Topic: Kongregate / Nice useless feature Kongregate

Originally posted by Ikamabob:

If you’re doing this stuff in the first place, then you may as well get more for your time and money. To not take advantage of it if it is available is the individual’s fault. If you buy a lot of games, it’s worth it. It you plan on doing the Badge of the Day, also worth it. If you feel it’s a waste of time, that’s all you. I’m not debating Gamestop’s trade-in policy being a rip-off. But that’s business. Hell, the hotel I work at is charging $119 plus tax for a room for one night, when about $40 at maximum occupancy would break even.

You’re arguing that it’s wasting your time to spend money on things you already spend it on, doing something you already do, to get free stuff. Yes, it takes a while. But, like I said, if you’re already doing it, what’s the problem?

If you have to go out of your way just to get something so you can spend time doing something you don’t normally do, possibly even spend money on things you don’t normally spend it on, yeah, that is a waste of time. But the ones who will make the most use of this new feature are the ones who normally buy games and will do the badge of the day. There’s really no need to put the system down just because it doesn’t cater to your convenience. (I think there should be a way to sign up online, to be fair, but, again, not Kongregate’s fault.)

Very well said. To call this feature “useless” is an incredibly foolish argument when you have nothing to back it up, other than you having to go out of your way to get a card if you want to participate.

If you could register online, would it still be “useless”? No. But then again, given your argument, you seem like you’d probably find something else to complain about.

Out of those suggestions, I think Between The Lines is the best.

It’s kind of hard to come up with a name for a game that you know little about, but I second this.

I’m actually wondering the same thing. I could talk about why we’re here for hours, but the other moderators in this thread have done a very good job presenting information. Good work, guys.

Just to throw in my two cents- lt12345, just because you don’t see us doing anything doesn’t mean we’re not needed. I’m sure you don’t see police arresting people in front of your house every night, but they’re still essential to a community. You can question it, but believe me, the site would be in big trouble without moderators.

Topic: Kongregate / About This GameStop Deal.

You guys all have very valid points. However, with GameStop behind them Kongregate has a lot more potential to stop cheaters, don’t you think? I’m sure they can now afford some heftier tech to maybe detect tampering with the game.

Despite that, glitches can still be exploited and users can make countless alts (and by simply using save files have more points than the majority of the users on this site).

I’m interested to see what the staff intends to do about these issues, because with rewards they’d certainly be more prominent.

I agree with this general idea. Once the deal goes through and there are actual rewards to be had from badges and points, I believe there should be a zero tolerance policy with hackers and cheaters. Perma/IP ban from the site, at the very least.

I’ll go ahead and say this: Don’t expect to be getting free stuff from this Gamestop deal in any way. No spending points on Gamestop giftcards, in other words.

With how easy it is to hack Flash games (and make it look legit), they really can’t give tangible rewards (maybe something like a discount on a game if you do something, but nothing free) without leaving the system wide open to exploitation. Here’s how I’m assuming this will work: GameStop will put advertising leading to Kongregate at their stores (like they’ve done with the MMO they “adopted”) and advertising leading to GameStop to Kongregate. If anything, they’ll give some sort of reward (like, maybe a 5% discount on used games or something) for doing something on the site, and since it would be on used games and they keep all of the profits, the amount they would lose from something like that would probably be far less than the amount they would gain from people finding out about the site and buying some Kreds for, say, Remnants of Skystone.

Anyway, that’s just how I think it will work, and I really have not a clue how businesses work.

This is a problem that has been on my mind for some time. The thing is we’ve already been told our points and badges are going to be worth something because of this deal, so I’m wondering what they intend to do about people who cheat the system.

This has been confirmed- to a certain extent. We will be “getting rewarded for the time and energy we put into Kongregate”. Clicky

Not likely. Back when Greg and I were soldiers in Vietnam, a horrible curse was bestowed upon him. Poor Greg- he was just a kid. His curse haunts all of us, and if anyone but him tries to make a challenge or badge, the universe will implode.

He did a good job pretending it was the other staff members, though.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Ouija board real or not?

Ouija boards are fake. It’s all psychological. When you use one, you want something to happen, so your bodies make it so without you knowing, just as Camoraz said. It’s easy to fall for ouija boards because of that, but they do not actually work, hence the fact that they are sold by Hasbro.

It’s called freedom for a reason. If a person wants to have an abortion marathon then I say let them. I do NOT condone abortions, unless the person has been raped or some other terrible situation befell them, but freedom is freedom and nobody has the right to tell another human being what to do with their bodies. I also liked a point that ReverendKen made about all the anti-abortionists going apeshit about women taking lives, but in reality they don’t give a damn about the life is it is born.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Porn, negative or positive?

Porn, in general, is seen as a negative thing. It’s not actually bad for you (most of the time), but it’s too vulgar and taboo to be taken as positive. When it comes down to it, whether or not porn is good or bad depends on the person.

Based on fact, masturbation relieves stress and prevents prostate cancer, while there are no positive effects to NOT masturbating (aside from not being able to get addicted to it, and the bragging rights of not touching yourself). So we can say that masturbation, while not accepted by all, is generally good.

