I hear that Arkandian Crusade Chapter II (Revenant) is going to be out very soon. Just a rumour I heard though!

Topic: General Gaming / List of Flash games that are on kong and on Itunes.

It’s a whole new one… Well, a rebuilt and enhanced version anyway. We’ve called it Protector: the Planes since it involves exploring the elemental planes of each unit to earn special powers for them. Each one like a different mini-game that alters the rules. It was only released a few hours ago so I’m sure the reviews will start appearing soon.

Topic: General Gaming / Protector III: Serious Warning for players

Hi pals, thanks for bringing this issue to light StarryDawn. I’ve gone ahead and adjusted the way data is saved with a quick method.
If you already have a save file for the game it’ll use that one, if not it’ll create a new seperate one. In the next update tomorrow I’ll sort out a system to migrate all saved information to a new save file, the only reason for not including it this time is that I had several fixes that I needed to get in as soon as I could and setting that up would cause more delays, if I do something simple and rush it in it’ll require wiping all current data for all current players which isn’t a good thing.
I won’t go into vast detail about why this happened, basically it was to allow for future use of the save file between different games but didn’t quite go as planned.

Hi chums, I just wanted to stop by to fill you in on the plan.
We’ve been putting together a rather hefty balance patch today and will continue on through the weekend to update on Monday. Here’s what will be adjusted.
Several maps are out of whack and need to be made harder, several need to be made easier.
Experience required for leveling will be reduced and the experience earned from maps increase. You’ll also gain experience from losing maps, this will be calculated based on the total waves and which wave you got up to.
Hero salary won’t be taken if you lose map and the way gold earned is calculated will be greatly improved.
Placing a hero within the map will cost less gold, but will increase with each hero added.

There’s a few other adjustments we need to make but I’d rather not go into them yet, though they include things such as some awards being cheesable and the descriptions for others being misleading.
I’ve heard people mention several awards aren’t working, in most cases this is simply misleading descriptors. For example, hiring 20 elemental mages.. You have to beat the map for the mages created to register, but the number on the statistics screen you don’t. We’ll be checking each individually though to ensure they are all working.

Again, I want to say thanks for the awesome feedback, I’ve had a ton of great suggestions.
As a quick note, you can’t earn the award that requires using nothing but heroes right now, that was an oversight due to the map you were supposed to be able to having been re-balanced. (pimgd correctly picked up on that one, you were supposed to have 190 gold so that it seemed impossible until you figured it out and even then required good choice of heroes)

Hi guys, I have to hold my hands up and say yup the release was pretty buggy, we have been under pressure to release this version ASAP but not for anyone’s fault but our own. I hadn’t expected it to be as buggy as it ended up being though, I feel bad that it was and have slapped my testers round the head several times to feel better, the crash issue that seemed to plague everyone somehow got past testing completely and made a bit of a mess. Especially when I was unable to reproduce it, yet everyone seemed to encounter it.
Less than 24 hours later though and we’ve squished most issues. This is why I love the Kongregate playerbase to the point of crediting them all, anyone who’s played a version of Protector before may know I always personally make a point of supporting it for a while after releasing rather than dissapearing for after-crunch time off. While it sucks when one’s found It’s also brilliant to get 100 E-mails loaded with bug reports detailing it, so thanks to anyone who’s sent one in. Keep your eyes open I have a few ideas that’ll improve the game, especially now there’s a map editor out.

If you have some feedback you think would be constructive I always love to go through it, feel free to stop by my profile and leave a whisper, or even a shout if you’re a shouty type of person, I do read them all even if I don’t have time to get back to you. Awards in specific seem to be an issue for people. The original plan was to in fact hide the method of obtaining them all so that it didn’t become a big grind for players to try and achieve them all, some will require a significant grind if you plan to try and get them all, but I figured a guide would come out sooner or later detailing them all, so I might as well just make it more convenient.

I’m of the opinion people are right about experience and gold awarded being a bit low, I’ll be taking a look into that once I’m confident the bugs are dealt with as it’ll take a while to really tweak the balance.
On the subject of grinding, every single map can be completed without any skills or awards. (though a couple were definitely used way too early) Anyone grinding is doing it by their own choice, it’s a game not a chore but I totally understand the instinct to do it.

Topic: Kongregate / Exclusive Content is pretty annoying

As Garin says, this method of sponsorship is very important to developers as it produce both better and more games.
As HypocrisyIsFun alludes to, it’s also a no lose situation. Portals like Armorgames and Kongregate sponsor games because they want traffic. Using this type of arrangement lowers their risk when it comes to paying for that traffic, the developer gets more money in their pocket to fund further games and the player still gets to play the game totally free without having to pay for an advanced or unrestricted version themselves, which was a method of raising the development cost beginning to gather popularity.

I guess you just have to ask yourself, would you rather click a link in a game to play it free on another website, or have to pay out $2-5 for it like you would a mobile phone game?

Generally restricted content is a very small factor, simply an encouragement. Usually by adding an extra feature rather than restricting current ones. If the restriction was too harsh the game itself would suffer as it would simply be a demo. Which is a method used by pay to download games.

