Did anyone else thought that the quest was a promotional thing for The Legend of Korra?

Yeah, it’s pretty much flawless.

Topic: Serious Discussion / AX: Engineering Disabilities

Maybe deafness isn’t a disability, but it’s quite possibly a vulnerability. Certainly a deaf person can have a functionally normal life, but lack of hearing should still be seen as undesirable. Let me explain.

First, I will assume that a person that lacks all senses cannot be functional (this seems a fair assumption). Now, we observe that the more senses a person has, the less she relies on a single sense and the less vulnerable she is in case something (an accident, a surgery, you name it) causes her to lose that certain sense.

For simplicity’s sake, let’s consider only vision and hearing, but the argument can be generalized for any sense. Now think: a “normal” person can, through the course of her life, lose her vision, but then she’ll still have her hearing to compensate and be functional. On the other hand, if a deaf person loses her sight, that’s it. She can no longer be functional.

Hence, we conclude that the less senses you have, the more vulnerable you are. Thus, parents ought not to choose their children to be born deaf (if we accept that parents shouldn’t harm their children) lest they end needing their hearing after losing all other senses (yes, small possibility, but definitely non-zero).

Topic: Serious Discussion / God is not real

You CAN prove that something doesn’t exist. For example, it’s easy to prove that no unicorn with two horns exists, because that would be logically impossible (if something has two horns, it cannot possibly be a unicorn). Therefore, if you can prove that all possible definitions of “God” are logically impossible, you have proven that God doesn’t exist.

Good luck with that one!

Topic: Serious Discussion / Division By Zero: Infinity or Nil?

Division by zero is undefined. Period. There’s no sense trying to argue what it could possibly be; in mathematics, the most objective of all areas of knowledge, this is simply not allowed. It’s against the rules. Let’s try an analogy:

Period, commas, colons, semi-colons, etc, are all forms of punctuations. Each has a rule for its usage and a meaning associated with it (a comma represents a short pause, etc). Now, what if you ask what happens if you put various commas together (“Hi,,,,,, my name’s John”). There’s no answer to that. There’s no meaning. In the framework of grammar, you simply can’t put various commas and expect a meaningful result (in the sense that you can’t extract some information from these various commas).

Similarly, the rules of chess tell you what happens if you move a piece in a certain way (you take your opponents piece, for example). But what if you move a piece outside the board? You simply can’t. If you insist in doing it, don’t expect your game of chess to make any sense.

Now, in a physical system, there’re some constraints that can give a meaningful answer to division by zero. What’s the electrical current in a simple circuit containing only a resistor as its resistance drops to zero? It approaches positive infinity. This is answer is only possible because I know resistance is always positive (i.e., I’m using knowledge from physics, not only from mathematics), so it’s only a matter of simple calculus to evaluate the limit. Note though, that’s this not mathematically formal and because resistors can’t have zero resistance exactly, you still can’t divide by zero.

TL;DR version:
You can’t divide by zero. Deal with it.

Topic: MARDEK RPG: Chapter 3 / when does 4 out mardek

Let’s see. You can find Pseudo’s plan with his future games at his site. After MARDEK 3, he is going to work on a Raider revamped (and larger) sequel, then a small project for his site, then two other smaller games, all before starting to work on MARDEK 4.

Now, hopefully he’s more organized this time (<hyperbole>He started about 10 different projects and finished none while working on MARDEK 3</hyperbole>) and he doesn’t have to redo the game’s engine this time, so MARDEK 4 should take considerably less time than MARDEK 3.

Considering all this, we’ll probably only see MARDEK 4 in 2011. Or 2012 if he decides to abandon his original plan and work on other projects instead of MARDEK,

Topic: MARDEK RPG: Chapter 3 / dream circles

I’ll start from the beginning.

Without anyone in your party except for Mardek (use a save crystal to change party), go to Lake Qur and talk to Elwyen. With her in your party, go back to Canonia in the cave in the north and talk to Gloria. With her in your party, go to a new location named “Dreamcave” north of Canonia. Walk into the dream circle. Explore the new area until you find a plot item called Amulet of Oneiros. Presto! Now you can enter any dream circle by simply walking into it!

Topic: MARDEK RPG: Chapter 3 / Rank Characters in terms of effectiveness

MARDEK 3 is different than MARDEK 2 in the sense that versatility is much better than specialization. In MARDEK 2, Vehrn kicked ass because half the game is only zombies. In MARDEK 3? Not so much; you’ll be fighting a mix of monsters of all elements and types, some with high evasion, others with high magic defense, etc.

Thus, Sharla and Donovan are not so good because they focus on only a single element; there’s no variety (the only exception is Sharla at the Earth temple, obviously). Vehrn is also bad, since there’s only two undead dungeons, both quite small (even worse is that Elwyen is sometimes better to kill undead). Zach and Sslen’ck are also out because they focus too much on physical attacks. This is a problem, since there’s ghosts and pixies and fairies and spectres and dream figments and golems and whatnot, which are immune/highly resistant to them.

This leaves us with Legion, which is awesome due to its elemental versatility (it deals fig and thauma damage!). Mereador is also quite good; there’s a lot of options with his inventions (and giving haste to your entire party means you pretty much won). Gloria has access to all four natural elements, healing and Null spells; also excellent. And Elwyen is just simply overpowered.

I’m just no so sure with Solaar. His/her skills are really good, specially his/her healing and Spirit Graft. But he/she is made of glass and dead allies are never useful. With the VIT +6 Stole, he/she becomes really resistant, but until them…

Ok, Sharla’s last active skill is driving me nuts. I’m still missing it, but I think I’ve checked all chests (including the ones from the two secret dungeons), Sharla’s charm from the arena, and all shops. Still, I can’t find her last skill’s source. Help?

No. Depending on the type of game, story is essential — but it cannot save a poor game. Similar to how I wouldn’t play an art game with bad gameplay just because its art’s inspiring, I wouldn’t play a poor game just because its story is great.

Seism can also be defeated with monoaether if you’re reasonably lucky to get enough quanta before some of your pillars are destroyed. Besides that, he will tend to keep playing creatures with no way to overcome shields, so if you managed to play some phase dragons and got the dimensional shields ready, it should be doable.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Cell Phone Radiation.

What exactly could cell phone radiation cause? EM waves can ionize DNA (= cancer), but the cell phone’s microwaves are definitely not energetic enough to do that. Microwaves can also heat things, but the increase in temperature that a cell phone would produce is less than what you would get from sunbathing. What else could microwave radiation from cell phones cause, from a biological and physical point?

So, if there is a God, he is not omnipotent.

I think I’ve argued before that omnipotence does not by definition include everything which is logically impossible. Omnipotence can also mean you’re capable of doing everything which is logically possible, so you’re not capable of making a rock you cannot lift (or basically anything which logically contradicts itself). God can thus be omnipotent while unable to do some things.

I think omnipotent really means capable of all, include logical paradoxes. All-mighty is being capable of doing all that’s logically possible. Not that saying that God’s all-mighty instead of omnipotent changes anything nor does it undermine religion; I’m just pointing out terminology.

I started to play Magic around the time of Invasion. My game group found Ravnica incredibly awesome, but then Time Spiral and Lorwyn were quite disappointing. The final blow was the introduction of planeswalkers and the mythic rarity; we quickly lost interest in the game.
