I curse under my breath, Geological? Such a stupid mistake that made me look like an absolute idiot. This little embarrassing moment was perhaps the only thing to shut me up, if only briefly. We finally had civilization in sight, a small inn, one missing a sign. Peculiar. Babatunde knocks on the door and motions for me to enter first, I was really expecting him to muter some cliche about ladies first but I was pleasantly surprised. As we entered and sat down, Babatunde muttered something in three languages, which was convenient considering I could barely speak one. The waiter asks us how he could help and I was just about to order some sort of food considering it had been quite some time since I’ve eaten and someone suspiciously ate every piece of food on the ship, but Babatunde cuts me off. He did not see my angry glare I gave him after.

After some brief and direct conversing, the man leads us to Babatunde’s contact, which seems to be an overly convenient coincidence considering we happened upon this place upon blind chance. I had decided to mind my tongue for the time being, I’m guessing much to Babatunde’s pleasure, I was getting the feeling that he might not like me as much as I thought. I guess I was in enemy territory, there was no guarantee the German’s would be happy to see me, perhaps my death was something they deemed necessary. As we approached the German’s room, Babatunde announced himself as George and warned of my presence.
“George?” I say with a slight chuckle.

The door opens and there’s the orange German from before, albeit a little more battered and much less charming than before. Babatunde starts conversing with the man and I once again decide to keep quiet as Babatunde constructed a chair out of shadows and urged me to sit, which I silently declined, I had an odd suspicion that he would make the chair disappear, which seems ridiculous. Babatunde began talking about new clothing, custom clothing. As I began to think how odd it was to demand new clothes right off the bat I found the more he talked the more I agreed with him. Dusters would be, for lack of a better word, badass. I began to think about they style of duster I would like and all the possibilities and how great an article of clothing that would be on me when Heart of Glass snaps me out of my thoughts, asking for my abilities and a nickname.

Nicknames were not my forte, especially not when put on the spot.
“Hm, I’ve always been partial to Artemis as a nickname. As for powers…” I snap my fingers and my hand engulfs in flames.
“I’d rather not reveal all my secrets, but if it’s all the same to you, I’m sure you’ll find out in due time.” I say as my flame is extinguished.
“But, I do believe this duster business of ours is of paramount importance to the mission for I believe the clothes make the man.” I look at Babatunde in disapproval. “And it doesn’t seem like we have much of a man here.”

“Glad I have you and your vast geological knowledge by my side.” I say scathingly. He had promised not to kill me, but I think I can break him, he was a very stoic man but eventually my remarks will wear him down. He begins to walk towards a nearby town, no doubt trying to get his bearings, a tavern would be the perfect place. I thought it was a good idea until I realized something and began laughing, my laughing persisted until eventually he turned around to try and figure out what exactly had tickled my funny bone. I composed my self and said through a idiotic looking grin.
“A blind woman and a Negro walk into a bar… It’s going to be hard to get things done when we look like a joke without a punchline.” There was really nothing we could do about it, despite how queer we looked. Unfortunately, I doubt Babatunde would share my appreciation of the humour of our situation.

I was almost thankful that we were in he middle of the ocean, no one could see our awkward handshake ordeal. He was annoyingly insistent on me rowing, me catching his frustrated glance every time I took a short reprieve, which was starting to get on my nerves but at least we were close to shore. I started to row just to shut him up. He suggests a plan, which doesn’t sound like a bad idea at first.
“Did your German friend give you anyway to contact you in case something like the disaster on the ship happened? Or are we assuming he’s dead and we’re on our own? In the meantime, any support from the Germans would certainly not go astray.” As I speak we come upon shore, the boat running aground with a harsh thud.

We both hop out of the boat and I can’t begin to describe how happy I am to be standing on solid ground once again, it will be some time before I ever step foot on a boat. Our situation was not a very positive one, we had no idea absolutely no idea where we are.
“Do you even know what country we’re in?” I ask my unlikely sidekick.

