Topic: Kongregate / So Basically Another PM Complaint Thread, But With Glitter

All regular Kong forum users will have read several threads that complain about games sending them a ton of PM’s. Although I agree this is annoying, I have simply accepted it. My opinion is, it’s easy enough to desubscribe. However, it is entirely over-the-top for a game to send out Mass-PM’s simply to ask for your vote for GOTM/W. If we wanted to rate your game, we would have done it the first time. Who in their right mind would go to a game simply to help it get a higher rating? Not only that, but the point of the contest is to have a game rating on the merits of the game, not on the mass response of Kong. I propose that any game dev that sends out a mass PM along these lines be banned from sending out mass PM’s for their games. (Decision and New Star Soccer are two recent examples). I lied about the glitter.

This is entirely false. Asians, specifically South Koreans are forced to start out their gaming careers on Kongregate by their parents. In fact, I would be willing to guess filiritz would be in alot of trouble if his parents found out he posted on the message board.

I agree with you entirely on this point.

Just for you who believe it is ‘Difficult’ to get the portals, the opposite is true. You can make it difficult on yourself by only playing for them by killing the correct creatures, or you can stand in a crowded nexus and wait until someone opens the portal you need. I tried both methods. The standing around method got me a dungeon in 4 minutes (Abyss). The playing in game got me one in 2 TP (about 30 seconds, UDL). Now I admit, both methods will take longer for Jungle, Tomb and Ocean, and you’ll have to go for some of the lower enemies for Pirate, Spider, and Snake den, but all-in-all, it’s less difficult if you use both methods.

And Senekis, the snake pit is dropped fairly frequently in godlands by Medusa and the like. I highly doubt you killed Oryx 5x and yet still didn’t get a single portal to it.

The very IDEA that tomb of the ancients (the hardest dungeon) is even remotely as difficult as Oryx 2 is not only wrong, but it’s laughable. Add to this doing the wine cellar until you get a set of equipment for WC tops? Just no.

BTW, for 7 dungeons, I would be willing to bet I could do them all in under 30 minutes. I would not be willing to say less than 1.5 hours for 9. Just some perspective for you raw.

I don’t mean to contradict, but the fact that neither of us has it is not too surprising. The most recent update included the Ocean Trench, and I’ve only played a few times since then (Finishing Skyrim just in time for ME3). If you’ll notice the highscores for me (why would you have), I haven’t cleared ANY of the dungeons since they added badges, because I haven’t played. As Bobby mentioned, neither has he/she. I would be happy to videotape me at flat lvl 20 doing all the dungeons following the ‘let everyone else do it’ method, (although I’m probably too lazy, so don’t ask).

I think your guys’ (guy’s?) problem is that you’re taking the admittedly annoying but obviously of difficulty hard 1st badge, and using that method to try to get the second hard. We’re not talking about actually DOING the dungeons (This is where Raw having thought this through is shining through. Right Raw? RIGHT?)
Lag, stupidity and carelessness, combined with using the 1st hard badge method (of build up your character and participate fully) on the 2nd hard badge WOULD warrant an impossible badge with the current requirements, just so we’re clear on my stance.

Topic: General Gaming / Minecraft or Skyrim?

I’ll lay out an argument based on more than the Buy Skyrim if x, buy Minecraft if Y.

Minecraft is an amazing game. I have been playing since beta, and only recently stopped. The best part of the game by far is online building with your friends, and online competition with random strangers who happened to join at the same time as you. In addition, the modding on the game is the best I’ve ever seen in any game ever, which is saying something. If you think there’s something that would make the world better, there’s probably a mod for it. Unfortunately, however many pros there are for the game, the game still stinks in certain areas. At the very lowest level of the game, you are building. Despite the Notchdates that added semi-butnotreally-endgame updates including the dragon, this game is not an RPG. It can never be an RPG. This game is not supposed to have an end. On this note, the fact that the world is practically endless is only partly true. Although it is completely true that you could walk for a LONG time before the game would wrap around itself (I’m not entirely sure how this works, but In know it ends sometime), eventually everything is the same. Maybe not identically, but the fact that there are ‘biomes’ means that in the end everything you see will fit into a number of distinct categories that are undeniably similar. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be endlessly creative on these areas, but the environment is not truly ‘endless’. Therefore, the game WILL get boring (although this is massively reduced by online play).

TL;DR of this section; Despite certain attempts at RPG, this game wasn’t meant to end. This game is creatively endless, but not environmentally, so will get boring.

