First of all, go to ‘Settings’ on main menu and follow these steps:

Step 1

note: I suggest you to uncheck ‘Disable Animations’ and ‘Disable Textures’ to not look so “ugly”.
Disable Animations = No wiggle and recoil animations
Disable Textures = Disable all textures (walls, obstacles, floor), everything turns white

Step 3
After you join a server or host a game in Multi Player, click on ‘Settings’ and ‘Set Resolution’!
Select the resolution: 640×480

These are my configurations, the only difference is, I uncheck the ‘Disable Textures’.
Don’t forget to close all unnecessary programs and stop downloads, it may helps!
