Topic: The Arts / WLAC2 - Submissions

I started and finished a piece of art which includes the ocean, but it isn’t really about the ocean… I don’t think it includes enough of the ocean to be submitted :/

Besides, I don’t have a good enough camera. Oh, btw, do we have two hosts? I could’ve sworn dasmitimsad hosted the last one, maybe it was my strong imagination.

haha, if only you had a better camera. Oboe took over because I offered and I can’t always find the time to go on Kongregate. and if I can I usually can’t stay for too long.

About your other question… well I think that should be allowed… If a person was to use a c4d , fractal or texture etc, that would be kind of the same thing… It depends what others think as well though.

SotW ran fine with a new thread each week. Because – at most we’ll have two threads up at a time – last weeks, for voting and this weeks for entry. That’s not spam. Much cleaner that way, too.
I’m capable of managing the competition, if you’d like. – I’m excited! I’ve made this competition part of my new year’s resolution – a minimum of one decent drawing per week.

That’s cool, if you want to then you can! You seem to be on here more than I do, so it would probably be better for everyone. So… I guess, start a new competition thread whenever you think is best.

Brand New, a graphic design website, used to run a “Word of the Week” deal where they’d post a single word and the designers would interpret it in any way they saw fit. The posted dimensions were 300 by 300 precisely. There would be no “winner” but at the end of the year they would post their favorites. And this ran for years. It was a lot of fun.

The best part, for me, was not just the technical skill that was on display but the creative interpretations. I often would slap my head and think, “I wish I’d thought of that!”

Guess the point here is that a little bit of thematic guidance could help inspire and direct people.

Oh, and I would encourage separate threads per each week or whatever. It’s just easier to track the ones people are participating in.

Hmmm, that’s interesting… I’ve never thought of doing something like that before, but it sounds like a really good idea! It is possible we could try that out and see what people think of it.

Then why do we have to have a 600px x 600px rule? I found that quite annoying.

Das, could we make it a bit smaller? Because 600 as the SMALLER dimension on a drawing is quite large. Also, when’s the next one being posted? And in the future will it be as soon as voting starts (so there’s always one running? :) ) Also, when does voting end? A whole week, maybe?

Oh yeah… and seeing as everyone has to post a smaller version of their image anyway to fit the forums then it doesn’t really mean anything… Well let’s abolish that rule I think, or maybe have the rule that just one side has to be larger than 500px.

Hmmm I guess I just wanted to do this one so that I knew what to do for the next one… and now that it’s nearly over then it’ll be easier to stick to a new one every week. In the future there should be one running every week or every week and a bit… Possibly every fortnight, but that seems a bit long.

Are you changing the time limit of the contests, or is it always going to say weekly and then always have more time added? I suggest the new title; “Week and a Bit Slightly Large Art Competitions”. If it’s any consolation, I think WAABSLAC is a delightful acronym.

Well I think it should still be a set amount of time- being that one week, two weeks or a week and a bit… one or two weeks seems easier to work with for an ongoing competition though. This week we didn’t extend the time, so a deadline of one week shouldn’t be much of an issue… but after contestants become more tired of competing it might get a bit difficult to stick to…

Should we keep discussing it here before I create a new one? I could create one now, and just let the voting for week one continue until the posting of submissions for week two is complete…
I have a question regarding spamming the art forums. Should I create a new thread for each week, or should I just post each weeks competition in this thread? I think it would be more difficult to navigate after a few competitions.
Also, if anyone wants to, and feels they can manage this weekly/fortnightly/week-and-a-bit competition, then feel free to volunteer! I find myself having difficulty to get on to Kongregate a lot of the time, and when I get on I can’t usually stay for very long. I’m happy to though, I just want other people to have their competition managed by the best.

Oh, that would be better… Although the people who have already voted will have to post again with their 2nd and 3rd choices.

For me… 3 for GoGoogleIt

2 for Oboe

1 for Mattes

Moshdef, GoGoogleIt and pisser1234, would you please be able to post again with 2nd and 3rd votes.

