I have read your comments and took some of your suggestions.
new features include:
1. down arrow is now ‘pause’ for convenience.
2. dynamic text box to tell you when game is paused.
3. ball now spawns after death on the paddle

Generally I thought when you lose the ball it appears back on the paddle and then launches off rather than spawn in the middle of the screen and launch in a random direction. Mostly because of that reason this is terrible.

So, have we figured out why the ball is traditionally launched from the paddle on restart with breakout games? This could be addictive if it wasn't for the frustration of watching 5 or 6 lives fire down the drain once you slip up once. Also, lead the game in with a countdown, or throw up the word 'paused' or something. As you can see from other comments, some people are having trouble figuring out that the game begins paused. Good attempt, needs serious refining. Keep Trying!

my problem is that i think i have it figured out where the ball will go, but then the ball will fly in the opposite direction causing me to lose lives as it keeps switching from being launched right or left

And i thought the iPod version of BreakOut was bad...it seems like he took the iPod version and made it a crappy flash game...
