Topic: Kongregate APIs / HTML5 Games

I would be interested in hearing more about Kong’s HTML5 plans as well. I have written a couple of Flash games, but would prefer to do my next games in HTML5 both for the easier (relatively) coding platform and compatibility down the line with Mobile. Would adding the Javascript API to an HTML5 game be sufficient? Would I then upload… where?

Thanks for your time.

Topic: Kongregate Labs / Changing My Game to Non-exclusive

Have made some changes to my game (new sounds, can turn sounds off, etc), and want to distribute the new version to more than just Kong. I would like to “fix” my game on here to no longer be “exclusive”, but darned if I can figure out how to. My profile doesn’t show the “Manage Games” link that the FAQ suggests. If I go to edit the game, it doesn’t give me an option for selecting exclusive or not.

Help…

Topic: Kongregate Labs / AS3 SharedObject Problem

It’s actually “undefined” according to the trace, which is why I looked online for examples. Half of them look like what I have above, and half show you trying to pull one of your data fields and checking it’s value. I’ve tried all of these ways, and haven’t found anything that works. I suspect it’s something subtle, but darned if I know what…

Topic: Kongregate Labs / AS3 SharedObject Problem

Following code is where I am trying to check for whether the player has saved a game to this “slot” or not. For some reason even though I haven’t saved a game to this slot, it’s still running as if I had (i.e. it’s performing the else). LoadErr is a Text Box on the screen where this code is. What am I doing wrong?

var mySharedObject:SharedObject=SharedObject.getLocal(“saveGame01”);
if (mySharedObject.size==0) {
this.LoadErr.visible = true;
this.LoadErr.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, P5tryagain);
} else {
loadCR(mySharedObject); }

Topic: Game Programming / MochiAds pre-loader help

Billow – So if you don’t use Mochi, what do you use? Or do you just put on here?

JayJam – Version Control and Encryption is an option Mochi gives that allows you to change your game later, and have the changes propogate to anyone hosting it, and also to encrypt the source. I’ve heard mixed reviews about how much you need this, and it seems that it’s rather brittle in terms of how it works.

Since you’re using straight AS2, are you making sure to include the “import Mochi.*” in your FLA?

Are you using AS2 or AS3? Preloader only or the version that uses Version Control and Encryption? For that matter, have you considered asking on the Mochi site itself?

Topic: Game Programming / Is Encryption worth the trouble?

One of Mochi’s selling points is their Version Control and Encryption wrapper for games. But I see a fair bit of folks having issues with that, and so am wondering if it’s really worth the trouble? Is encryption a solution for a real problem – are there that many folks decompiling SWF files?

Excellent point and suggestion. Pardon me while I facepalm for not thinking of this :-)

Thanks!

Topic: Kongregate Labs / Asking the user to enter their name example?

That assumes the user want to use their profile name, if I’m reading things correctly. I wouldn’t want to presume that’s always the case. Still, that is an option if I can’t figure out anything else.

Topic: Game Programming / Globally turning off music - AS3

OK, I’m setting up my music as:
var tanrui:Sound = new Tanto_Ruido();

Then I play it like:
var channel:SoundChannel;
channel = tanrui.play();

And I stop it using:
channel.stop();

Which I do throughout the game (switching between different pieces at different levels). I’ve noticed that folks like the ability to turn off the music, and I’d like to add that. However, it seems like I’d have to add an If in front of every play to do that. Is there a way to setup the global player so that music is disabled? Or at least is there a sound or channel property that I can set to disabled?

TIA!

Topic: Kongregate Labs / Asking the user to enter their name example?

OK, I’m obviously searching using the wrong terms. I get to a screen on the game I’m coding where I want the user to enter their name so I can address them by name from that point onward. So I presume I setup a Dynamic Text field. But I’m not exactly clear how I change the focus to that field or how to pull in the contents into a string I can use from that point onward. I presume I should also check to see if they actually entered a name, but if they don’t would it be better to prompt them to do so again, or to just assign a default name?

TIA!

Topic: Game Programming / Can the Kong API be used to do Game Saves?

Probably because “I R Newbie” and wasn’t aware of the use of Shared Objects… hence my second question which you answered by sending me to the correct place :-)

Thanks!

Topic: Game Programming / Can the Kong API be used to do Game Saves?

Conceptually, I could give each user six stats that represent six game “slots” for saving their current status (a long string that has the numerical value of important variable values and current frame of the game). Is that considered ok, or would that be “abusing” the API?

