Interesting concept, would be cool to be able to do things with what you've made... I can see a TD coming from this sort of thing... maybe thats just GemCraft. Possible just have a graphic in the background of your 'planet' that slowly changes based on what you've made... ?
Anyway, would be good to not be able to mix things you've already tried... have them bounce back and say "Element Exists" or something... also, amaybe having a "*/10" type option beside the categories you've found.

Also, it would be a little bit better if the combinations were intuitive, as opposed to pairs that "kinda-sorta have maybe a little to do with each other."

finally finished, a few hours done!

i think a big improvement would be to show a percentage of how complete each group was. that way, you kind of know where to focus your attention
