I managed to exterminate every single country except australia, greenland, argentina, new zealand and peru by buying everything except diarrhea, depression and pulmonary endima or whatever its called, and by making it insect, rodent, water and airborne.

Started in Madagascar, thought "great!". 20 boring minutes later the first ship left... Then Brazil (of all places!) closed its airports, harbours and borders so I had to quit!

I started in Madagascar 3 times and failed miserably each one because it took about 20 days to spread to a second country. also nauto's strat works best with virus

So for those of you trying to get the hard badge, I was able to improve upon Nauto98001's system. Instead of buying one each of cold, heat, and moisture, only buy one for one of them, preferably heat. This will result in a slower infection rate, but problem countries will keep airports and borders open longer. The moment any country closes borders, etc., completely buy out all cold, heat, moisture, and drug, as well as sneezing, coughing, and vomiting. From there, buy as many life-threatening symptoms as you can in the first three tiers. This will help you get a sudden last minute push before countries catch on and close their borders. Keep an eye on Madagascar, Peru, Argentina, and East Europe. Those were my main problem areas. Using this technique (as well as the other points Nauto made) I was able to completely eliminate humanity three times in a row, including a top 40 finish and a top 20 finish for the day. Plus if this helps you out.

Note: Nauto98001's top rated comment flaw- you cannot start in Madagascar with this method. If you do, you will not be able to infect other countries because the virus can't travel any other way than overseas (for which you need waterborne).

There's way too much randomness in the game. Very good concept overall but bad execution. I restarted MANY times now and usually Madagascar is the main problem. Even starting there, you have Cuba, Japan and the Australia-area. I tried following the guides, but really it's just random and luck, even when doing so. The game is really old now, so I bet no updates are made, but for any sequel it would be more fun if you felt more like a virus designer and less a slave under random circumstances. It's mostly watch and do nothing. And if a country closes their stuff, it's restart. Getting wrong start country also means restart. Also there's so much illogic in the travelling between countries; should be a lot more travelling and boats should be more efficient in their paths, not move back and forth in the sea with no real direction. Too many flaws but good concept, 3/5.

1.) Pick Virus. 2) Start in Canada, New Zealand, Cuba, Greenland, West Europe, or Madagascar. If you do not get there restart. 3) Sell the starting symptoms, and buy sneezing (unless it is what you started with, just keep it). 4) Buy 1-1-1-0 resistances but no transmissions (they trigger closures). 5) Once four countries are infected, sell sneezing to get rid of visibility. 6) Wait until all countries are infected. If Madagascar closes its shipyards/borders or is not infected in 30 days, restart. 7) Buy all four drug resistances AND sneezing, coughing, and vomiting. 8) After a few days, unlock tiers 2-3, (do not buy tier 4 ever!) keeping whatever symptoms it gives you. 9) Buy fever, fatigue, diarrhea, pulmonary edema, and hypersensitivity. Then save for kidney failure and ataxia. 10) keep this comment alive Thanks for the comment! I got 13th of all time by using this method.

When you start outside Madagascar, you don't come in. When you start in Madagascar, a vaccination is found before you get outside... XD
