Does the Altar of Wealth scale in any way? I feel like it's not really a very good choice most of the time. It'd be more tempting if it offered something like a scaling boost to the amount of gold you receive, like +sqrt(dungeonfloor) per gold pile.

is it even possible to finish this game? i died like 30 times already.
once i was at the max lvl 20...but no chance only made it to 13/16 or something.
Check the score board. Lots of people winning, including some quite frankly insane sub 45 speed runs. Rogue-likes are tricky if you're not used to them though. Takes a lot of unlearning the habits of mainstream RPGs. I like to think of it like a game of chess where you carefully consider each move. I think for a lot of people this just isn't the sort of genre they are interested in which is totally fine. I believe there's room on Kongregate for all sorts of different games.

Fun game, but I was disappointed with the ending. It's just - okay, you're done! I prefer a bit more story. It'd be neat to continue into infinite levels perhaps.

Beat it with fire mage didn't make it in time for the medals and on the last level I had to spam the storm mage's stun skill lol

if you click some empty walkable space while using 'charge' skill, then time is temporarily paused for you to select where exactly to do you want to charge to. This is useful. However, one can abuse this to do speed run. because you can charge across the whole floor and skip it altogether. I suggest fixing by limiting charge range.

Pretty fun game you got here. It's enjoyable and pretty addictive. It can be frustrating at times though. Specifically in the teleporter style area where you spawn in a room with a bunch of enemies and no way to deal with them. The squishy classes just get decimated unless the mobs start killing themselves or you've got a good fear scroll or something.

I give. I can't do it. I really can't figure out how to finish this game. Good game, but a wall blows down and I just can't.

in answer to some questions here: picking up a skill book gives you a minimum of 2 in that skill, if you had one or 0 it becomes 2 else it stays as it was.
barbarion gives weapon skill, ranger is not findable yet but will almost certainly give ranged, warrior gives fortitude, rogue gives stealth and the 3 mage books give 2 in their own school of magic. sofar nothing gives focus.
starvation doesn't kill you directly, it merely makes it so you loose one hitpoint every several moves. the same will getting 10/10 cold on the ice levels do but that damage is a lot higher and it will also slow you.
enchanting can be done up to 5, but after that you can find upgrades for higher bonusses (or get them from scroll of acquirement). if you get more weapons or rings than you have room for you still have them (sell or use up so you get a free weapon spot, then save and quit and it will probably fill the empty spots with items you could not see but had. you can also enchant the items you cant see.

I find the game fun and challenging in general. What I don't find fun is the teleport and pitfall traps. It's one thing to intentionally get yourself into trouble and have to work your way out. It's another thing when you are randomly teleported into a swarm of spiders and have no way to defend yourself.

Would be nice if completing the game with one character gives some sort of bonus (even if minimal) that carries over to other characters and for repeat play. Might make it more likely for players to continue pursuing the game with other characters and to try and improve their times.

My fire mage on exploration mode engaged a crate at point blank range with his fireball staff in a room full of vines.

Hi, getting "CONSTRICTED" on Stairs gets you bound on it and you cant wait!! The only way to unbug this is to Save&Quit ;) This may apears by webbed too.

The game is very unforgiving. I died for the 4th time after 1 hour+ progress because of some surprising game mechanic. Since the game was probably made by 1 person it is limited and repetitive. You need to be obsessive to be successful in the game.

it's really something when you stumble upon sufficient bookshelves as a Necro in the early game to progress Talent -> Cloud -> Cannibalism, and also get Shoes of Speed. It's absolutely wonderful… until you screw up your spacing, get webbed, and get killed in one shot by two measly green spiders. I personally prefer the blitz approach of "let's just run super fast, kite the whole map, kill everything with staff bolts, and if it gets too much i can just buy some distance and Poison Cloud the whole thing," which works especially well in the undergrowth so long as you don't let any spider with more than your instant damage from your staff in hp web you.

With the new Talent Merchant, it's pretty easy to go over 6 active skills... but I can't find a way to use them. Bug? Or am I missing something?

When you're starving, you lose hp. As the necromancer, that can be managed for a while with Life Spike, but only as long as there are enough enemies to suck life from.

the Book of Rage (Barbarian's skill book) doesn't give any skill points on being picked up. I know all the mage books give 2 points in their school, and I believe Rogue gives 2 to stealth. I don't know about Ranger or Warrior, but it seems odd that Barbarian as a skill book gives nothing at all when you gain the class.

Dumb-ways-I-Died-1 Running into a room full of maggots while being chased by a boa, and with no health or healing items... I had 4 of the talent books, and started with storm mage. +3 robe, helm of telepathy, good stuff... down the drain. ):

I don't generally like rogue-likes because they often scale the difficulty way too quickly. However, I think you struck a good balance with this one. Just found this game and spent the day playing it. Haven't finished a dungeon yet, but I did get far enough several times to not be totally frustrated with the game.
Each class is enjoyable (though I fee the rogue is lacking in talents), and I really appreciate that you can multi-class by finding/buying class books (and the increased, difficult choices of where to spend skill and talent points). I don't often rate games either, but I wanted to give this one props for rescuing me from the idle games that have sucked up my time these past few months.
Thank you for a fun and entertaining game!

Gaining two skill points for picking up a book but not starting with two skill points in the skill related to the starting class seems odd.

Love the game, but I've got to wonder. How do healing mushrooms die from being stepped on yet survive the blast of a bomb?

Hope the Ranger book becomes available as a random drop soon so I can finally win a game with the Rogue to get the full set

Brief review: GREAT! I like the feel of this, I like how certain classes are "easy" mode and others are "insane" - harkens back to the days of SNES RPGs like this.
That said, I feel as if Rogue needs a definitive "stealth" skill - not just boosting a stat - give them the ability to vanish, giving a guaranteed melee crit, and you've got a viable build now.
The magic classes seem to be much more powerful than the melee, though. I'd like to see an "easy" mode melee character.
Otherwise, thanks for sharing this awesome game!

capkloud: gold is for buying stuff and services, a guranteed merchant is on level 6, on other levels he can spawn too, later you can also buy skill/talent point and full heal/mana recovery + a nice resistance buff very late in the game if the right npc's spawn. In many roguelike games money only can be spent at certain locations, this game is no different

azathea I have finished the game with all 7 chars, no execptional luck required, though in the case of the rogue I chose to just ignore the class and wait for a different tome to drop. I think rogue is the only exceptionally weak class there is, though having played ranger with a helmet of telepathy I think I will go to keen hearing next I get a rogue book(unless I have the helmet again ofcourse)

please for the love of the game make items drop more....there is a serious lack of item upgrades in every playthrough and leveling up can ONLY get you so far...if you have reached the 6th floor and your main ability is still doing only 4 damage to enemies with 60+ hp because you havent gotten a single weapon upgrade there is a serious problem. I've done at least 15, probably more, playthroughs and ive only seen a staff upgrade once. Ive only ever seen cloth drop for the Mage, and every class other than the necro seems severely underpowered. Its not so much about player skill with each class, its that the other classes beyond necro really are underpowered to the point that its prohibitively difficult to play any of them. I love roguelikes, they are my favorite type of RPG/dungeon crawler. This game is awesome it just needs some quality of life tweaks.

i hate games like this. its fine to be "rogue like" but dont give me gold that serves no purpose or can only be used if i actually finish a dungeon. i have no idea what gold is for if anything as i dont have the patience to hope i beat the RNG bullshit factor that is this kind of game.

you've adeed a bit of text to the bottom of your game which means I can actually scroll up and down which probably isn't intended