I stare at him for a second, completely confused.
“Threat? No it’s not a th-” I couldn’t even finish my sentence I was so confused, we just stared at each other for a bit, my arm still outstretched. I retract it when I notice how awkward it looks.
“You seriously have no idea what a handshake is? Jesus Christ, do we have a deal or not?” I say with a shred of irritated anger. I made a mental note to not try anything as complex as a handshake with Babatunde again.

I was beyond relieved that even if he was going to kill me, he had the courtesy not to drown me, despite that being the easiest method for him at this time.
“A bit forward don’t you think? I’m sure we both agree that our group of former companions deserve to die but I believe that’s where our similarities end. But I suppose you did save me from drowning which would have been… Undesirable. So I guess I do owe you.” I was almost disgusted with myself that I let myself get into that situation, but a debt is a debt and it was a rather honorable deed to save me from drowning when he had many reasons not to.

I could debate it, but I really had no choice, the debt had to be paid.
“I’ll help you kill our former allies, but after that we’re even, alright?” I hold out my hand to seal our agreement.

My mouth was slightly agape at his brutal honesty and I stopped rowing briefly, much to his annoyance.
“That was the Queen? Huh, never thought the Queen would be such a bleeding cunt.”
I say, expecting a laugh that doesn’t come.
“So you marked me for death?” I say without anger. “Can’t say I blame you, at this point the Germans are starting to look like the good guys. If it makes you feel better you’re no more a dog now than you were before, at least you’re a dog that can see things for what they are.” I continued rowing again, with Babatunde seeming to want to enjoy the silence and me ready to oblige. Until I realize something, an obvious detail that flew over my head. If his job was to kill me and everyone else, his job wasn’t complete.

“So I have to die for you to get your ‘treat’, am I right?” I needed to know where we stood, if my death was necessary I had no doubt he would see me dead. In fact, he could put me in the water at a moments notice, a thought which absolutely terrifies me, and I think he could see that.

I thought this man was certifiably insane when we first me, I thought his crusade was pointless and idiotic, but I’m starting to see some similarities. What was Ms. Applebottom thinking? Sending these psychopaths to save the world? It was a joke. When the African with a insane vendetta against most white people was one of the more sane of the group. Babatunde tells me his true feeling on the group and I’m surprised to find that I couldn’t agree more.
“Yes… they deserve to die. But what about you? I see you talking to a shady man and then all hell breaks loose and he helps tear the boat apart. Who was he?” My voice was shaky, as I was still shivering uncontrollably, my scathing tone was coming back to me, but my voice still sounded weak. He seemed very wary to answer this question.

I didn’t see who it was, but someone wrenched me from the water and helped me onto a boat. I spent a few seconds on my knees just trying to calm my heart. I looked up to my savior, which was actually Babatunde, normally I’d laugh at the irony of this situation but I was far from in the mood. My sardonic and scathing tone was non-existent as I sat on the other end of the boat shivering from fear and cold. He remains silent, and hands me a paddle. I take in my surroundings, it was just pure destruction and death. Bodies of men, women and children were floating face down in the water and the carcass of a majestic cruise ship was burning and sinking around us. Needless, pointless and idiotic destruction, what me and Babatunde pulled in the hotel paled in comparison.

While emotions were hard to gauge with no eyes, I’m sure Babatunde could see my silent rage as I observed the scene. I turned back to Babatunde and thanked him, it was sincere, but I was afraid it came out sounding sarcastic and cruel. I cursed internally at the realization that I now owed this man my life, I start paddling and try to push my near-death experience out of my mind.

The ground grew extremely unsteady and I had to fight to keep my footing. My heart sank and fear gripped me as I fell to the ground, I couldn’t swim. Of course, I didn’t expect this luxury, nearly unsinkable ship to immediately sink, but these mages had a very terrible habit of fucking everything up. The boat started to go vertical and I began sliding but grabbed the railing with such force I nearly dislocated my arm. I don’t remember exactly what happened next, I was stricken by fear but all I remember was falling through the air, screaming before I plunged into the dark, freezing waters. From the water I could see bright lights on the surface and a shockwave hit me in the water, something must have exploded, which in hindsight seems very unnecessary. I resurface and try to scream for help, but I was doing a terrible job of keeping myself afloat and large amount of seawater filled my mouth and I began choking.

