Hi Indie, I don’t mind critism – that’s good and will help me improve the site.

OK, your site may not be mainly flash, but every single link on the homepage is and that’s bad – search engines can’t follow links from flash. At least add a nav bar at the footer with text links to your other pages. I think having your game browser in flash is one of the big problems – with my games listings in HTML with text links, it means Google can spider every game page – 300 or so at the moment, so my site has lots of content as far as Google is concerned.

I can totally understand your point: “being a Flash developer doesn’t preclude me from being a Web designer also” – everything you say relating to that applies to me also.

And Mini, yes Indie’s site looks nice, no doubt, that’ll be the flash bits. It’s not all about the look of the site – how many very simply designed site or even ugly sites are popular? And the reason why is that they can be found! Added to that, my site isn’t exactly ugly.

Thanks for the word of encouragement, Focus.

After having another look at your site, Indie, I can tell you are more a flash developer than a web designer. Your site is mainly made in flash, now that is a really bad idea! You’ll never get any search engine traffic like that for a start. Make your pages in html and use text links, then the search engines will be able to spider your site. I really think you need to re-think your design.

I never said I was already competing with them – I actually said it is early days.

Actually I’ve been in contact with Bubblebox, they sponsored my game Sketch-Pak and swapped some links. Don’t worry, I have plans to put out branded games and I know it’s a lot of work to get a site popular – been there, done that, got the T-shirt. The Bubblebox version of Sketch-Pak is going on my downloads page (I already asked them).

My site was completely made by me, by the way, so I don’t know what you are implying by saying you’ve seen dozens of sites with the same layout. Hopefully you are not saying you think it is an off the shelf script. You see that’s the beauty of it – I can add whatever features I want.

I don’’t think you really looked very deep before posting your reply because you seem to imply that I’m not a games developer myself. The bit “Bubblebox develops their own games like I do, and that is a big traffic draw (I got 12,000 hits a day when POD was in full swing), but without that, you will need something else to bring people in.” implies that I won’t be releasing branded games. I’m well aware of the hits you can get from branded games and it is part of the strategy, but something I’ll do when I’ve got all my features worked out.

Thanks for the words of enouragement, anyway.

lol at the formula altering comment! Mainly I’m trying to settle on exactly what order to sort the games in for different sections. I think I’m almost settled now. I’m gonna do a page explaining exactly how the different sections work when I have it finalised.

Topic: Game Programming / New Games Portal

I don’t want to cross post, but somebody mentioned that this should be in the programming forum.

I don’t necessarily agree with that, but just in case there are any people on the programming forum who never visit the games forum, here’s a link to a thread about my new games portal.

http://www.kongregate.com/forums/3/topics/4572?page=1

If you are a flash games author you can register and upload your games.

This is cool – I like the discussion that’s going on here.

Fair point about Newgrounds and you’re dead right. It is pretty much the top site and to be honest it would be very difficult to get any kind of clear advantage over them.

You’re also right about Kongregate focussing heavily on community aspects, again that would be very difficult to compete against.

One point you have gotten a bit wrong is the way the homepage is filled up. It’s definitely not random!

There is a formula to it – new games in the Under Evaluation section of the homepage are the 5 under evaluation games with the least plays, they move around as people play the games. At the moment you only need a rating of 2 or better after 3 votes to get in to the Newly Promoted section (this is set to change in the future as traffic increases), the games selected for this section are again, not random, but I alter the formula every now and then to spice it up – the idea is that I don’t end up with brand new games in the Best Games section just because the author has given himself a 5 rating – it takes a few votes for the ratings to stablise.

I hear what you are saying about Crazy Monkey, Addicting Games etc. But they are modelled completely differently.

You are talking a lot of sense, Pheonix, but I’m not new to this game!

All interesting stuff here.

Phoenix, I see your point (even though I think you mis-typed and meant it IS aimed at flash devs). However, a games portal is no good without people going there to PLAY the games, so no games portal will ever be squarely aimed at flash devs (hope you see my point).

I think I already have a niche, tbh. Lets analyze the top portals for a moment.

Newgrounds: Undoubtedly very popular, but full of rubbish flash movies made by the community. I don’t accept movie submissions so there’s a difference there. Games are not the main thing on Newgrounds – it makes me work for them.

