Topic: Forum Games: Forum Games / BOLD - Round 3: Short Stories

Game Name: Cardinal Revenge

Short, one-sentence description: “An action game where you hunt scientists and you are also a bird”.

Platform: Flash

Genre: Action/Survival

Story: A group of scientists have combed the dense woods of eastern Texas for months on end searching for the elusive mythical chupacabra. While the hapless scientists have yet to find any success on their quest, their constant traveling through the woods have made the native birds pretty angry. As a result, the cardinals (being at the top of the local pecking order) have decided to take action against the constant disruptions to their native habitat. They don’t just want to annoy the scientists, however; simple tit-for-tat revenge tactics are for the birds. On the contrary, these cardinals are out for blood—so keep an eagle eye peeled.

Objective: Score as many points as you can by hunting down scientists and dodging trees for as long as you can before you eventually crash into one and meet your untimely death.

Gameplay: You play as one of the suddenly fearsome fiery red cardinals in this top-down 2D scroller. Scientists will appear in the woods, feebly attempting to flee from the wrath you will soon impose on them. While you can easily take them down by hitting them with a few pellets fired from your mouth, beware the trees—they’re tall and thick, and if you happen to run into one of them, it’ll be your swan song. Each scientist you kill gives you 100 points, and you (initially) earn 1 point for each tenth of a second you survive. Along the way, you will randomly find several different types of powerups that will help you out:

Aerial Ace: For 5 seconds, your pellets gain a special homing ability, ensuring that they’ll never miss your target.
Rapidfire: For 10 seconds, you can fire pellets twice as quickly as normal.
Two in the Bush: For 15 seconds, a second cardinal flies beside you to assist you in your scientist killing spree.
Brave Bird: For 20 seconds, you gain the ability to make sudden brief bursts of movement by pressing the spacebar. While it can allow you to get out of a tight situation, the lack of precision could prove fatal.
Bird Brain: For 25 seconds, more of the baffled scientists appear, giving you an opportunity to exact even more revenge and rack up some serious points in the process.
Pointy Beak: Each time you pick up this powerup, you gain an additional point per tenth of a second survived.

Note: Multiple powerups can be active at the same time, and their effects will combine with each other.

Controls: Left and right arrow keys (or A and D) to move the bird. Click to fire pellets from your mouth (press F to toggle autofire). Fly into any of the previously described powerups to pick them up.

Ending: As a survival-type game, there isn’t much of an ending except the one caused by your death. As there is a near-endless supply of cardinals in the jungle (and an equally endless supply of oblivious scientists), you’re the only one who determines when you’re really done playing this game. (Maybe after the fifteenth time in a row you’ve crashed into the same tree…)

Replay Value: A perfect tournament game! The replay value comes from trying to beat your personal best score. And who can’t get enough of pummeling hopelessly clueless nerdy scientists into oblivion. (Well, other than Homerun in Berzerk Land.)

If anyone’s curious to play around with another game generator, here is one that’s on Kong.

And to make this post semi-related to the thread, I vote A for round 3, if it’s not too late to vote.

Here would be my definitions for the terms above, feel free to improve on them:

EBWOP: Stands for “Edit by Way of Post”. Since editing or deleting posts is strictly forbidden in Mafia games, an EBWOP is used if a player wants to add to or clarify their previous post when it is the last post in a thread.

Bastard: Used to indicate to the players of a Mafia game that nontraditional modding/roles/game procedures may be present in the game. If a game will have (or could have) bastard elements, this fact should always be revealed to the players before the game begins.

Topic: Forum Games: Forum Games / BOLD - Round 3: Short Stories

As another dawn breaks over the harsh, unforgiving land, I take a few moments to take in my surroundings and ponder the challenges that still lay ahead of me on my journey. I see first a gently flowing stream directly in front of me, its water cool and fresh after the long night. I then see the golden grass shining brightly in the early morning sun, calmly swaying back and forth from the light breeze. But I am unmoved by the feelings of gentleness and calmness that should be relaxing my troubled spirit. Instead, one emotion stands out above all others: fear. A fear that no temporary feeling of happiness or kindness can overcome.

My gaze fixes upon the source of my all-encompassing fear. A towering mountain rising up before me—a single obstacle, daunting in its own right, yet undoubtedly masking further obstacles beyond it.

Do I run away from this imposing challenge? Do I bravely attempt to push forward and conquer this scary obstacle? Do I just continue to stand here and do nothing, paralyzed by fear and indecisiveness?

I take a tentative look back over my shoulder, seriously contemplating the idea of retreating and giving in to my increasing apprehensiveness. As I do so, however, I see all the mountains and obstacles of my past. Once they were challenges as fearsome (or more so) than the one currently before me, but now they are triumphs, reminders of the times in my life where I conquered tough tasks despite my own self-doubts.

I take a few cautious steps forward and I enter the knee-deep water of the stream. As I wade forward, I make the bold decision to embrace the fear I feel and use its energy for strength instead of letting it continue to consume me and fuel my paranoia.

