It could have been another mario kart. Unofrtunately controls are a little floaty, the stars system, as already mentioned, kinda useless and the game is missinga simple a tree of achievements: Cups+medals, perks of any kind - you name it. For multiplayer fun it's quite a balst though!

IMO The stars should be unique instead of the current grinding system. This way you would have to pick up every star in game (no need to be in the same race), what would "manigfy" the track and the "secrets" in each map.
A chart for each pilot would be helpful. Aceleration, top speed, control...
minimap/velocimeter/nitro bonus on start for accelerating at the right time wouldn't be bad also.
Different commands for drift/jump. Also, jump should last a little longer to be functional (jump over water and oil pool)
Other than that it is a great game i really liked these kart games back then, specially diddy kong rancing for N64.

very nice design, challenging ai, good kart handling. needs a multiplayer mode and a shop to buy stuff

Wow this game is something, its good but it can definitely push to be better. Good graphics, music, interesting stylized characters, maps are awesome, wow just wow... Sadly the game is let down by the controls, just tweak that up and you sir have a really good game.
Keep on working it till its the best that it can be :D
