Topic: Game Programming / About curly braces

I used to use the first style, but switched to the second because it takes up one less line for the same logic. This increases the amount of logic that I am able to view on my screen assuming that the code’s length is beyond a screen. It’s much easier to troubleshoot a problem when you view as much of the relevant code to the problem as possible, as opposed to having to scroll down or up slightly.

Topic: Game Programming / Imaginary Area

I’m not exactly sure what you are trying to achieve, but countryAdj.x should get country.x – 1 and CountryAdj.y should get country.y – 1 in that example. If you are trying to find adjacent territories, perhaps you could store the territories in a grid. Or have each territory have references to the territories that it is adjacent to. Again, I’m not sure what the task is: mind posting a picture/diagram of some sort?

Topic: Game Programming / Pausing a Game with Timers

Interesting problem. Unfortunately I can’t think of a way of solving it in a simple way using AS3’s Timer. I’d recommend building your own timer class which would have a start() and stop() method that behaves the way you want. Use flash.utils.getTimer to keep track of time and listen for ENTER_FRAME events. Or hope that someone else knows a better solution w/ AS3’s Timer.

Looks nice chachon2, are there more levels? Would love to try out a demo.

You might wanna try the collaboration forums as well, even though it isn’t exactly a collaboration. You’ll be more likely to find someone suiting your interest. Nice art by the way :D.

Topic: Game Programming / turret rotation, click and shoot help [AS3]

What exactly is the problem? You didn’t specify what was wrong with the code, i.e. is it not shooting? Also, post your code on a site like pastebin.com so it preserves formatting and is much easier to read.

EDIT: Also, just a tip that doesn’t relate to your problem: instead of if(leftArrow == true), you can achieve the same effect by using if(leftArrow)

Topic: Game Programming / Need help please.

Sounds like you are trying to implement simple physics: velocity, acceleration and gravity. Basically, you want the character’s direction to represent their acceleration, and for gravitational acceleration to be active. If you don’t have a decent grasp of physics, I would just recommend learning AS3 and using an AS3 physics engine to do all that dirty work for you (something like Flixel) since it is much better in the long run. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with AS2 so I can’t find a good velocity-AS2 tutorial.

Yeah, you need to post the code that you added and even better as much relevant code as possible that you think could have been affected or be the cause of it.

Topic: Game Programming / GiTD [#30] Winners Announced!

  • 1st: Crawling Through Weird Places – Fun and is in a playable state!
  • 2nd: Dungeoneers – Seems like it could be very fun. It is disorientating at first though.

  • Dungeon – Probably would’ve voted if it had content. Even though it wasn’t an original idea, it seemed like you could have executed it very well. Was anticipating something epic :P.
  • Untitled Dungeon Puzzle – Interesting, but I think the dungeon theme actually detracted from it because of how it took the art direction. Seems like it could be a solid game on a touch/mobile device.
  • Escape the Dungeon – Has potential, but clunky and slow to control atm. Hero should be be centered consistently or something? It’s weird at how the hero stays around the center.
  • Dungeon Blocks – Neat idea. I don’t understand how the story relates to the game play, though.

Topic: Collaborations / Flash RPG project - AS3 coder wanted

I am very interested in this project, but I am somewhat inexperienced. All I have to show is my Game in ten days #28 submission. All of the stuff that I’ve worked on are very small, so I’d love to start building a portfolio with actual large, quality, polished games. I would be extremely committed and dedicate many hours everyday. As a small note I would prefer using haxe rather than AS3.

Topic: Game Programming / GiTD [#28] Voting - Winners Announced!

1st Place – Explode or Die by Gama11
2nd Place – Avoid or Die by Kewry

If I were to pick a third place it would be either Hunt or Die or Lure or Die. Lots of the other entries looked like they could be great if they had more content. I would’ve voted for GITD or Die if it had more gameplay, since I could imagine playing it for a long time. Reminded me of Game Dev Story on the iPhone. Save Kitty or Die Trying and Fry or Die are also games I thought could use more content to reach 2nd or 1st place for me.

@UnknownGuardian Ah, I see. Thanks for that!

@Kewry Yeah, I struggled with designing levels a lot. And about the collision: I actually hadn’t realized that the perspective makes it seem like you should be able to go behind the jelly cubes a bit. Seems I’ll have to adjust some of the collision code.

Okay, I’ve edited it back. Can’t seem to get the links to work.

First time writing a long post in a forum.

EDIT: Oh and if you could tell me what my mistake was that would be great!

Feedback

nutter666 – Escape or Die!
-Great atmosphere. Even without music or particularly scary sound effects I feel really tensed and immersed. Can't imagine how much it would improve with those in place.
-Bit of lag when moving the character and the flashlight.
-Titlescreen instructions are a bit hard to read because they are the same color as the background

RTL_Shadow – Conserve or Die
-Nice animations, very smooth feeling to the game.
-There's a bug where upon killing a blue square, the image persists but it does not move. Happen twice on separate occasions, but I'm not able to reproduce it consistently.
-Being able to move needs to be more obvious
-The ammo looks weird, because it's different from when you shoot.

Gama11 – Explode or Die!
-Good choice of music, very suiting.
-Animation is very good, the bomb is quite cute looking.
-The background color should be a bit darker I think.
-Won't comment on the level designs since they seem to be changing, but the earlier designs reminded me of Super Mario World ROM Hacks which is cool.
-Should make restart button customizable, or at least closer to the rest of the keys since it will be used a lot.
-Starting a level in mid-air delays the action, bothersome since you usually just restarted and want to try again ASAP. I would suggest removing it, but I can see that it's useful for people who want to get faster times.

