Try disabling the forum-mute script, I think that’s the issue.

Yep thanks.

That’s odd that you claim to be clicking at exactly 3 am, and keep getting in the 40s. I click at exactly 3 am (and my connection isn’t that great either), and get much better numbers:

This can’t just be luck, your time must be off by a second or so. If you really want to nail it down, try refreshing a second sooner compared to your system clock (on a non Monday) and see what happens.

Interesting. I didn’t realize non-Kong+ people had more time to wait. This is definitely a contributing factor. (Does adblock remove the delay?)

Additionally, getting a low number for Kongbot is very impressive since we didn’t know it was coming. I hate the stupid 10k that I have for him.

So I did all that complaining about this being a competition and all that…

Well, it’s not so bad when I’m winning. :D
Now, who are you, 1 and 2?!

(Still would prefer to not stay up until 3 am though)

^ And response to FlyingCat: It feels exactly like class registration. Totally agree.

Topic: Kongregate / [New Feature] Introducing Kongpanions!

It seems that the few of us who are posting small criticisms of this new feature are being mostly ignored, and that saddens me. This whole thing is a great idea that could really reinvigorate the site, but a few minor tweaks would go a long way in making this perfect.

One of the main issues was answered by emily, that being the ability to reacquire K-pans after they expire. One of the great things about badges is the ability to earn the ones that were added back in 2007, even if you join seven years later. On the flip side, we have challenges/cards/stuff that cannot be earned once missed. It really comes down to the transparency of how much content was missed: If a new user sees something like “you have 1 out of 27 Kongpanions”, with no way to get the other 26, they will be upset. But if there’s no way to even know that they’re missing out, it matters less. Still, the last thing you want to do is alienate new users by telling them they’ll never be able to catch up.

The second issue is the one I discussed in my last post, and was reiterated by Adv0: Why are you making this a competition? Why does it matter who opens the game first at midnight? Why are you intentionally causing thousands of people to hit a game’s page at the same time every Monday? It’s probably not a big enough group to cause any real issues, but it’s still something that doesn’t need to happen. This also relates to the first issue: Say you do make them re-obtainable. Do people really want to see that they’re the 52,435 out of 52,539 to earn this? No. The only people that will feel good about their numbers are the ones staying up until midnight (again, 3 am EST which is much worse, I have classes on Mondays and don’t want to stay up). Of course a counter argument is, “Just don’t worry about the number, it doesn’t mean anything”. If you say that, then you clearly don’t understand the mind of a level 65 Kong user. :)

And the last issue (well, not so much an issue as a really, really important feature request) is what Bluji brought up. PLEASE offer these guys as rewards for achieving things on Kong. Reaching certain levels, getting numbers or percents of badges, visiting the site a lot. But the most important thing is that these goals need to be HARD. Adding one for reaching level 5 does nothing to encourage people to continue. But every 5-10 levels, up to 65, will make badge earning so much more enticing. There are so many badges now that it has probably become overwhelming to new users, but if they understand that each badge goes towards the cumulative goal of getting a new K-pan, it becomes less about getting the impossibly large pile of old badges and more about the realistic objective.

Admins, you really have hit on something great for this website. I hope you take the time to listen to your veteran users and adjust some things to make this work for everyone. Old users want to feel like they’ve really accomplished something, and new users don’t want to feel like they’ve missed out. Once a week is a good level ground and a good start, but this can become much more.

(Did I really just write a 5 paragraph essay? I feel like I’m back in middle school. :D)

I really like the idea (any new stuff to earn on this site is great), but I’m bothered by the “# earned out of #” part. I don’t think the order of earning really contributes anything significant to this feature, and if anything, will make people feel less important knowing that thousands of other people have already gotten it. And as far as getting one of the first ones, it’s simply a matter of being here at exactly midnight, which for people on the east coast is 3 AM. I would prefer not feeling obligated to stay up to 3 am just to have a lower number.

Maybe there’s a better way to make your Kongpanion unique other than “time you entered the site on Monday morning”?

Either way, I’m excited to see what other characters you have for the future.

Edit: Of course I’m referring to those of us who already have most of the badges, for those who don’t they naturally will have to take the time to play the games first… but I predict a mad rush of hits on the Monday game every week at 12 am to get a good number, which seems like kind of a pointless competition to me.

I even had some great discussions with users and you could even blame me for them starting a thread called “Mostly Harmless”. Most were nice and very humorous when they were chatting with me, but at times they could get a little innapropriate too and a bit mean. But they were much more nicer than mean. This room has no Room Mods but some Global ones. Even an admin owns it but he did not really chat much. This room also has a few former Mods who still log on at times. There was very little spam. Oh, and this room was harmless, well, mostly, so if you want to join, you probably will not be harmed by their actions.

Activity – 8

7 man? Really?
You stated that the chat almost never died. And then gave activity an 8.
The mods that you saw yesterday, Plujan and CometShade, are room mods. If they are on Kong, they are in MH.
You said there was very little spam. I was there all day, and can confirm that there was NO spam. But you gave us a 7.
I’ll give you that we may not be the friendliest at times, but I guess that’s a matter of opinion. (I think we’re super friendly for the most part, and any appearance of unfriendliness is in the name of humor)
You stated that you had great discussions with users, and then gave conversations a 7. I suppose this one is entirely opinion as well, but MH has some of the smartest people on Kongregate (you talked to Plujan yesterday, did you know he works at CERN?) I repeatedly attempted to converse with you yesterday graves, and you frequently didn’t respond. So you can’t blame us for not trying.

