Here's another strategy you could use. 1. Start with New Zealand. 2. As soon as you can, make your virus airborne and put on sneezing. 3. Turn on every resistance 1-1-1-1. 4. After three countries are infected, turn off sneezing.
5. If a country closes, or all countries are infected after day 31, restart. 6. As soon as vaccine begins to develop, turn on all drug resistance. Turn on as many high grade symptoms as you can ( below grade 4) 7. constantly give your virus more symptoms and watch as the world falls to pieces. This worked on my first try as New Zealand.

i almost had them! what I did was pick virus, just let the points accumulate till i had 100 or so, bought every resistance to the max and every tier 1 symptom, and saved till i could afford all the transitions, and boom. everyone was infected and dying. fast. didnt finish though, i accidentally hit the 'x' button. :(

Wanna hear my strategy? I nearly got the impossible badge with it, but I accidentally clicked an outside link and lost that game...
1) Pick Parasite. It doesn't matter where you start. 2) Keep whatever symptom it gives you. Buy heat, cold, and drug resistances, lvl. 1 only. (It may take a while to get the points to afford it, but don't worry.)
3) Again, when you get the points, buy airborne and waterborne transmission. 4) When you get 19 points plus however many are necessary to sell your current symptom, do so, then buy the next level of symptoms and get pulmonary edema. 5) Wait until the world is infected. 6) Once you've infected every country, kill them all.
Now remember, this won't work right away either, but it has worked before. Just be patient. At least you won't have to restart over and over until your starting region is South Africa or Madagascar, right?

Earthquakes-disrupt hospitals, slowing the rate at which your number infected goes down and the rate at which the vaccine is developed.
Drought-Increases the rate at which any disease with the "insect" transmission vector infects new people
Flood-increases the rate at which a disease with the "waterborne" transmission vector infects new people
Hurricanes-Temporarily shut down public transit, airports, and schools
Riots-negate the effect of curfews.

If you're just in it to win (not go for the under 100 days thing) and have a LOT of patience, go for parasite. Best place to start is anywhere that doesn't have any borders (so, regions completely surrounded by water.) Sell your starting symptom and buy waterborne transmission. Unlock all the tiers (you shouldn't get any symptoms for buying tiers with parasite, if you do sell them) and buy 1-1-1-3 resistances. Wait until all the regions are infected. This will take a LONG time, but once it happens it'll go pretty quick. After all regions are infected, buy moisture resistance 2, cysts, and vomiting. Wait until every single person is infected. Then get necrosis, Pulmonary Edema, sores, insanity and then from there just watch as everyone dies. To expedite this process buy a new symptom that increases lethality every time you build up enough points.
