I'd like for the combat text to be slower, I generally cant read everything as I fight.

Also, the main point of early playthroughs is unlocking new classes. If you feel like you can't progress with your current class, experiment with some of the newly unlocked classes. My suggestion for beginners is the monk: upgrade your equipment early, in battle always power up with metsu followed by an attack. Also level a bit before you try the "Trials"
