so according to my calculations, assuming that "upgrade blacksmith" is the only upgrade that matters in the long-run, each level of hellstone takes about 1.28 times as many days as the previous level.
A bit less if you include the effect from having more gems each rock.

@any24veper and ChrisCummings, He probably just has high idle power and active power for multipliers. Aside from that, he might have high auto-power and manual power.

The so called "flashes of inspiration" have failed for me EVERY SINGLE TIME. It might be a good idea to increase the rate of success higher than almost nothing. If not, why add them to the game at all?

it is a matter of how many gems you've been shoving into your pickaxes lately.
if you upgrade once for every time you give the blacksmith a gem, expect to get mostly usefull pickaxes.
if you shoved 2000 gems at the blacksmith, and upgrade once, then you'll have to shove around 2000 or so gems at him for a decent chance of a small improvement.