Onto Skyrim. As has been mentioned, this game is insanely buggy. Make as many excuses as you want, but some things should have been fixed by now. You ALMOST DEFINITELY will have to go searching online for some console code if you want to complete every quest, and for many other things (including how to play the f**ing game so as to not flounder around like a pissing seal). Getting past that point, we can move onto the actual game. This game is catered to a huge variety of people, but all ending in the category of “Likes to spend massive amounts of time doing not particularly much”. As has been mentioned, the world is amazingly beautiful, made even more so by a nice computer and a large mod bank. People are not joking when they say you can spend a huge amount of time (I’m talking ~250 hours) playing this game. There are essentially 3 endings; 1.finishing the main questline; this can take 20 hours, or 150 hours, depending on how many other quests you do first and your playstyle. 2. 100%; this involves finishing all dungeons/quests. 3. Player maxed out; there is not really defining point of this, and most would not go to this point. Somewhere between ending 1 and 2 is probably the most common ending point. This game has no online features (other than some currently sh*tty mod), but Bethesda has recently said they’re releasing something of the sort (no details).

Section TL;DR: Game is glitchy and beautiful. At some points, drags on, but variable ending allows different personalities to decide when you’re done playing.

Review/Scoring:
Playtime: Tie. There is more potential in Minecraft, but I would say noone really plays after they’ve done everything.

Replayability: Skyrim. Given enough time between replays (to get past the “I’ve done this” grog), Skyrim. Simply choose a new class. A ‘fresh start’ in Minecraft quickly turns into more of the same.

Mods: Minecraft. Although Skyrim’s suite is impressive, the best are related to eyecandy, and don’t extend gameplay. Minecraft has mods for everything.

Online: Minecraft. Skyrim has online in dev, but I’ thought I’d throw this in because one of the best parts of Minecraft is the online playing.

Spontaneous measure of ‘Fun’: Skyrim. I’d like to explain that defining ‘fun’ is retarded in comparing these two. But it is important to think of Minecraft as a long term kind of game. You start building something new, and two hours later you have something to show for it. Whereas in Skyrim, you can jump out into the field, and immediately be faced by something that requires a variety of maneuvers to outwit and kill. You can choose any way to kill it you want; even switch mid-battle. Instantaneous enjoyment (the original point of videogames).

Updates: Tie. If we ignore the impending DLC and online, then Skyrim has almost entirely had bug-fix updates. Minecraft, on the other hand, has had a huge number of updates (not all good) in a variety of areas. If you don’t want to ignore future updates, Skyrim has this hands-down.

As I f**ing knew I would by that comparison, I concluded nothing. So I’ll give you a final conclusion. Both Minecraft and Skyrim are good right now, but Skyrim is going to get better in the next year or so. Minecraft will slowly get better. Strictly on this basis, you will not want to replay Skyrim for the DLC and online. Go buy Minecraft.

TL;DR The author doesn’t really know the peeing habits of seals.

Topic: Kongregate / 2nd Hard Badge for Realm of the Mad God Should be Impossible

I would say that you guys are doing it wrong. The point of the game is that it’s a ‘group’ initiative. All the badge requires is going through the door that the boss makes when it dies. This means it is theoretically possible to wait at the beginning of a dungeon with many people, and wait until they’ve killed the boss. This is made VASTLY simpler by the fact that keys are frequently purchased, putting dungeon entrances in the nexus, so you don’t have to go into godlands to find the entrances. The only places where this would be even remotely difficult are Snake Pit (because of the snakes that spawn, easy for any level 15+), ocean trench (because you need to have some speed to get to the next airpocket, level 20 should have enough speed easily), and tomb of the ancients (this one requires finding a room other than the starting room without traps, most difficult, because you do have to get back to the main room upon completion. Still doable for a flat lvl 20).

So I very strongly disagree for this being an impossible. It is not only fairly simplistic upon determination of method, but it’s completely doable without firing a shot! If the requirements were to get soulbound damage on the final bosses of each dungeon INCLUDING Wine Cellar (and Castle Walls/Castle), then I would agree that an impossible is a good idea (a hard impossible with WC, an easy impossible with C/CW).

As far as skill for the first hard badge, I agree that after a certain point, no level of dodging and avoiding certain situations will keep you from dying. It is when you reach that level that drags on your pocketbook and time become a problem. However, none of the requirements are really this far into the game. Compared to some of the other hard badges (I don’t really like to do this, since I have complained at Backyard Monsters/25 other games withe the rest), this is a cakewalk.

TL;DR You’re doing it wrong. Less QQ more PewPew. Invest a few hours; the game has alot to offer.

I never enjoyed Pizzeria due to its grindiness and unrealistic characters (at least we have to wait like ten minutes to get a pizza in our local pizzeria). I liked Burgeria a lot more due to its upgrades. Taco Mia introduced closers and ingame badges, giving in some variety. In Freezeria, you could decorate the restaurant by your own and Pancakeria finally added minigames, as well as interesting new unlocks and topping mechanics. The only reason I see why Pancakeria wouldn’t get badges are people like you, whining about too much repetition. The rating’s good, the API works – I don’t see why it wouldn’t get badged.

So let me get this straight;
Step 1: Find old game that has a mediocre rating.
Step 2: Add minigames and tweak it in other small ways. This new game is entirely novel and should be treated as such.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit.

