Topic: Serious Discussion / a debate about murder and death

Regardless of whether or not a murderer can be rehabilitated, what is the point of having him killed? Capital punishment actually costs several times more than having an inmate housed for life (due to the service of the public officials involved such as judges, attorneys, court and the many appeals) so that’s no good, there’s also no reason to kill someone simply because they can no longer contribute to society because this cannot be reasonably determined by the law (who’s to say this person can’t contribute more than someone who say watches TV all day and does nothing?). The only reasonable excuse for the use of the punishment is the moral issue (which is futile since the “eye for an eye” concept is uncivilized and idiotic and there are moral reasons for keeping the convict alive that are equally legitimate if not more so) or the depopulation of our prisons (although one man being killed after waiting for years on death row isn’t going to make an impact).

It would have a point if it weren’t for a little something called blind faith.

Really, so now incoherent ramblings are smart? I cannot think of one instance in her ridiculous speeches where she was anywhere NEAR saying something comprehensible.

I think whats scary is that she is indeed stupid but has helped get the far right riled up (along with beck and fox of course) and could potentially win in 2012 because of this momentum. What’s even more scarier than imagining Palin winning is imagining her governing shudders

aphrodite, deism is not at all about a deity and it is exactly what you have said in your older posts: the belief in a god who created the universe and has not intervened with our lives and that his existence can be deduced by looking at the world around us http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/deism

@aphrodite: I get it now, you’re a deist. Of course, everything you’re saying leads towards the bigger question of What is a God? Is a malicious creator really a God? It all depends on your perception of things.

Define what as?

what he views as nihilistic

Do you not know what nihilism is? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism

regardless of the “wikipedia definition” some people might not always be accurate at their interpretations

existential nihilism has a very concrete definition: the belief that life has no meaning. Does this apply to you?

but how do you know the state[if there is one] before consciousness isn’t better? or maybe death is better? my life is a pile of crap, so i don’t value it too much. it’s not bad because of my own doings, mostly things i had no say in

So the question is do you take your chances with suicide.

If it is never given the chance then it can never show it can succeed.

It will never succeed because anarchy would result in either chaos or we would try to reorganize ourselves and recreate a government. How can you maintain order without any form of leadership? Throughout the history of our existence humans have always had leaders. This is simply part of human nature (read Leviathan by Hobbs).

Why does the start of the universe have to have any name is my question?

It doesn’t. But let’s give it a name anyway just so we could reference it during our discussion. It would make our conversations easier. We could name it orange elephant, but it’s too long.

Worship and the afterlife are concepts of religion. Religion is NOT the topic here, so let’s move along…

The aetheist premise is that none of us has seen “God”, therefore he probably does not exists. My premise however is that, since there is creation, then we can probably assume that there is a creator… That since we exists, then someone or something must have started this whole process. It makes more sense to assume that he exists rather than to totally debunk the idea of a “God”.

Which brings us back to the question, why are you an aetheist? If we cannot completely disprove the concept of “God”, then the aetheism belief should just be thrown out the window.

So basically you’re saying that God can exist without religion because of creationism (which is ALSO a religious concept)

Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine
An amazing novel largely autobiographical about Celine’s life about a misanthropist.