Overall what I’m getting at, is that exclusive content agreements are one of the best things to come along for developers, it might be a bit inconvenient for some players, but without it, such high quality content games that have been appearing would have really suffered or never have been made.

Topic: Kongregate / Protector follow-up is out!

Zaraki, I’m glad you feel that way, I have noticed many comments regarding re-using the old maps, my theory was.. It’s the same world, they’re the same maps. From a development perspective, the layouts and paths would have taken a good extra week or so to put together, I diverted that time into the scripting process to provide more challenge and enjoyment, so while it looks like the maps are the same at first glance, they’re vastly different.
I think you might be right in regards to difficulty affecting rating, not that the current rating is bad of course, I’m really pleased with it. It’s a widely held belief that flash games should be easy for maximum popularity, just like it’s a widely held belief flash gamers are all 42 year old housewives. Personally I think a strategy game should involve strategy, which unfortunately can make it unappealing to many people who are looking for quick casual entertainment not a mental exercise.
That’s not what I set out to achieve. Really, you could never call Protector “casual” but I think that’s one of it’s biggest strengths and I get the feeling I’m not alone in this regard. There’s nothing wrong with casual games, I’m a massive fan of games like Filler and Dolphin Olympics for their quick enjoyable gameplay, I just try to provide something different.

Topic: Kongregate / Protector follow-up is out!

I did a small update today that I’m hoping will help with the reported excessive difficulty and at the same time provide a bit more convenience.
I think a lot of the problem is the wave browser being missing when you’re playing, I went under the assumption players would get this ASAP, which was an obvious mistake I think, once you have the information you can plan for it. The new scouting tree benefit should also alleviate difficulty without adjusting balance and tactics.
As I’ve said, good feedback is awesome, so if you have any opinions on these changes, even if you’re telling me something sucks, it can be really useful if you explain why too. I don’t have a big budget QA team to help with this kind of thing and it’s the product of one man’s work, so it’s practically assured there will be issues and imbalances on release, but with a little player help I can easily take care of them.

Some really great feedback in this thread, thanks!
I plan to make a couple of convenience and balance changes over the weekend based on the things bought up.

Topic: General Gaming / For the love of God ... please stop with the defense games ...

All us developers got together and decided to all work on defence games at the same time.
The reality is, it’s a popular genre and no-one knows what other people are developing, it’s just coincidence when several games of the same genre are released in a small timeframe, but surely that’s a positive thing, the more milk you have the easier it is for the cream to rise.
I’m in total agreement in regards to innovation, but if you’re saying people shouldn’t make games of a specific genre you can’t expect to see any.
Where would we be today if Valve said, hey let’s not make Half life, it’s pretty similar to Doom?

Topic: General Gaming / Game Criticism

Like Garin, I think the age old “I’d like to see you do better!” reaction is plain silly. If you bought a chocolate bar and thought it tasted bad, then the producer wouldn’t turn around and say “You make a better chocolate bar, then we’ll talk” – If the reaction had enough volume to it, they’d simply look into possibly producing a chocolate bar you and people like you would prefer.
I’d say the same for time invested too, it’s irrelevant. Master conisours spend hours making hand made luxury chocolates, personally I prefer a mass produced mars bar.
There’s room for both.

There is nothing more valuable to a developer than good feedback in my opinion, critisicm is a good thing. I’d prefer someone telling me what they found best and worst about a game over someone saying “THIS GAME ROXXXXXX 5/5 WOULD PLAY AGAIN”.

Topic: General Gaming / I got J. Greer!

I tend to go through the comments for the game and the shouts people have left me whenever I update, if one appears to be constructive and helps me improve the game in some way then adding their name to the random list is the least I can do. there’s also all sorts of references to all sorts of people from all sorts of places. You’ll never get them all!

Topic: Kongregate / Suggestions

A while back I was quite involved with an IRC server, one of the things we used to do to generate interest and excitment was to host chat sessions with developers of various upcoming and released games.

I haven’t thought it through much and I’m not sure if it would work with the systems in place as moderation would likely be needed, it just struck me yesterday when I went to chat to people playing, a pre-arranged chat with developers of various popular or featured games could be a real draw for new and current players, especially as not only are they involved with the chat if they register an account, they can also be playing the game being discussed at exactly the same time, on the same screen.
I see it as being a benefit to both the developer and Kongregate at the same time.

Topic: General Gaming / Defender?

Never neglect the purple mage!
Electrocution will reduce the target’s defence against all other types of damage by the percentage shown. So picture a fully electrocuted enemy running into a strategically positioned necromancer with full necrosis.
Or, the same again but with a paladin if the map is suited to it, because paladins have consecration it means every hit they make is counted as being the target’s elemental weakness, the damage they dish out can exceed a necromancer, but isn’t as easy to place.
You’d then also be opening up a weakness to flying enemies, so would need to bolster it with an archer or two which is more expensive.

Decisions, decisions!