Kongregate: Again great site. However, how many of you lot have landed your games at the top of the Kongregate homepage? I already know the answer – not a lot. The top of my homepage is full of new stuff that gets juggled around as they get played, so you are guaranteed to get on the homepage, whether it stays there long is another matter – that’s down to the people that play the games.

Hallpass: Again, I like the site. But I can never tell how games move out of the New section and end up on the main site. It just seems a bit strange.

OK, so that covers the main sites that allow you to upload content to.

Most other portals are very selective of what games they add, I’ve even had portals tell me they are not going to add my game and then they add it a few weeks later when it got popular. My service avoids this too and gives the people playing the games the power to get games removed or featured more prominently (OK, Newgrounds and Kongregate both do this) and I also have an up to date feed with another 250 assorted games that people can play and if they score enough then they also go on to the main site (people just love rummaging through stuff looking for the odd gem, don’t they?), so you also get instant access to the latest games as soon as they are released.

So to summerise, my site makes it easy to get to the games in the first place (vs. Newgrounds), it gives developers an equal opportunity to get on to the homepage (vs. Kongregate), it is transparent how games end up on the front page (vs. Hallpass) and you don’t have to wait around for the admin to add your game. What I’ve done is taken what I perceive to be the weaknesses in most other portals and eliminate them.

OK, the card game bit and the badges are a good idea and people obviously care about that, but if I’m going to do something along those lines I’m going to do something different because I don’t just copy stuff.

AntB – you’re right, there is a lot of wated page space. I’m planning on tweaking the layout a little bit today. Sorry about all the warnings!

Thanks for the positive comments, Jude.

Kovec, I’m sorry you feel this is inappropriate. If you were a flash games developer I’m sure you would appreciate having more sites where you can add your games immediately, especially one where your games are pretty much guaranteed to land on the front page, at least for a short while.

The actual subject of the thread was not why it got locked.

And what would be the point in posting it on a blog with hardly any readers?

Hi,

I just thought I’d drop in a quick note because I’ve given my site a new look. The url is http://www.ussgames.com

My last thread got locked, so I deleted it. Hopefully nobody will mind me telling you about the new look to the site!

Topic: Game Programming / Website HELP! (programing)

If you get one good game sponsored you could easily get enough to pay for the full version of flash.

Personally I use Dreamweaver for speed, but it does mess up code and I often end up editing it manually on the code page. I you made every web page in Notepad++ it would take hours to build a simple page that could be done in minutes in Dreamweaver.

Another thing – don’t embed every glyph if you don’t have to. Select letter, number and punctuation for most things and number only for things like your score display. Some fonts can be big with all the glyphs.

If you are having trouble with dynamic text, making sure the font is embedded is usually the answer.

The problem with your button is probably to do with the hit area.

On your button, draw a big rectangle on the “hit” frame which covers the entire area of the button.

The handy thing about that method is you know your sounds will never play until you want them to.

Anyway, thanks for the thanks – you are welcome.

Yeah, that would be clearer.

@Alex, I don’t think over-complicated it is the right phrase here – added in some gibberish, more like – you do know that that second if is never true, don’t you, considering you are checking if a non-existant variable is set to true.

Just search for shared object in the actionscript 2 reference.

If you have ever done Java then you would find the Javadoc invaluable – FlashHelp is pretty similar. It’s amazing how people think us programmers do everything off the top of our heads – I’m always looking in FlashHelp.

Where are you adding the sounds manually?

Make sure the frame you drop the sounds on is before the frame where you have as for attaching sounds. It’s no good dropping the sounds you want to attach on to the very last frame of you game – they won’t be available. Drop them on a frame just after your pre-loader, but before your game and then skip the frame after loading.

The way I do it is to have a movieClip called sound loader. Then in that, make a new layer for each sound, make it 2 keyframes and leave keyframe 1 blank. Add your sounds on to each layer on frame 2. Add a stop() command on frame 1. Drop the soundLoader clip on to your timeline somewhere just after the pre-loader.

The are some errors in your code, surely it should be:

blah.onEnterFrame = function () {

    if (Key.isDown(Key.SPACE) && !keypressed) {
        keypressed = true;
        trace("space is pressed!");
    } else if (!Key.isDown(Key.SPACE)) {
        keypressed = false;
    }
}

Why do I keep seeing this “don’t use scenes” thing everywhere? Newgrounds is bad for it as well.

Scenes are a very handy way of organising your FLA.
