Topic: Kongregate / Upcoming Badges!

Perhaps a silly question, but is it coming up with names for the badges that’s slowing down their release?

I ask because this seems like an inevitable issue when badges apparently require both unique and ‘punny’ names. Perhaps it might be time to throw in the towel and simply release – more frequently – badges with banal matter-of-fact names? Or would that betray the ‘spirit’ of kongregate?

(I apologise if this has been brought up before. I have not read all 105 pages of this thread.)

Pretty sure Marivel said that this wasn’t likely to be the issue, that the amount of translation that would have had to be done was extremely small.

Sure, but it doesn’t matter how you define it: whether you call the players the customers or the product/audience that is sold to the customers, either way a lack of players leads to a loss of revenue. They have a monetary incentive to gain and retain players.

It depends on how you define ‘customer’, but saying that they’re in it purely out of ‘good will’ is nonsensical. They, like any game developer on here, make money (or at least aim to) via advertising revenue and also, in this case, purchases of their in-game currency. Their income is dependent upon people playing their game, and so in that sense they do ‘owe’ their players: if they do not provide a good product, people will stop playing, and they will no longer make money.

Oh, forgot to mention – I’ve also incorporated hero units HP and Attack values into the stats calculations, to better prioritise heroes with stronger base types.

I’ve added stats calculations to the ‘simple’ mode. It will still search for the best possible synergy first of all, but will then do a secondary sort on total stats. This means that its output results will be pretty similar to results obtained with ‘balanced’ mode, except with synergy being considered more important than stats. There might be a slight performance hit, but ‘simple’ was always a little slower than ‘balanced’ anyway.

Oh boy. Never mind – it’s a symptom of the way that refreshing cached versions of files that are loaded dynamically doesn’t work very intuitively. If anyone else is having this issue, load up and refresh these files manually: synergy_calchotr_funcs

Made a small update today to slightly improve the usability of this thing – and inexplicably it’s broken it (for me) in Firefox, despite working if I load it locally or in Chrome. Some kind of recursion error that makes no sense, given that nothing’s changed on that front. Sigh.

If anyone could check whether it still works for them in Firefox I’d be grateful, as I’m wondering if this is just an issue at my end. For me, if I run it from the website (rather than off my disk) I get a ‘too much recursion’ error that displays as hanging at “0 of NaN: 0% complete”.

I’m pretty sure you don’t even have to go that far back to find people saying that. although I never really understood why it was considered the ‘worst’ room on kongregate, since it was just about not putting up with the kind of dumb nonsense that passed for ‘chat’ in flash game rooms in general.

Alright, I’ll have a think about the box input suggestion. I have noticed myself that the optional list can be pretty hard to use once you’ve got a lot of them.

Thanks for mentioning that error with the min/max of hero types. That’s a really silly bug (caused by comparing values as strings rather than integers) that I’m surprised I didn’t catch. :)

Regarding the last suggestion: making a spreadsheet style GUI thing for this calc is a bit beyond me, I think, BUT importing, like, a CSV list of all your heroes from a file that you select might well be feasible. That might make it a little easier to say ‘just use whatever other heroes I have’. Although at that point doing something like what Estava’s calc does and having ‘generic <zodiac>’ heroes might be sensible too. Hmm.

Overhauled a bunch of core code, which means that ‘balanced’ mode now prunes based on stats rather than synergy. Long story short, balanced mode should be more reliable at finding the best stat-results now. Pretty sure this change has made ‘thorough’ mode completely redundant, but leaving it in for now.

Fixed a major bug in the unit type limiting, which was resulting in some weird output, and refactored a whole bunch of core code that should have sped up calculation a little.

Small update.

Added an error log that lets you know if it fails to find the heroes or collections you’ve typed, and other such issues.

Also added a ‘fill to 10’ checkbox that eliminates the need to specify how many optional heroes to use: it will automatically use as many as required to fill 10 slots.

Updated: now has persistent state – the various input fields will (should) remember your last settings. (Uses HTML5 local storage but seems to require cookies being enabled.)

Also added a ‘max requisition’ input field, for use with the colosseum or whatever.
