The buffs have a habit of spawning at the edge of the screen and traveling immediately off-screen. Their random direction of travel should always NOT be towards the edge they've spawned nearest.

Interesting concept, but there's not much to do but chase the time limited buffs initially.
Slow start and buff chasing becomes pointless if you have to leave the game for any reason. Having spent a half hour chasing buffs and getting it quite high, just going to make a coffee and returning saw all that effort gone in 60 seconds. What might be useful is to add in a buff trade in temp for permanent at a 10:1 ratio, so that for the remaining time of the run, trading in your buff levels gained for a 10% fixed benefit till prestige will at least give you a sense of accomplishment if you do choose to chase the buff boxes for a bit.

other color games do the color values multiplicative. you are doing it additive. That way I feel there is no point in doing anything beyond red. After 20 minutes of this I feel like no progress is being made. Make the player feel like just closing it and never coming back again. Not a good start my friend

If you take most of the top comment's suggestions and implement them -- multiplicative growth model instead of additive, buffs moving toward center always, longer/more permanent buff option, better prestige bonus -- you'll likely have a pretty good "clone" type game that will be enjoyable by a lot more people.
