Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Dungeon Overlord] Girls of the Dungeon

Kong seems to attract the worst of folk, the least mature. I don’t recall much harassment going on when I played Evony, and it seemed at the minimum 40% were female.
As for gaming in general, if you discount EA (a pisspoor company that dominates), women tend to hold a fairly large section of the jobs, many even being the team leaders. I’ve been a subscriber for many many years now to the industry magazines (I am/was a developer myself), so I can say this for certain. Sure sexy chainmail is heavily featured due to it’s sell-ability, but the decision to include it in the game was most likely made by a woman.

We have implemented relocating Starter Dungeons, as I’m sure you’re aware. We plan to extend this to Expansions. With that, players are concerned with this being too easy to take out new players. So, you’re suggesting that players are able to Relocate an Expansion, however they cannot go into another Region, until it is filled?

Filling a region should not be the pre-requisite, as it may take anywhere from a day to a month+ to do so. I suggest a timer on each region, set for say 30 days. Last person in may not be builtup at all, true, but at least the region isn’t a newbie hunting ground.

Starter or expansion is really irrelevant to this, as either could be set up as a war dungeon and thus a newbie killing station.

For what it’s worth, this was once my field having worked for Westwood Studios and later for numerous Indie teams. How you folk handle these changes is the biggest problem here, especially with an online mostly-paying base. Sending a few delegates to monitor forums and engage in chat is simply not enough (no offense). You need a few of your experienced and more knowledgeable players providing direct feedback on every proposed change of this magnitude. I suggest folk like MatGB.

That said, I see most folk legitimate concerns about the time of upgrades to be war-base centered. Having a queued buildup akin to the creature system would be enough for most cases, ie pop-up menu and you choose the final level. However, the trouble with a war-base is that while it only needs a few special buildings to be useful, the pre-requisites can be overwhelming. For example, a small tavern for my thieves is sufficient, a small guardpost is fine, and a crypt 2/11 is fully adequate. Yet to get those, I need quite a few other buildings first. So. Perhaps revisit the prerequisites if the team really feels that slower builds is where they wish to take this. Perhaps I only need that temple (or whatever) if I want my crypt above the most basic usable level (2/11)? That might solve the mobile base problem while still slowing down the power base.

Teleporting has been discussed as having potentially serious repercussions to new players. I believe there is a simple solution. As regions fill completely before new ones are opened, each region needs a timer of say a month. You cannot teleport into a region still under that ‘newbie’ timer. Now, a newbie in that region that is advancing quicker than most (or paying) is welcome to teleport out of it and into an older more established region to begin the wargames, but those inside are safe for the first month or so.

The most simple “fix” for downgrading, would be to make it akin to Evony style. Incremental downgrades take time, yet give back some resources (adjust upwards for the increased time. 25%?). But… there is an option of ‘tear-down’ which is a one stop option, takes far less time, yet returns nothing.

Re: Specializing dungeons. This is currently difficult to do; I have wanted to do so in IA for some time, as managing 9+ full blown dungeons is just too difficult. I’d love to have my pillagers in one spot, with my coven and perhaps a prison. Yet, in order to do so, I must first build another 5×5 that I really don’t want nor need. Now if Necro does stick with GSB and such being used for just one dungeon, it may even prove impossible to have a Coven dungeon, as there may not be enough available tiles to build the pre-requisites. I have no problem with less tiles, it will force specialization upon us, but do lower pre-reqs as well.
