@Wurmish oh, i understand now. damn man, i didn't knew the game was getting that low of a profit, even though i know server costs are really high. by the number of plays, i thought it was a hit in other sites where ingame ads are allowed, including his.
So... the damn cheatmakers.... they used SQL exploits to get money and more stats like that, and abused the clientsided variables too.
Even though i didn't say it was variable obfuscation(serverside and clientside have nothing to do with obfuscation), i see you know the facts well.
Damn man, this is sad :/

@henry700, this is from Ben on his forums: "...the server to run SFDG cost $180 a month and the game earned me about $2000 in total over something like 2 years. $180 x 24 = 4320.
SFDG was not a big hit of a game, it only did well on kongregate where my in game ads arent allowed. " And furthermore, it's not just about obfuscating variables, it's about server security, which was compromised due to the game partially being ancient, and partially (as I understand) due to some exploits in code that existed at the time (SQL I believe). By the by, server security is something of not simple. Ben has someone working with him (as I recall) whose entire JOB is security. Furthermore I doubt Ben would retrofit this game because, as previously mentioned, not much in the way of profit to be made. But I digress, I miss this game.

Still he is very busy with Infinity right now. maybe when he is finished he can adapt the anticheat he is making for Infinity to this game... who knows.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
@Wurmish Not exactly. The game gets quite the profit since there are people who still play it everyday, and it's fairly easy to make a security system(easyer than making a server, and he made one): All he needs to do is to make some variables serversided so instead of sending "i have X HP" which is easy to hack, he could just make it "I shot weapon T" and the server calculates if/when the weapons hit other players using a simulator, and subtract HP from the player, then send his current HP to him, so he cannot change his HP, because it is serversided.
Of course, some parts are quite advanced, but most of the cheatmakers dont take much of their time to circumvent stuff that are beyond uber-basic.

why can i not own all the ships?? i spend over 100k upgrading a ship, get 5k as a trade in then have to start from scratch just to try something different? i needs me a bigger garage...

My favorite part is the part where people say "Do XYZ to fix the game." As though the developer, who makes games for a living, doesn't know how to make a game more secure. There's something interesting, it's called 'time', and the more time passes, the more things you have to do to make a game secure against new threats. And some games are just too old to be financially worth overhauling. Hell at least Ben's still got the server up for the data so that people can still get badges.

I Also HATE ****ing hackers they always come and ruin everything hack profiles cause chaos they need to get a life all hackers are herp derps who don't want to be nice like most others

Stupid trolls saying bad things about games. This game is good *I hate trolls* but hackers and trolls try to ruin it for other people.

Never really understood why peeps are so obsessed with multiplayer. Get a plasma relay, launch a few missiles, zap with the relay. One Dead Enemy. Wash, rinse and repeat. Got pretty boring pretty fast.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Funny moment, you're cruising along very fast, get knocked off course by an EMP missile and your husk of a ship still makes it to the next sector...just with no power.

My standard Conqueror/Eos combo (I miss multiplayer): EMP torpedo, LASS, arrive EMP blast, 6x Proximity blast, ruuuuuunnnn!!! Admiral class warships are hard to find now, though...

once you get something like pegasus shuttle with 2 pos con disks and lbss and the best snhanced engine. you should just not die. its so easy to get kills.

Does anyone know about any other games like this? I mean there is Star Trek Shattered something and that's pretty good by Vex Xiang but I'm really after a multi-player one of these =D

@Dimitrije2001: No it isn't. It's at 25+1, 2(25)+1, 2(2(25)+1, etc...so 26, 51, 101, 201, 401, 801, 1601, 3201, and then randomly 12801.

protip: the simple laser canon (space bar weapon) can serve as tracer ammunition for unguided weapons like javelins, to make sure you pointing in the right direction

the hyperspace charger engine allows you to use hyperspace unlimited. its howear requires 1 min to reset and charge when you use the hyperspace.

It would be nice to be able to not be required to trade in your ship, but I understand that any ship which you've left behind would stay at the old station.
Further, it would be the coolest thing ever if there were THREE parties warring for the universe, and if there were some way to capture sectors (with the mods balancing things, of course) and perhaps install stations.
Lastly, it would be nice if there were ways to earn a rank other than simply kills. Example: make a list of 10 things for promotion, and one must complete 7 of them; this would lead to less kill-farming and more creativity--"Kill a Destroyer with a Starfighter," etc.

Nicely done game, and this is a genre in which not often, the game turns out well!
Kudos to this game, and
