Obviously I’m not going to do this in real life because I’m not a psychopath. Rescuing kittens from trees and shopping at grocery stores for milk don’t exactly sound like exciting video game plots.

Mad props to Waffle for the most honest comment in this thread.

Fron,
GTA is the best selling game of 2013. What are the factors at play here?
Production values? Advertising? History? Gameplay?
The fact that you can pay hooker for sex and then leave her for dead in an ally?
All of the above?

What?

Why do we we feel the need to justify and make noble things that we know are just wrong?

I’m saying GTA has some of the highest production values on the market.

Why isn’t the game industry making games that are equally in depth and expansive featuring a protagonist that is not a criminal?

Because games like Fable and KOTOR don’t exist. And if you want to get into gigantic open games that had tons of content and a strictly good protagonist, we can look at Paper Mario 1 and 2 along with Mario Sunshine which both did extremely well.

Do you think the games you mentioned are of the same quality as Grand Theft Auto?

By the end of the game, you realize that’s not the way he wants to live, he doesn’t want to live a life of crime, he just wants to solve his cousin’s issues.

I’m amazed by GTA IV. The satire is laugh out loud funny and meaningful, particularly the the TV and radio highlights. Production values are top notch, but long story short, the best games put you in the role of a bad guy.

It’s damn hard outrunning loansharks that are trying to gun you down without running over pedestrians that are practically jumping in front of your car.

Is that what the public really wants, or is it being thrust upon us?
Would a game providing the option to buy a burger from the waitress as well as the option of shooting her the face sell just as well?

…I don’t know if this helps, but it wasn’t my intention to offend anyone or attack this game. It’s a great game. The question is why isn’t the same time and effort being put into making great games where the character isn’t a criminal?

Morgan,
I am playing the game, I detest FOX news as well as most commercial news sources, and I have no idea why you’re hellbent on trying to give me a hard time.

In GTA you do play a scumbag, that’s the point.
I’m just suggesting that the format would lend itselt to other styles of story telling and gameplay as well. You can’t even walk into a diner and order a burger. You can however kill the waitress.

Few games offer as much versatilty as the GTA series. You can pretty much go anywhere and do anything, though there are a few frustrating exceptions. You can only interact with the world with a gun or your fists.

Why don’t they make creative open world games where the main character isn’t a complete scumbag?

If the answer is, ‘because they won’t sell’ why don’t we buy creative open world games where the character isn’t a complete scumbag?

Are we stuck in a vicious circle of misguided merchandising or do most people really want to live out a fantasy of carjacking and killing innocent people while living a life of crime?

Have you ever experienced cosmic coincidences?
What do you think they are?

General examples:

  • Having a subject or theme randomly pop up all day.
  • Unrelated events seem connected in some way.
  • Deja Vu

Specific examples:

  • Hearing a word from the television just as you are writing it.
  • Thinking about an old friend and then bumping into them.
  • Knowing your way around a place you have never been.

Implying that this is new.

I’m referring to a free product for the average user.
Linux has long been the exclusive domain of programmers and the tech savvy, but it’s becoming more user friendly.

Originally posted by ImplosionOfDoom:

“Decent” is ok, there doesn’t need to be any sort of minimum requirement to be ‘decent’, you just have to have it relatively decent compared to other things (in other words, it would be considered at least ‘average’ compared to it’s competitors)

If the restaurant was ‘good enough’ to pass a health inspection then the food won’t give you food poisoning (although that’s no guarantee of whether or not it’ll taste any good). If the restaurant is ‘decent’ then the food will also taste ok.

Well put, context is everything.

Both ‘decent’ and ‘good enough’ have to do with where the bar is set.
Decent is a general condition. Good enough implies a specific requirement.

Food good enough for dogs might not be decent for human consumption,
but not all decent food is good enough for a five star chef.

Mikkmar,
You can do some basic photo editing right online, and many of the programs you mentioned can be downloaded for free.

In fact, you can even get a free operating system these days.
If you pay $100.00 for a computer, buy no software for it, and only use it to surf the web, the software value of your computer is practically ZERO.

What’s there not to get?

Mikkmar,
I may have overgeneralized when I said ‘people don’t store stuff of value on their hard drives anymore’.

I’m just saying that computers are primarily becoming tools used to
access online content rather than to store content.

It depends a lot on what you use your computer for.

People really don’t store stuff of value on their hard drives anymore,
even family photos and stuff like that is usually stored on a cloud network.

are you really this retarded

Look, you’re talking about the value of software and it’s physical location. I’m just saying that the software we buy and own doesn’t always live on a disk or in your computer anymore.

If you pay 20 bucks for movie and save it on a cloud, it’s not ‘in’ your computer.
All your registered programs and drivers are downloadable and exist on the net.

You know that, I guess that makes you retarded too.

Topic: Off-topic / 300 reasons America is the best country on Earth

I don’t understand why Southerners have a monopoly on the American image. These are the same people who wanted to succeed, causing the Civil War. What a strange irony that the people considered to be the most patriotic hypocritically hate the values the United States are really based on: Education, social equality, and personal liberty.

Topic: Off-topic / New Tech: Buy now, later, or never?

I usually wait for the prices and hype to go down, but I understand how it can be important to a player to get in on the ground floor of a multiplayer game.

I was a total sucker for The Walking Dead games, getting each episode right when it came out only to have them go on sale a few months later. Fun though, and I wanted to see what happened next.

I usually wait a long time on new consoles, and I’ve never had any interest in getting an iphone.