Porn is an aid to masturbation. It is meant to get you aroused and make the masturbation experience more enjoyable. In that sense, it is aiding something that has positive effects, so one could argue it’s good. On the other hand, there are always the “it objectifies women” views and the risk of addiction. There’s also the occasional ignorant fool who believes that since his religion condemns masturbation, it is a sin for all of mankind. In any case, the side of the scale opposing pornography is about the same.

It’s impossible to support or disapprove of porn without being biased in some way. So, essentially, the answer to the question “Porn, negative or positive?” is simply “both”.

Topic: Off-topic / Pay Our Respects

I’m not a very serious guy. It’s rare for me to take anything too seriously without throwing in some humor- unfortunately this is one of those rare occasions.

Michael Jackson has passed away recently. At first I didn’t really care, and then it sunk in the next day. Why am I so bummed? Hell, ask anyone why they’re bummed- chances are most of them don’t even know. For some reason, Michael Jackson, the butt of many jokes, the laughingstock of various people, left a massive impact on us in ways we don’t even realize. Is it the way he was always sort of there? Yeah, probably. But more than that is the way he impacted the world.

Michael Jackson was a great singer from the start. At 14 his career began. Michael brought us Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean, and Thriller. The impact Thriller had on our fucking world is immeasurable. Jesus, Thriller became a key part of our dance culture. The thing about good ol’ MJ is his music was amazing. Michael Jackson was truly gifted. He brought us timeless music. I’m bummed about MJ’s death, so I can’t imagine what it must feel like for those who grew up with him.

Before his death MJ was preparing for a tour. A comeback. 8 hours a day, dancing with dancers and practicing for what might have been the greatest singer’s comeback.

MJ is up there with The Beatles, Prince, and the legends of music. In fact, I myself think he even tops them. When it comes right down to it, I suppose the reason I’m so bummed about Michael Jackson’s passing is that he is gone.

The King of Pop, and you had better fucking believe it, is gone.

Rest in peace, Michael Jackson, now and forever. You will be missed.

I’m not one who’s easily impressed by news articles but that got to me, and actually increased my understanding of the situation out in Iraq. We often don’t care about the civilians because we can’t imagine their lives or what they do, but this article opened up my eyes a bit more.

Glad to see that there’s good people everywhere.

Topic: General Gaming / My Thoughts: RE5 on the PS3

So last night I went to crash at a friend’s house and play Resident Evil 5 all night. I was under the impression that he had an Xbox 360 (my personal favorite console), but to my surprise he had a PS3. This was no big deal, I was still stoked. After all, the controls wouldn’t be too tricky- I’m a PS2 junkie as well. So we popped in the game, and immediately after beginning, I fell in love.

To be brief, Resident Evil 5 starts of by throwing you into the action. The learning curve is perfect, and like in Resident Evil 4, they give you only enough ammo to survive. We played co-op, and the split screen was amazing, even on a small screen. It was a lot of fun to work together to solve puzzles and take down bosses, and being able to resuscitate your dying comrade is a new feature that is more than welcome. I can’t begin to go into detail or I’ll be typing all night, but rest assured, Resident Evil 5 is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played.

That being said, every game has flaws, and RE5 is certainly no exception. The most prominent flaw in the game is the attache cases. The cases cannot be expanded throughout the game, and more often than not you’ll find yourself dropping useful ammo for healing items, and vice versa. In a sense, the small cases add some nice strategy to the game, but they are still a hassle. Add to that the fact that the cases are now real-time (they don’t pause the action) and you get a cumbersome mess when you’re surrounded by enemies. This is due partly because of your limited rearrangement options in the case. In Resident Evil 4, you were able to move your things all around until they were neat- you could fiddle around to your OCD’s content and still have leftover space. In this installment, that’s simply not possible. With a mere 9 spots to work with, you have to scramble to find your weapons. They did alleviate this problem a bit with the D-pad acting as shortcuts to your items, but the attache cases are simply far more trouble than they’re worth.

Another flaw in Resident Evil 5 is the lack of horror. Resident Evil 4 was far more frightening than it’s sequel, mainly due to the atmosphere of the game. Then again, it’s not that RE5 lacks atmosphere- we just found ourselves jumping once or twice in the entire game, and this installment is clearly more action-oriented. It’s not a bad thing, the game was a lot of fun. I just wish I was a little more scared throughout the game.

There are some more minor flaws throughout the game (clunkiness of another player joining in, sucky AI, etc…) but they don’t really need to be touched on. I think I’ve gotten my point across- RE5 is an amazing game that I highly recommend to any action fan.

Before I wrap this up, yesterday evening was my first time touching a PS3. Now this portion may invoke flame wars, so if you’re too immature to know what an opinion is, please don’t read it.

I think the PS3 is sub-par. It’s a big, ugly behemoth of a system, the controllers feel awkward, and the interface is just poor. The game library isn’t very original either. I do give the PS3 props for implementing trophies, however. Trophies are the equivalents to Achievements on the 360. About time the PS3 got with the program and implemented some new features.

Final verdict? RE5- amazing. PS3, not so much.

Topic: General Gaming / WICH IS BETTER MARIO OR SONIC?

Hmmm… that’s a good question. Mario has been destroyed by countless stupid sports games and Mario Party titles, but Sonic’s games for the past few years have sucked royally. I’d have to go with Mario.