Onward I must go…

Blanket statement to everyone: Please don’t play games like this if you’re not trying to win. Yeah, it’s fine to play most types of games just for fun, not taking them too seriously. In Flash competitions, trivia games, puzzle games, continuous games, and the like, your fun doesn’t have an effect on anyone else. But here, if you’re not playing the game seriously, it impairs everyone else’s ability to play it as well. I couldn’t have made any big moves in this game even if I had the time to plan any because there weren’t enough other players who cared enough to want to make a move with me. There’s a reason quitters are some of the most loathed players in (television) Survivor history. When you quit (or when you want to vote yourself out for whatever reason), you not only take yourself out, but you hurt everyone who trusted you, as well as everyone who could have used you to make a move in the game.

Props to Bluji for another great game and having the determination to stick with it to its completion despite quite obviously not wanting to at points. However, I don’t want people to think that this is what Survivor is all about and use this game to determine whether or not they want to join future games—because this isn’t what it’s all about. This wasn’t Survivor; this was a long, drawn-out coronation parade for BestMte and his alliance. Best would have won unanimously had he decided to stay in, and SilentSand would have won unanimously had I not voted for hamuka because I felt no one deserved a unanimous win in this game.

Well well well. A wild zombie approaches.

Before I get to the questions and everything, I did just want to take a moment to clarify some things here about the game.

1) Yes, Wii did volunteer to get sent to RI. Knowing he had an idol, I did have the notion that his move was just a ploy to draw all the votes to him so that he could vote out the player of his choosing, but as he explained to me later, that plan would have been game suicide.

2) Yes, I did have an idol, it was my hidden box reward from the auction. I didn’t play it because I never really had a reason to—even if I had bothered to play it on the TC where I was voted out, the game was already so far gone at that point that I would just have been delaying the inevitable. (And as I’ve said about 643523486 times, I didn’t really have the time for an exercise in futility anymore.)

3) Yes, my game was pretty much doomed from the beginning because I couldn’t talk with anybody during the first week of the game.

…Enough about me, this is about the three finalists.

@hamuka: Just getting to the final 3 is an accomplishment in itself. Don’t be ashamed at that. A lot of really good players didn’t get there, so you really accomplished something by doing that.

I do have a couple of (related-ish) questions for you:
1) Do you consider being “100% loyal to the alliance” a good thing? If so, why?
2) Is there ever a situation where you would consider betraying your alliance to advance further in the game?

@darkboy: My time constraints are well-documented, but I at least tried to put forth some sort of effort for everything that I could. I sent in words for that one immunity challenge even if it was after midnight, I sent people my opinions on that bot challenge even though I could only be on at times when no one else on my tribe was, I did what I could on the Wikipedia link challenge even though it proved to not be very helpful. But I didn’t throw up my hands and say “I won’t be able to participate”. This is literally the most important part of the game, and you say you won’t be able to participate? Are you kidding me?!

I don’t even have a question for you—I know everything that I need to know already.

@SilentSand: The closest thing I had to an ally among the players still remaining (and basically my closest thing to an ally among all of original Ytivitca). He was the only one who even attempted to keep open the door of communication, though I never quite trusted that he was completely honest about what he was proposing.

My biggest question for you is this:

How serious were you about wanting to use me to get rid of Best? I knew that Best and his minions valued loyalty above everything else, so I took your attempts to get me to vote out Best as you wanting to show everyone else in the tribe that I wasn’t willing to be loyal to the tribe, and that I should be voted out next. (Don’t get me wrong, the entire game I wanted to vote Best out more than any other player. But I could never do that because then I’d be voted out of the game faster than you could say “TwistedCakez” due to my disloyalty.) Basically, was everything you were telling me truthful (and I was just paranoid about it), or did you lie to me at some point?

This game made it quite obvious that I can no longer put forth the time and effort to play a forum game properly.

So I guess this is it, then.

How many players, or how many active players?

Because I’m sure you can get 20 people to sign up, but good luck having even half of those be active.

It’s a moot point, because there won’t be a 420th Kongpanion.

If the current earn rate trend continues (yeah I know it won’t, but still), the 124th Kongpanion will be earned by no one.

Fun fact: Before yesterday, the last time a Kong users online record was set on a day other than Saturday or Sunday was on Monday, June 20, 2011.

(Yes, I keep track of the weirdest stuff)

Might at least be a contributing factor.

Sorry. Um, I haven’t had any desire to so much as play any tourney games over the past 4-5 days or so and I don’t really have any desire to do so now. I know Best urged us to play it out to the end even if we had no chance of winning and normally I’d be all for that, but I’m just not feeling it for whatever reason. I know I’ve said I’m quitting tournaments at least half a dozen times by now, but this time I really might mean it. I don’t know, I’ve never felt like this before. I think I might have actually found some outlet for my competitive spirit other than Kong, though.

I actually did take a screenshot, but I didn’t post it because back in 2011 or whatever, the admins were able to look at internal statistics and see the record for users online (which would often be a number higher than the highest number shown on the site, as that doesn’t always update instantly).

That’s the highest I got, I did see at least one claim of 70706 from someone else in chat. Definitely was higher than 70007 for at least 75 minutes though.

No, I don’t want any title.

(You’ll probably insist on moving me to “Inactive Regulars”, but that’s basically the same problem.)

I no longer agree with the concept of FG regulars, therefore I would request that my status as an active regular be removed.

I’ll still be around as much (or as little, I should probably say) as I have been over the last year or so, I just don’t want to have a title that I don’t agree with.
