It looks like you’ve got one in the wrong place. It helps if you format the code by going tab every time you open bracket {

It makes the code easier to read and debug, especially when you start working with bigger files. =)

Coding the initial concept of the program seems to be where the fun is – once you get into extra levels and upgrades and big menus and other small details, it takes the fun out of it and its more like just work. Then its like “oh, I’ll get round to finishing that later…”

You don’t need to change your enemies velocity – that’s overkill. If you want to pause your enemies, just add this same code you’ve added to your enterframe function for your ship to your enterframe function for your enemies.

If you’re playing the game swf locally on your own computer, there shouldn’t be any lag. Check you bullets.as – are you pushing them into an array? Are they being removed properly once they’ve gone out of the boundaries of the screen? eg.
if (x < 0 || x > WIDTH) ?

If you’ve uploaded your game to kongregate, then the chat room can cause lag in action games like shooters, depending on how busy the server is – at least that’s what I’ve experienced.

I added layers of background scrolling (parallax animation), enemies that can shoot at you by calculating distance and angles, spider leg animations (using more trigonometry), more powerups (like homing missiles – more trig) and my own groovy soundtrack:

Since then I’ve moved on and I’m currently working on a different new game that I hope to finish soon. It seems that people like more upgrades and features between levels and writing all the menus etc. to add those functions can be a bit tedious… coding, coding, coding….

Also, you want to make sure you have enemies in your array… if there are no enemies you’ll have issues.

Just iterating through an array of enemies, calculating distance using pythagoras theorem of (dx*dx)+(dy*dy), firing shots by calculating x and y velocity using Math.cos and Math.sin, nothing too difficult really… TD games are sooo last year. I’d write a TD game except that there too many clones out there now. Time for some other ideas.

Thanks. Got it sorted – got a nice loader now. Maybe I should be coding in AS2 rather than AS3 if I really want to obfuscate my code, but at least its a bit harder to get at.

Now all I have to do is write some new games so I can use my fancy new preloader!

Hey, i wrote a loader for my game… its really cool – I used the kongregate animated logo and everything, but if you upload a loader swf file that loads the main game swf, then your main game swf can’t access the kongregate stats API cause its in a separate security sandbox. If you try and run it, it causes Actionscript security errors. I tried playing with security.allowDomain(), but it didn’t help.
So if I want to integrate the kongregate API, I can’t use a loader. I could call the kongregate API from the loader, but then the main swf that has the game in it would have no way of accessing it, since it doesn’t know about the loader that its wrapped in. Any suggestions?

Wow, thanks for that – sounds quite involved, but I guess those are the lengths you have to go to if you want to protect your assets.
