Ah, hmm. Not quite resolved all issues – ‘ari’ as input currently matches t4 prepared aris, when I suspect the ‘best’ default match should be t3 tamer ari. Will investigate.

Edit: fixed: ‘ari’ matches t3 tamer ari. I think most text input should match the expected hero now.

Double edit: except that ‘kloea’ on its own matches happy kloea, which I imagine nobody would intend. Still… I think that is probably an acceptable trade-off for things like ‘duora’ and ‘hasmusto’ producing their t3 versions.

Updated just now. The hero text matching now prioritises closer matches and higher tiers, which should resolve all of the issues I’m aware of. Of course it’s still possible to specify lower-tier identically-named heroes with the usual methods.

I’ve also tweaked the duplicate detection to allow the kind of situation nyunyu brought up: duplicates in the optional heroes list are now allowed, but should not both appear in any one army output. Let me know if there are any issues.

(… Slightly unfortunately I’ve just realised that that last change means that you could, say, write “t3 evan” hundreds of times in the optional list and it will be accepted, resulting in a massive slowdown of the actual calculation. I might fix this later, or otherwise just assume that you guys wouldn’t do something that silly.)

I’ll start working on making the text matching less dumb. Should be relatively simple to just have it prefer fully-matched short names.

The ‘duplicate entry’ issue is slightly tricky. I added that check because identical character_sidx heroes can’t both be added to an army simultaneously (right?), but obviously if they’re both optional then it should be possible to just include one or the other. I’ll look into tweaking it.

So I got a bug report the other day that, long story short, turned out to be due to the calculator thinking that ‘rai’ was referring to ‘training yana’. I’d like to get some feedback – does this kind of thing happen often, for anyone still using my tool; do you wind up with text input not producing the intended hero match? My current thoughts are that the best solution would be to just make the text matching a little more sophisticated (perhaps simply that it would ‘prefer’ matches that include the entirety of the name text), but if this is a widespread issue I’d be open to other ideas.

I also have some other little things that have occurred to me that I’d like to see if there’s any interest in.

1 – Saving/loading hero lists. This would be done in local storage, so you wouldn’t be able to share/publish them easily, but it might make trying new ideas a little simpler.

2 – Some kind of URL interpretation, so you could share links to calc setups.

3 – Real-time reporting of the ‘best found so far’ result, so you can see some kind of progress instead of just staring at a percentage slowly increasing.

I’m not really active in the game any more, but if this stuff is still useful to people I’m still willing to work on it a little.

Perhaps a silly question, but is it coming up with names for the badges that’s slowing down their release?

I ask because this seems like an inevitable issue when badges apparently require both unique and ‘punny’ names. Perhaps it might be time to throw in the towel and simply release – more frequently – badges with banal matter-of-fact names? Or would that betray the ‘spirit’ of kongregate?

(I apologise if this has been brought up before. I have not read all 105 pages of this thread.)

Sure, but it doesn’t matter how you define it: whether you call the players the customers or the product/audience that is sold to the customers, either way a lack of players leads to a loss of revenue. They have a monetary incentive to gain and retain players.

It depends on how you define ‘customer’, but saying that they’re in it purely out of ‘good will’ is nonsensical. They, like any game developer on here, make money (or at least aim to) via advertising revenue and also, in this case, purchases of their in-game currency. Their income is dependent upon people playing their game, and so in that sense they do ‘owe’ their players: if they do not provide a good product, people will stop playing, and they will no longer make money.

Oh, forgot to mention – I’ve also incorporated hero units HP and Attack values into the stats calculations, to better prioritise heroes with stronger base types.

I’ve added stats calculations to the ‘simple’ mode. It will still search for the best possible synergy first of all, but will then do a secondary sort on total stats. This means that its output results will be pretty similar to results obtained with ‘balanced’ mode, except with synergy being considered more important than stats. There might be a slight performance hit, but ‘simple’ was always a little slower than ‘balanced’ anyway.

Made a small update today to slightly improve the usability of this thing – and inexplicably it’s broken it (for me) in Firefox, despite working if I load it locally or in Chrome. Some kind of recursion error that makes no sense, given that nothing’s changed on that front. Sigh.

If anyone could check whether it still works for them in Firefox I’d be grateful, as I’m wondering if this is just an issue at my end. For me, if I run it from the website (rather than off my disk) I get a ‘too much recursion’ error that displays as hanging at “0 of NaN: 0% complete”.