I don’t want to be antagonistic, but what you have just outlined basically follows this scheme. By adding in relatively cosmetic details (cosmetic here transcending the idea of pure graphics), I do not believe a game is ‘new’. A game is new when it comes up with a novel idea, gameplay, and graphics. As is typical in this series, the storyline is sorely lacking, which would be OK, if the other games had a storyline. This idea is hardly novel, which would be OK (look at the variety of escape the… games), if Flip would’ve given the illusion of a new way to play. You would be silly to say that the graphics have really changed, but this is OK, at least as far as industry is concerned (ppl complain when you change your graphics too much, anyway). One could argue the second is satisfied, but the others are not. In my opinion, games that are OK should not be given badges, let alone badges that require you to play a mediocre game for an extended period of time. And as far as your whining comment, it’s more of sobbing and ruing the day it will get badged. Will you be my shoulder to cry on?

EDIT: I should mention that this is simply my opinion; Gregismojo will do whatever they feel is right. Perhaps this can persuade them to avoid even traces of grind?

We complain all the time about the game being ‘too similar’ to the previous in a series. The differences between the papa’s games are marginal, at best, and the game is BASED around doing the same things over and over. I enjoyed the pizzeria when it first came out, but do not enjoy having to grind for like 20 hours to get the badges; it stops being fun quickly. The fact that you also badged the other games in the series with similar requirements (although indicative of the likelihood of this post going unheeded) further demonstrates the similarity between the games. Please, no badges for pancakeria, regardless of the rating.

Topic: Technical Support / Red Plug Woes Again

+-Hi all, I’m trying to figure out why I keep getting a red plug while playing games on this new PC. I don’t get a red plug when using Chrome, but while using the firefox beta, I do. I have reinstalled flash, firefox, cleared cache/cookies, forwarded ports 5222/5229, disabled adblock/firewall with no change. Anything I am missing that could be screwing me over? I’m using dual HDD (read firefox is not in default location), Windows 7, if it matters. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi whoever answers this, I’ve been having troubles on my new PC trying to get the red plug to turn green. I’ve cleared and refreshed up the wazoo. The games all load and work like normal, but no matter how long I wait, neither chat nor the badge server work, which prevents me from getting the BOTD on this computer (other computers work). Any suggestions?

I’m using adblock, firefox 11, windows 7, better kongregate w/ greasemonkey if it matters.

Add another question: (two-parted) Are you going to be doing every badged game/ every game once it gets badged, or only ones you select? If not, if the game dev has a walkthrough, will you be less likely to do those games? I think the answers to these questions could make or break you (and Tass).

Topic: Kongregate / Best of 2011

I’m just curious as to why people would be opposed to splitting the quest up into two equal sections of 5 games: sequels and non-sequels. Obviously, (more by experience than anything), a sequel will be rated higher than the original a large percentage of the time, because people recall the sequel as being better than the original, even if it isn’t. Therefore, the ratings are skewed. It is not fair to treat all games as equal. I think most would agree that there are several sequels that simply cannot compete with other games, yet make the list (I won’t name specifics, as opinions vary). Furthermore, adding 5 separate games will allow some of the not-as highly rated games to make the list that may have been excluded otherwise (as far as voting). I.e. allowing votes on one non-sequel game and one sequel game will allow more selections from sequels and non-sequels to be ‘in the running’, because after all rating isn’t that important in comparison to how good you remember it being (e.g. you may have had a bad experience during gameplay, but you recall the game as being excellent). Therefore, I submit my bipartite quest. (In practice, this may be a half-medal awarded, then upon completion of the other half, that half taken away and the whole medal given.)

Sequels:
1. Learn to Fly 2
2. Rebuild 2
3. Last Stand: Union City
4. Gemcraft Labyrinth
5. Vote
(I didn’t include Cursed Treasure: Level Pack because the explanations in the map pack don’t make for a particularly complete game without the original.)

Non-sequels:
1. Kingdom Rush
2. Villainous
3. Burrito Bison
4. Flight
5. Vote

Personally, I would like to see ROTMG and William and Sly 2 in the voting positions, for innovation and artwork respectively, but there are obviously many opinions.

I really like realm of the mad god, and would like to see it get badged. That said, the current API is not particularly helpful. I would like to see an easy badge for getting a character with fame of 10 (It requires essentially no skill, because you get fame for being the first character). A medium could be get 5 stars, although this would be a sort of difficult medium. I would like to see a hard of defeating one of the core gods, but there is no api for it right now, and it may just turn into a huge group of 80 people all going for it at once. I don’t think there should be a badge for a character with a high lvl of fame or stars, as it gets fairly grindy, and would not be enjoyable. Another solution for a hard bade would be to unlock a certain number of characters (up to you). Any way you slice it, the game needs more highscores reported to get a decent number of badges.