Why was nothing simple? Why has today turned into such a goddamn ordeal? The situation had me extremely confused, Babatunde was attacking more of our group and now apparently there was a German terrorist? I was not following these events at all. There was the man in the orange suit, almost as soon as I set my sights on him he disappears, instead replaced by my surprised reflection. Jesus, did I always look this angry? Something catches my eye, something fast. Instincts kick in and I’ve dodged it as it blazes past my neck, aimed for vitals. I look down to see a large, jagged shard of glass. Cheeky bastard, I knew he was up to something, I just really hope Babatunde was not involved, I’m not really feeling round two, my shoulder is still pretty tender.

Great thinking Kania, leave your sword in the room, what could go wrong? Speaking of my sword, that would be very useful at this moment. Another wave of glass was about to rain down but I dive out the way. I get my feet under me and take off in the direction of my room. It was chaos, people were literally trampling each other to get away from some maniac. I seen a little girl frantically trying to get her father to his feet, he had a shard of glass protruding from his throat and was making this disgusting sound as he tried to speak. I see this orange-suited man dead, I swear it.

I reach my room, grab my sword and race back to where the battle was taking place, hoping I wasn’t intercepted on the way.

He was hiding something, perhaps there was a reason he wanted me to go with him? No, I’m just being overly paranoid, if he wanted me dead he would have killed me before, not wait until we’re in public.
“I have a very hard time believing that gunshot wasn’t from one of us, we should check it out.” I say to him. I couldn’t see the man in the orange anymore. Perhaps it was just a man fascinated with seeing a black man on a boat.

“Ah, I see…” I say, obviously not believing him. I had good reason not to trust him and this other character seemed beyond shady. I seen the way they looked at each other when they didn’t know I was watching, they’re up to something. I should really go get my sword. Babatunde was formidable, that’s for sure, I’m not exactly sure I can defeat him if he does have a trick or two up his sleeve without my sword, I had an almost naked, vulnerable feeling without it.

A gunshot went off and I tensed up, but to my surprise Babatunde seemed just as shocked.
“Know anything about that?” I asked accusingly.

I stare at him uncertainly, not knowing what he was trying to pull. He sounded sincere, but I didn’t trust him.
“No hard feelings, sorry about your chest, hope it wasn’t too deep. My name is Kania Thyssen.”
Babatunde could not tell that my stare was aimed past him, at the man in orange he was talking to.
“Who’s your friend?” I say sharply, refusing to beat around the bush.

I once again glanced over Babatunde, the man he was talking with had a large grin on his face. I could sense the man’s power, but there was far too much distance for me to tell anything other than he had some magic. There was something very odd about him and the fact that I had never seen him before really made me weary of his presence. Did Ms. Applebottom send him? Doubtful. This situation is odd. Perhaps I should go over and talk to him? No, our wounds are still fresh and I didn’t have my sword, if he decided to get violent I was at a huge disadvantage.

I scanned my surroundings and seen a woman from our group, the one with them umbrella, her name was Laura. No? Laurie? Lauren! That was it. I walked up to her but she didn’t seem to be paying attention, I nudged her and she looked startled for a second.
“Did you ever see that man in the orange before?” I say to her as I subtly nod my head in his direction.

I get my room number from Ms. Applebottom. Fortunately she hasn’t mentioned the hotel fire, which is an even I’m sure me and the other pyromaniac would not want to explain. I walked to my room but I was still a mess from the hotel with my hair and clothes still wet. I could hear the other passengers.
“Poor thing, do you think she fell in because she’s blind?” followed by a poor attempt by another man to not laugh. I could also see their shocked faces, one man nudged his friend to look at me with a large grin on his face. I turned my head so our “eyes” met and twisted my mouth into a hateful snarl. His grin instantly faded and I could see him instantly become more and more uncomfortable and unnerved.

