psychological definition of evil is the exercise of power to intentionally harm psychologically, hurt physically, destroy mortally, or to commit crimes against humanity. Examples of this in the real world include Abu Ghraib prison torture where prisoners were subject to physical violence and extreme humiliation. More extreme examples include the Holocaust in the 30s and 40s and the Rwandan genocide which began in the 90s. 2. The lucifer effect is a celebration of the mind’s infinite capacity to make us behave kind or cruel and make us villains or heroes. Many people believe they are good but the Lucifer effect states that frame of mind can change in an instant. An example of this is a psychological study done by Stanley Milgram in 1960s where an authority figure told an unknowing participant to give ‘electric shocks’ to a pretend learner every time he would spell a word incorrectly. As the learner kept spelling words wrong, the participant would increase the shock voltage despite the learner screaming in agony and repeating that he has a heart condition. The lucifer effect and Milgram experiment proves that many people would be willing to harm others under instruction of an authority figure. 3. The three factors influencing the transformation of human character towards evil are summarized by dispositional, situational, and systemic. Dispositional is defined as ‘inside the person’ and most oftenly considers by culture, religions, and governments as the cause of behavior. Situational is defined as ‘outside the person’ and factors in one’s surroundings and environment as the cause of behavior. Systematic is defined as the power structure that creates and sustains the situation. 4. Philip Zimbardo’s definition of evil is the dehumanization of others and one’s lack of heroism when seeing someone being dehumanized. 5. Philip Zimbardo demonstrated the power of institutions through the Stanford Prison experiment that he conducted in 1971. In this experiment, Zimbardo investigated how readily people would conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a simulated prison life. Zimbardo was interested in finding out whether the brutality reported among guards in prisons was due to the personalities of the guards (dispositional) or had to do more with the environment (situational). At the end of the experiment, Zimbardo found that both the guards and prisoners adapted quickly to their new lives and concluded that people will readily conform to social roles they are expected to play. This ties back into the power of institutions because it shows us that people are easily brainwashed and can conform to institutions quickly. 6. People change their appearance to go to war to obtain anonymity. The reason soldiers go into war anonymously is because research shows that soldiers are more likely to kill the opposing soldiers who change their appearance. This is because psychologically the soldiers think that the opposing soldiers have no identity and therefore find it easier to kill, torture, or mutilate them. 7. The seven processes that grease the slippery slope of evil include mindlessly taking the first small step, dehumanizing others, anonymity, diffusion of personal responsibility, blind obedience to authority, uncritical conformity to group norms, and passive tolerance of evil through inaction or indifference. 8. In Zimbardo’s presentation, he states that “If you give people power without oversight, it’s a prescription for abuse” This means that if power is given to the wrong person, abuse and evil is bound to happen. He points to the Abu Ghraib prison scandal where the guards were given unstoppable power to torture and humiliate their prisoners. 9. Heroism is the act of ordinary people doing extraordinary moral deeds in specific situations. An example of this is when Joe Darby exposed the abuse and humiliation of the Abu Ghraib prisoners to a senior officer. Darby became a “hero-in-hiding” for three years with his wife and mother to protect their lives from violence. 10. We can instill heroism by encouraging children in specific courses designed to promote heroic imagination and heroic talents.