I expected the first competition to be a bit unorganized…

Okay, competition is over! I’ll create a post in this thread later today (kind of late here…), unless anyone else wants to with all the entries and numbers so that people can vote. Also, I have thought of a rule which I forgot to add in… I think it is fair: You must vote for another entry for your entry to be included… Does everyone think this is reasonable, or should we not have it?

Wow, the quality of these all are fantastic! I’m thinking that if anyone asks before time is up to extend it (about 3 h 18 m), then time can be extended…

Just letting you all know that there are about 29 hours left to enter! I think it is reasonable to leave more time so that others can enter, but this depends on what you think as well Oboe, since you have already entered.

How do you check this?

And what’s the maximum number of entries one can enter?

We just have to trust people. I’d say just one, unless people start requesting more.

W.L.A.C is a new weekly competition which allows anyone to submit their artwork and compete. The submissions can then be voted on by yourself and others, but you may not vote for yourself. Your entries must follow the following specifications:

>Dimensions must be larger than 600 × 600 px
>Entries must follow the selected theme of the week
>Entries must be posted in the topic thread before time is up
>Entries cannot involve images created before the start of the week

First theme: No particular theme- Do whatever you want!

Post in this thread your entries, comments and questions.

Entries can be submitted within a week of original post.

Good luck!

Well it seems that there are quite a few people interested, should we vote for a theme?
My favourite theme to do would probably be abstract, since it allows so much room for creativity.

Thanks, I’ve read through all this and it should be very helpful. I’ve already edited the image of the girl and it’s looking a lot better in my opinion. I’ll have to work on the others as well.

Well, the conversation drifted off to SotW, that’s what was confusing. I’m not really bothered about the time constraints, if it’s 24 hours or a month I’ll still do it if I can be bothered. As for ideas, I’d like something like… Theme: Ocean, and then we all stick to our trade be it illustration, vector, pixel, “signature-making”, etc. Although some might think that gives one person of one type of art an advantage, I’d say you choose to do it, it’s up to you to be better than the others.

Probably a flawed idea, if not that, then a weekly contest for every one of them! :D Contest spam all around, then you’d want the grouped contest. :P

Yeah, this sounds good! Should the first theme then be ocean? or maybe just something water related?

Topic: The Arts / Artworks Needing Criticism

Thanks :) yeah I appreciate it, and I wasn’t sure what I was aiming for, I was just continuing whatever comes out on paper first. Oh CycloManiacs is one of my favourite games on here, and I do try to draw like the characters are drawn sometimes. Maybe it just happens now a bit by itself.

Hmmm well my ultimate goal would be to be able to produce art similar to Godmachine. Which is fairly different from these pieces, since they have such different types of shading and don’t have half as much of the abstract stuff (like swirls and stuff). That is what I aim for, but I think that at the moment I’m kind of just practicing my own styles.

Thanks :)

Because not everyone likes to stick to(namely myself) just an image with another image on top and effects, which I know is more artistic than it sounds, because you apply all of those rules about making it look good with things like colour, focus point, contrast, etc. But I don’t do that kind of thing, I’m 100% draw my own stuff.

Not the best way to put it, but you know what I mean, I don’t mean to offend either. :P

Ohh actually I was thinking large art competitions, hence the title :p I don’t really like making signatures. But if more people want to then I guess we can. What would everyone like to do?

Hmmm, I guess it depends on everyone else’s opinion as well. Hopefully people can all decide on a suitable time length which fits needs for most people. On an unrelated note, I have just made this website which is specifically made for art battles: http://digitaliaart.forumotion.com/
Hopefully it kick starts, it will need all the support it can get.

Ohh okay. What do you think would be a better length of time? I am now in the holidays, and when school starts I don’t really expect for me to compete much or even at all. Perhaps 3 weeks would be as much as I could do during school term, but I was thinking a shorter time during the holidays. I have only got a few weeks left and I want to make as much use out of them as possible.

SotW was. I only remembered about it when you said it, and there are some good memories. I was thinking a tournament type thing… we could have an even number of competitors, each submit a new piece of art within 4 or 5 days or so, and Kongregators vote which one they think should advance to the next round. What do you think about that?

I’m not sure whether there are enough users of this forum to do that though…

I’m just informing you guys that I’m attempting to produce a forum website, which focuses on art battles. I’ll post it if I think it may be of any use/fun.