I make it to my room and undress into dry clothes. I fix my hair to the best of my abilities, it’s still not as good as I’d like it but it’s passable. I begin to exit my room but decide against bringing my sword, I’d really enjoy not having a repeat of the hotel. I check the lock on the door to make sure it’s sufficient and hide my sword behind the door, so it’s not apparent in the off chance someone does break in, when it comes to my sword I was very paranoid.

The air was crisp and relaxing and I was perfectly dressed for the temperature. I looked and seen the black man from earlier talking to a odd looking man with flamboyant looking clothing. Odd, but I decide to ignore them because my dealings with him have not gone as planned in the past. I hear the murmur of the crowd inside abruptly stop. Curious.

My face stayed stoic during her little show, even when she blew smoke in my face. Her insults didn’t phase me, but I think I would kill her at some point just for the disrespect. Another woman approaches us and tells us that Ms. Applebottom is in the lobby and less than pleased. Perfect. As she is talking, we all feel the integrity of the floor start to wane and realize it’s perhaps time to leave.
“Hope you’re pleased with yourself.” I say to the black man before I begin to leave.

As I reached the bottom floor, I seen Ms. Applebottom and “less than pleased” was an understatement.

I grit my teeth in pain as the blade comes out, it was serrated and opened more of a wound than when it entered, I shot a glare at the shapeshifter. Bitch. I do believe Ms. Applebottom will be less than pleased, but she knew the risks when she hired a dozen mages with homicidal tendencies, I also blame my adversary for this entire situation. I glance at the black man, he seemed to be docile for the moment, so perhaps I won’t have to kill him today. I look back to the shapeshifter just as a body falls from the ceiling near her, then, without warning a flood of water comes to douse the flames with the pipes bursting above us to shower us with water.

The black man’s eyes met with my cloth and he seen a mess of a woman. My hair, while simply done as to not look too flash, was now completely ruined and hanging down the front of my face covering my eyes, which did not obstruct my vision one bit. I had the look of a drowned rat and the scowl on my face surely did nothing to improve things.
“I hope you know I hold you entirely responsible for this situation.” I say to him.

The noise I let out was somewhere between a scream and a growl as some sort of bone pierced through my arm. I looked at my adversary and he was also caught by this surprise attack. Electricity was still swimming across my sword, a very powerful charge that I’ve been channeling for some time. I raise my sword to place it against the other woman’s bone, the electricity would be enough to kill both of them if they had no magical defense. Just as I am about to place it I see the African laughing at me. I give him a queer, confused look for I have no idea what could be funny right now, he’s literally been impaled.

I then see the raging inferno behind him, an inferno I tried to prevent but ultimately caused. In our short respite, I only now heard the crackle behind me and as I turned I seen another inferno behind me. I turned back to the African, who seemed to be taunting me. I should be enraged and I should kill him right now, I have the opportunity but I cannot deny the irony. My smirk returns and turns into a full blown laugh, ignoring how ridiculous and insane we both look, I share a laugh with my foe. “Fuck’s sake.” I mutter in almost angry amusement.

All I could do was curse, it had been quite some time since my shield was broken and it was always an unpleasant experience, of course it knocked back my opponent, but the explosion was loud and left my ears ringing for a few seconds. I looked up at my attacker, he was still recovering from the blast. I gritted my teeth in anger, I clutched my sword hard and electricity began dancing around the blade of my sword, charging itself and growing in power.

The man looked up at me and as soon as I seen his eyes lock onto to where mine should be, I let loose a torrent of flames, center mass. I could hear someone cry out in terror in the hallway but I wasn’t focusing on them, I was honing all my senses in making sure another surprise attack didn’t hit me, one more and it could be the end.
