president, I said that McCain being older doesn’t necessarily mean he would have been a better president, as shown by his errors in judgement.

And I mentioned cancer because as an old man who has a history of poor health it was a ridiculous decision to put Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Bush’s approval ratings were only that high because he got a huge bump from 9/11. People were scared so they clung to figures of authority and were all WOO WAR ON TERROR, and with the climate at the time expressing disapproval of the president would be seen as expressing disapproval of America; any idiot would have had high approval ratings after that. His presidency was an inexorable downward spiral apart from that and the bump he got from prematurely declaring MISSION ACCOMPLISHED in Iraq. Obama on the other hand has had no national tragedy to unite common thought behind him, he entered office with a terrible economic situation (in stark contrast to Bush), and has caught the tail end of public anger over Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bush’s lowest approval rating was 26%, and Obama’s lowest so far is 44%. I’d hardly call that ‘barely missing’. Bush also had maximum disapproval ratings of 70%, whereas Obama’s highest is 50%.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/archive/?poll_id=19

If you go here you can see that practically every president’s approval rating has plunged in their first year and a half or so. When Bush finally left office he was the most unpopular president since Nixon.

It’s easy for McCain to say what he wanted to do and what he would have done, but we’ll never know how it would have worked once he was in office. Honestly I’d be more concerned about him making jokes about bombing Iran and nominating a literal idiot with no experience as his VP when he’s an old man with a history of cancer. Experience doesn’t necessarily give you good judgement.
