i can't even get a spell to fire... hold space, vortexes appear, highlight with mouse, click... nothing, let go of space, nothing... move in the direction of the shot, nothing... how do you fire a spell?

Advidses: First two upgrades must be ice spell and lightning, without it it is not possible to pass the maze with skeletons (( a bit bad designed because it is the most difficult level in the game. Next, try to get invisible on this level. Upgrade it and /or shield for defense. At last, upgrade spell casting boost full. Look for purple potion in all levels, this will increase health. With this advises the game will be very easy. I d like to have more lvls with stronger enemies.

Dude this game is awesome! The developer needs to start right away on a sequel! i know there is a spell for it but maybe letting us move two spaces a turn would be nice. i love the turn system and think it would be cool if you could add floor advantages like the slime monster trails slowing your walk while other grounds could enhance your spells effect or damage output or something like that. Oh and obviously more spells!!! The last idea i have is to make it to where once you've beaten the game on a lower difficulty you can replay it with the same spells unlocked upgrades on the next level of difficulty. That would mean locking higher difficulties until lower ones were beaten but it would be really awesome to have that kind of system. The story was hilarious. The gameplay itself sometimes seemed a little laggy in response time but thats more my computers fault than anything else. Great game!

Has anyone figured out a way to beat the Hedge Maze (level 2-2, I think) without taking damage or upgrading Frost Breath? I'm not stuck, I'm trying to do a minimal/no upgrades run, and wondering how much I can go without.
Wow, that is an ambitious goal! Not sure how far you can get with that, though. I know you can finish the maze without upgrades. And you can make it through without taking damage, but both at once that's tough! You'll have to ignore the skeletons at the graveyard for sure. The critical point are the two skeletons at the bottom. To defeat them without taking damage you'll need Magic Missile on level 2. Frost Breath on level 2 is not necessary, though it might be in the level after that. :)

Yesturday was running fine. Came back today to play a few more levels and the opening screen wont even load. Doesn't even start the initial Kongregate ad, so looks like this is a problem with Kongregate's loader.

Ok, that was pretty awesome. But, it would be really nice to have some carry over - some bonus in the next game, because of my winning the first. Like a bandana of infinite ammo or something.
"Preparing ingredients" should only be visible for a few seconds. Please, please, please help us fix this by at least telling us what kind of browser you are using :)
Then try to force a reload: Right click on the game, select "This Frame" > "Reload Frame". If it still doesn't work, could you open the developer tools console (usually F12 or CTRL+SHIFT+i, you might have to select the console tab in the new toolbar) and send the contents to support@HypnoticOwl.com? Would be a great help!
Yep, it's a little RPG-ish with the spell points but that's about it. We call it a Dungeon Puzzler. If you don't agree with the tags, please be so kind and rate them accordingly :)

One thing I don't like, is that near endgame the game gets easier and easier (playing on adept) Fireball/ lightning ball are a bit much at times, as can be dragon's breath. I hardly ever had to use tactical freezes anymore at one point - or any tactical spells for that matter. And once you get extension, it's basically good game. Even with one point in it everything is a cakewalk - once you put points there and can cast 3/4 spells every turn, nothing can even come close to you.
But apart from this and some other gripes (lack of variations in enemies in level, lack of interaction with items in-level. Could certainly use more in-game secrets and indeed, in-level checkpoints) this is a great game! I love the spellcasting, it makes so much sense - Propelling spells with an extra dot behind the formation, for example. Can not wait for a seuquel or extended version!

I, for one, loved this game. I think the way you made the spellcasting system work with the level maps was brilliant. I couldn't just barge in and fling spells around without planning ahead, but I wasn't railroaded into using only one type of strategy, either. Few games find that balance, and I think you did that well. The puzzles were challenging, but never felt unfair or needlessly hard to me. Every time I discovered just the right combination of spell and positioning to get past the enemies, the little "Aha!" moment made me feel like a genius.
I did occasionally find myself wishing for an "undo" button because I made a move, and then immediately realized what I should have done differently. Going back even just one step would have saved me from a lot of restarts. That said, the lack of such an option didn't kill my enjoyment.
The storyline made me smile, and the animation and graphics were beautiful. Fantastic work, Hypnotic Owl. 5/5.
What do you mean with "doesn't work"? If you are using the arrow keys, you should be in the game. You can use WASD or the numpad keys instead, but it's really meant to be played with mouse or touch input. It would be nice if you could send us the content of the developer console (F12) to support@HypnoticOwl.com should you run into any bugs.