Related question if it is ok to do this – is this a good idea, or is there a better way to do this?

Umm… maybe it isn’t possible to do a fade in or fade out of music using AS3? Or is there some function I’m just not finding in the documentation?

Topic: Game Programming / Programing tower defence games

If you’re looking for a truly basic tutorial on this:
http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2007/10/06/make-a-flash-game-like-flash-element-tower-defense-part-1/

There’s also a part 2 on there which is linked from part 1.

Take the tutorial as inspiration, not gospel. The tower shoots almost 100% accurate to the left, but can’t shoot the broad side of a barn to the right. I suspect his equation isn’t properly tuned.

Topic: Game Programming / Using Sounds in AS3

Anyone know of a simple way in AS3 to fade in or fade out some background music? It sounds a little off if I’m looping a background song, and then I suddenly cut off and begin something else…

Topic: Kongregate / Suggestions

OK, I’ve read several pages but not all of them, so if this has already been addressed…

1 – Watching threads is OK, but I prefer the “subscribe” model where I can go to my User CP and see which threads I’ve added, and if they have any recent posts. That’s easier to use, IMHO.

2 – Option to get an email sent to your registered email account when a thread you are subscribed to gets updated. Not an email for each additional message, just to let you know the thread has been updated so you can follow the link to the “New” messages on the thread.

Topic: Kongregate Labs / Kong API question.

Can the score/stats API be used to save someone’s place in the game? Or is there a better way to do that?

For example, on the new game I’m working on I’d want to store what level they were on, and the values of a couple of variables. Is it ok to do that using the API, or is that frowned upon?

Topic: Kongregate Labs / Points for Upload

The Kong FAQ seems to indicate that you normally get 25 points for uploading a game. Am I the only one who hasn’t gotten points for uploading as part of the contest, or are contest entries excluded from this?

Just trying to get rid of that Newbie identifier (Level 1) :-)

Topic: Game Programming / c++ programmers

Over 20 years of experience I have coded in Fortran, Cobol, C, C++, Java, PL/SQL, Python, and now am getting into Flash/AS3.

The reality is that the “best” language is always the one the client is willing to pay you to use :-)

Personally, I’m seeing a lot more call these days for Flex folks, and so see more than a little future in Flash/Flex/AS3. Given the move to cloud computing and browser based work with netbook clients, I suspect that Flash has a brighter long term future than the more traditional languages. Certainly it’s easier to make money with a flash game than a C++ or Java one (and I have experience with both – heck I have one of the most DL’d Android Phone games and it’s making me diddly).

Topic: Game Programming / Question on screens and placement of objects

One more question (assume it’s better to do these all in one thread rather than have a mess o threads), for my sample “teach myself how to make this work”, I have an FLA with a “Splash” Movie Clip in Frame 1, a “Menu” Movie Clip in Frame 2, and a “OpeningBack” Movie Clip in Frame 3. I have also created a Movie Clip called “NewGame” that is a box that I’ve put on top of the New Game option on the “Menu” Movie Clip in Frame 2. But I keep getting compiler errors when I try to setup the EventListener for Newgame (stage works ok where I use that). Below is my code. Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong would be appreciated (and here I thought 20 years of experience coding in C and C++ would make this easy…):

EDIT; OK, the problem was with scope. Trying to follow the tutorial example is a “bad” thing if you’re going to use multiple frames since the movieclips on the other frames aren’t available (or it may have been a casting issue). In any event, once I started putting code for each frame in each frame, I had no problems. Now on to figuring out how to do my music…

Topic: Game Programming / Question on screens and placement of objects

Ashera suggested using empty movie clips on stage, and then load the images into the holders based on where folks are. I like the idea, but I’d really like to see an example of that. I saw the Backgrounds example in the AS3 version of the tutorial, but that seemed to require that each possible picture be associated with the background ahead of time. I have 40 character images, and each of them can be left screen, center, or right. That seems like a “lot” of subbing…

Thanks again!

Topic: Kongregate Labs / Converting Multiple Files to Movie Clips

Well, my FLA is now 36 megs having just imported all the PNGs into the library. Would converting them to Movie Clips make it easier for them to be compressed/optomized? I’m a little concerned about the final game size if I’m at that size with just the graphics (backgrounds and character sprites). Add in the background music (tied to the characters), and I’m thinking I have a game that won’t go on Kong.

For my next game, I have a fairly large number of PNG images, and I’d like to batch convert them into Movie Clips. Is there a way to do that?
