Everyone seems to be asking about the 3rd ending. If you got the 1st and 2nd ending you'll notice something; You get sent to the ending right away in the Warmongering ending, whereas with the Royal ending you get a "Finish" button. Just don't finish, make more gold! (5 is enough if I recall.)

I'm surprised there wasn't an 'execution' ending for failing to produce the gold in time.

Yes! I too wanted the forge some swords and kill the king ending. Although gold is not the best material for swordmaking. I really expected us to be making those swords so we could tell him what we thought of his demands.