Not my thing. I think that this spellcasting method would work nicely in a non-turn-based environment. Here it's just slowing the gameplay. Good luck with the next game.

Good game, but would realy like a level select - it would be great if I could go back to an earlier level and try to beat my score!

Uh, I don't know this because I set myself on fire or anything, but:
Careful with the burn effect of the fireball spell, you can burn yourself if you use it on an enemy that is too close to you.

It's Oryx 16-bit Fantasy Sprite Set. You can find it here: http://oryxdesignlab.com/sprites/
Also check out Dungeons of Fayte and Realm of the Mad God for two awesome games with these sprites :)

Freezes as soon as the second level starts. Which may be alright anyway, since the control scheme is really bizarre. Shouldn't use the same button to skip turns as to initiate spellcasting...

Comments: Awesome game! Dev, pls take a look at freeze, sometimes it doesn’t freeze/slow. Preview of the zone of effect could be great. Throw-able bolt can be annoying, chocking the char instead of another close by foe (multiple targets). Also blood magic don't cost 1 hp like desc says, but 1/2.
Tips: freeze cancel fire, fire cancel freeze. Bolt works diagonally, and on tiles adjacent to where it is cast touching a foe 1 or 2 tiles in front of you. Breakables can hide potions. Freeze prevents a foe from walking and attacking the same turn. Next to a door, casting freeze/fire facing the wall will stop the spell. Casting it in front of the door, it will go sideways into the room. Use blood spells; Better to lose 1/2 hp than getting hit losing 1 or 2. Don't waste level ups unless you really need to. Key spells: Arrow3, freeze3, fire3, fire bolt3, throw-able freeze2 and throw-able bolt3 (avoid using it if foes are next to you). Invisibility is a key spell without upgrading. Happy gaming!

I love it. The only thing I might add are checkpoints (particularly in the long levels with doors dividing them into obvious sections, and the secret areas) and some note at the end saying how many of the secret spells you found.
The game is hosted on mind-funk.de and integrated on Kongregate via an iframe. It sounds like your browser or a plugin you use, is blocking the game. What kind of browser are you using? Game is nice, but too undocumented. What's the difference between difficulty levels? Dose fireball cancel freeeze? Dose freeze cancel fireball? How much will different potions heal? What's the grave with a purple diamond on for? Misteries

After the game loads, I get a picture of the mysterious hooded figure, nothing else. After I click somewhere on that screen, the whole screen just goes black. I've loaded the game three times now with the same results each time. Guess I don't get to play.

5/5, liked the spells and especially the beginning was fun and challenging, by the end of the game critters had too many hitpoints and it was getting a bit tedious. Perhaps I should have taken the multi spell/round sooner..
Game would probably get better rating if you could save within levels, and I guess many people get frustrated by the maze level.

Great game, though I'm not much into puzzle games. Btw, the shock spell says it deals 2 damage but in my game it's only doing 1 on everything.

Spectacular game! For anyone having trouble, I highly recommend getting the freeze spell maxed out early - it's very useful for shifting enemies around, and synergizes well with the late-game spells.

Just started the game and am confused by how the spells work. Shock says it "spreads to 1 closeby enemy" but doesn't say what range that actually is. Considering this is grid based, that's weird.
Yeah describing how Shock works was kinda hard with that amount of space. But if you look at the tutorial hints and test it a little, you'll get it pretty fast ;)

controls are really confusing at first. but what keeps bugging me out is that if i go into spellcasting mode, do something wrong, and then quickly go back, it counts as a double tap to pass the turn. this need to be fixed. i should be able to view controls when clicking on the menu, and not have to look at kong to see that i am supposed to press h. which btw doesn't work on third level ( it conjure the insutrction book in the middle of the room, but not in my view).
Thanks for the feedback! I've just fixed the help screen bug (to reload right click on the game, select "This Frame" > "Reload Frame").
Regarding the controls: The game is meant to be played with a mouse or touch input. Your problem with the spellcasting is kind of the reason why I didn't make the keyboard & gamepad controls very visible. If you tap the spellcasting key two times with less than 300ms time inbetween it will register as a double tap. If I reduce the time any more, you'll get problems if you want to pass a turn.