I’m writing this because I had a feeling you weren’t really paying attention yesterday because you seemed disinterested and were going to give us an average (7) for lack of interest. In fact, you were in one of the longest lasting and passionate rooms, we’ve had good discussions here for over five years with a lot of the same users. I probably care way more about this than I should, but then again, doesn’t that just tell you how important we (many) regulars think MH is?

So in conclusion, I give your review of Mostly Harmless a 3/10.

Can’t say I understand why so few people have this badge. It’s hard, sure, but it’s not fourth-hardest-on-the-site hard.

The last one though… I had to go really slowly to keep the cops ahead of me and avoid bombs. I was at 95% damage when I finally crossed the 8 mile mark.

Topic: Kongregate / [New] Split test on the game page

Really, the most important thing to me is being able to quickly go down and look at badge info. I like that it’s directly below the game now, and would prefer it stays there. Below that is game info, then comments, as it is now. New aesthetics are fine, but please keep the current order.

Also, after looking at the new layout a bit, I don’t like that only the shortened badge requirements are now shown, where it used to show the full descriptions. I like to be able to see the full description of all the badges at the same time, something that the achievements chat tab doesn’t allow (also, it requires closing the chat window).

Badges are what separate this site from other flash game sites, don’t put them in the background, throw them in the player’s face.

Topic: Kongregate / Flash Game + Badge Strategy Discussion threads

Writing a full guide for a site like KCG or Kongreguide requires much more of a commitment. In a forum topic, users would be able to post simple, one line tips, or full guides. Offsite guides restrict input to only those who know about the site and are bothered to make an account. Onsite allows anyone with a Kong account to post whatever.

The inspiration for this idea is the site angrybirdsnest.com. This site has a page for each level of angry birds (no matter how easy or hard it is), and then users post strategies in the comments, as long or as short as they want. They have a few dedicated admins who post full walkthoughs, but it is often the comments that are more helpful. I think we have way more hardcore Kongregate players than they have hardcore Angry Birds players. Sure, Angry Birds levels take much less time to write about, but they are released 15-30 at a time, while Kong games are badged one at a time. So, why are we unable to have guides while they succeed?

Topic: Kongregate / Flash Game + Badge Strategy Discussion threads

So, it’s been bothering me that there are no on site resources for many flash games. A lot of games have guides over at jayisgames, but not every game is on there, and often the strategies aren’t specifically suited for Kongregate badges. Game comments are also frequently unorganized and unhelpful.

A few months ago, I posted a topic about creating a new forum specifically for flash game discussion, as General Gaming is full of console stuff and almost no flash games. Sites like Armor Games and Newgrounds have forums like this. People seemed to dislike this idea, saying it was unnecessary, so I just shrugged and moved on.

But today I was playing through They Took Our Candy and I thought that it would be helpful if there was a place people could ask questions and give tips on the game (other than the comments, which are impossible to ask questions on or have your opinion noticed). To that end, I made this thread in General Gaming:
http://www.kongregate.com/forums/3-general-gaming/topics/306096-they-took-our-candy-discussion

The point of this post is to ask, do you think it would be useful for me to make a topic for every game in the future that gets badges? Or just the ones that seem moderately difficult? And if so, should it be in General Gaming or Kongregate? Or, is all of this just a stupid, unnecessary idea?

Each thread could not only have tips and text/video walkthoughs, but maybe there is someone interested in writing full reviews of flash games, just for fun?

Let me know what you guys think. If I get a warm response, I’ll continue to do this for future games that get badges.

TL;DR: Should each badged game get its own forum thread?

EDIT: A couple of people have noted that http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1-kongregate/topics/295910-new-badge-discussion is a place to do this. However, looking through the last few pages, I see no tips for any of (at least) the last three games to get badges. Also, if something useful was posted there for a specific game, and I wanted to find it a year from now, it’d be stupidly hard (especially if I didn’t know there even was a guide). If games had their own topics, you could just google the game and find it immediately.

Topic: General Gaming / "They Took Our Candy" Discussion

I’m thinking that it would be a good idea to create a thread for every game that receives badges, so that there’s a common place to discuss strategies and compliment how great the game is. Or whine about how crappy it is.
This has been happening for the most popular games, but having one for every game will help people who are going through old badges and having difficulty at a certain game.

Confection Collection Badge – Easy:
Collect 500 Candy

Invasion of the Candy Snatchers – Medium:

Sweet Stuff Badge – Hard:

Topic: Kongregate / [Tournament] LOUSY SMARCH MADNESS -- Round of 32 (Death vs. Monstars)

Alright, I have absolutely no chance to beat SSS’s score. I’m way too busy, and also I hate this game. Also he has one of the highest scores ever.

I would like to retire from this tournament, handing my position over to WiiPlayer113, if Precarious allows it.

Good luck to everyone else.