SSDRWH0 – Gamble or Die!!!
-When you restart, you should just go back right into the action rather than narrating the story again. Even though you can skip it, it would be better to just avoid the whole ordeal.
-Text on the cards could use an increase in size.
-Needs some suspenseful/bomb diffusion/gambling music!

MossyStump
-Instructions need to be included! Though I was able to figure what was going on. Unclear that you're the green thing.
-Could use a decrease in speed, or perhaps be configured by the user.
-It's disorienting to control, since it moves quickly and you have to keep track of your current direction
-Has some great potential for some puzzling gameplay I think. Interested in what it'll turn out like.

Kewry
-Beautiful particles!
-What you can touch and can't touch is hard to discern. You should consider using colours to help with this: it's weird to be able to collect the red molecules because they look bad ( as in bad to touch ). It's also weird to get hit by the green cloud thing, because it looks good.

Darkscanner
-Animations are really nice. I particularly like the screen moving when you get the upgrade, and I like having a big radius/aura surrounding my character.
-Looks to have a lot of potential!

Senekis93
-Seems to be shaping up beautifully.
-Ball/Avatar is a bit too small and/or doesn't contrast well with the black background.

Aesica – Fight or Die
-Shows the foundations for an epic game. Anticipating a great game when it's fully complete though it'll be awhile.

alecz127 – Hunt or Die
-Hasn't changed from when I last commented on it I think, though I'm very interested in what it'll be like.

Shake_N_Baker – Save Kitty or Die Trying
-Similar to Fight or Die, seems to show great potential, but it'll take some time to complete.
-Why do I start with 2/3 hearts? That's just not fair.

AMD_Paulius_J – Lure or Die
-"Dead" screen disappears too quickly.
-Maybe give some spears if you die?
-It's really satisfying throwing spears in this game. The response from hitting a cannon is rewarding and the speed in which you are allowed to throw consecutively is fast. I think it would be interesting to use the spears more rather than the dodging/luring aspect of the game. Maybe even make it become a shooter/thrower kind of game.

Moshdef – Jump or Die
-Pretty fun. The top half of the gamescreen isn't used enough, though (unless it is in later levels, not sure )

Gharrot – Flee or Die
-Reminds of the "The World's Hardest Game Ever".
-Not being able to touch the walls is prety brutal
-Fun to play, but difficult.

Current state of my entry: Slime or Die!
Press ENTER to play, and WASD/Arrow keys to move.
Level counter is in the top-left if you would like to comment on a specific level. Don't have a level select yet unfortunately.

Controls: WASD – move, SPACE – attack, kill the deer and avoid the bear. If your hunt energy bar reaches 0, you lose!

Its a prototype, still a few things to add, namely levels. But its playable. Please critique me!

The stick art looks really good combined with that background. I love just looking at the deer and bear animating. And did that bear just eat the deer? Awesome. Some sound effects would improve it a lot. More enemies/scenery or perhaps a large scrolling map style would definitely keep me interested. Also a minor thing: allow arrow keys to substitute as WASD?

Sounds good. I got too caught up in actually complete a game for the first time, so I didn’t consider the theme much at all. So little theme relation will be coming from me. Although the experience from making the game is quite valuable enough. Thank you UnknownGuardian for hosting the GITD contests, it’s such a great initiative. It must take up quite a bit of time to manage all this.

@DrYoshiyahu

Well, if ‘to slime’ means to elaborately maneuver, then I guess it could.

Just wondering, how strict/what does the theme mean exactly? I’m a bit concerned that my game doesn’t really have a theme or make any sense actually, but it does have the correct title.

For the Warning class, try removing the :void? Constructors don’t return any type, though I’m not sure if that’ll fix your error.

Thanks for the link SSDRWH0! Haha, I completely forgot substrings existed since my last ICS course. Couldn’t grasp how to get the visual trick of making the text slowly appear at all.

For music, one can use incompetech, there are very good pieces that are royalty free and all you have to do is credit him.

@SSDRWH0
I like the idea of having to gamble in a time limit. Mind if I ask how you did the RPG narrating style text at the beginning? I tried to do that once for a project but couldn’t figure out how.

Topic: Game Programming / help with an error

Not sure of the problem since its occurring rarely, I think you need to give more information like:
Which array access is causing the rangeError, and post more related code like the full loop where the variable i is declared?( seems to be a nested loop? )

Topic: Game Programming / Best Isometric engine?

I have only used as3isolib, so I can’t tell you how it fares with other libraries/engines. However I’m pretty satisfied so far with it so far: it’s pretty easy to pick up and create your own iso engine. My only complaint is that I can’t seem to find many updated resources/tutorials on it. The ones I found use old versions of as3isolib which makes it difficult to figure out how to apply it to the current version of as3isolib.

http://www.gotoandlearn.com/play.php?id=136
http://www.gotoandlearn.com/play.php?id=137

Those two links lead to a two part video that provided for me a very nice, simple introduction to as3isolib.
(That site has other useful game dev videos/posts as well!)

EDIT: http://www.flashrealtime.com/flash-game-library-engine-list/#ISO <- List of engines! Check the sources for a whole bunch of them.
