dying at level 16 because you cant find any food, the hunger aspect is just not adding much to the game, just useless imho. You survive loads of tricky situations, bought meat at every merchant, and still you starve, useless :(

I seem to be stuck on a level because the switch to open the switch gate is behind the switch gate. Is there any way to solve this?

My idea for how to make an extended game is to use nethack's idea of bringing the mcguffin back to the top with a new tier of high powered opponents in addition to the normal ones.

@Laurapalooza Are you 100% sure you were not slowed? That would stop you from moving diagonally. A fire mage does deal more damage to most enemies in the ice caves, but there are a bunch of things there that deal high damage back. Use burst of flames for the range, and fire ball for the AoE to clear wolves.

Tip: Enchanter confusion can also effect himself. Another tip confusion is a pain in the ass effect especially when you're in battle.

I just wanted to comment that Necromancer is by far the easiest class, not only because of their skeletons (which are great don't get me wrong) but because of LIFE SPIKE. Not only can a level 3 life spike kill pretty much every enemy in a single hit, but it heals you for the same amount of damage, pretty much putting you back at full health. Combine that with Cannibalism and you have basically infinite resources. If you want to play Necromancer, I recommend putting most of your skill points in Focus, and get Life Spike and Focus to level 3 as soon as possible. Get Summon Skeleton sometime too.

%&! this game. I finally had a great character, except I never found any food. Ever. Not a single one. I bought all the food from every merchant, I used wishes for food twice, and I eventually starved to death.

I finally beat it. Mostly because of luck though (i got two rings of health and a greater staff of storms, and my first side quest was the sewers). The game plays VERY differently if you are lucky enough to get a side quest before the first major difficulty spike. My 18th try I got one at level 9 (i think) and then i also got a second side quest - allowing me to stock up hugely on treasure to trade for skills. I feel that the game experience is far more dependant on the RNG than on character build style, and this is frustrating for me. I really enjoyed the side quest element though.
Some other rouge-likes I have played have allowed you to save a single item for the next run through, in case you die. I feel like something like that could work for this game, have a randomly spawning chest that you can drop an item into to keep it safe for the next game, so that if you die the next character you create can go find the chest and get the item. :)

Tips for ranger
1. Get sprint , then work on getting strafe attack, and tunnel shot
2. Put all points on range, then fort. Put some on fort if you occasionally drop below 25% hp
3. Exp boosts are turn based, use them when there are plenty of pickups/monsters
4. Hunger is turn based. Use sprint to save turns and health pools to heal. Also leveling up heals you to full
5. Use item granting to get a charm first, then equips
6. Save your gold on meat, hp pots (+4 max hp), skill and talent points. I recommend selling mp pots and wands
7. Keep two blinks on you in case of emergencies. You'll want to heal when you drop below 25% hp because of sudden deaths
8. When going down a floor, use your abilities on nearby monsters and then retreat upstairs. Monsters beside the stairs will follow you up, so you can isolate them. Go down when your cooldowns are up
9. I feel the optional side floors helped a lot. You can try the stair strategy for these if you are really struggling but want extra loot

necromancer is the easiest class for me to beat this game with. you can use toxic spike on your own allies, mix that up with charm and you can leech the charmed enemies. watch out for that ice golem though. he repells particles

After about an hour, I had a level 17 fire mage that was on floor 13 of the Vault of Yendor. I attack an enemy while at full health with fire ball, only to have it reflect and kill me instantly.

Found this game a few weeks ago and have been playing it every chance I have, really great fun. The balance of the different gameplay elements is just right, so that sometimes things may seem stupid and impossible, but if you think carefully there is almost always a way out. Outstanding design, especially for something procedurally generated, and a great challenge. A great game to waste time on, thanks!

Got the trophy using fire mage with charm and greater lightning staff (AoE makes things much easier just don't stand in water). Strafe attack was very useful as well definitely a talent to invest in so you can run and attack. I think there's a lot of luck involved depending on whether you get good drops, but not sure.

I'm sure everyone agrees that the barbarian is just not good. Sure he has some skill spam in a big fight, but melee skills aren't really good enough for it to be worth all the downsides of the class. The only thing that makes him playable is that he comes with Strafe Attack. How about if Rage gave strength instead of just melee mastery (so it also increases max hp temporarily), and maybe some melee life tap (rage/2, rounded down)? This would allow him to thrive in big fights, surrounded by the enemy, with a cleave weapon, like a barbarian is supposed to do.

Way too random... I mean I understand it's a roguelike but dying all the time to random difficulty spikes? No thank you!

When there is an ice bomb on screen, I often will not be able to move. Am I missing something? Is that supposed to happen?
Sounds like you got slowed by an ice attack. Slow prevents you from moving diagonally and the game will ignore clicks that would be diagonal (normally resulting in 2 orthogonal steps), in order to prevent you from moving to a spot you didn't intend. If this is the issue, you should still be able to move normally as long as you just click the orthogonal directions.

I like roguelikes but this one is way too random... being jumped by 7+ mobs on the second floor with no chance of survival is fun for no one.

@Laurapalooza Being swarmed when you go down stairs can leave few safe options, as it makes it hard to play around the terrain like you normally would to clear out large groups. If that happens, use the stair dancing tactic. Any enemies next to the stairs when you use them will be moved with you. You can use this to fight smaller groups/individual enemies, and to rest to restore cool downs or HP/MP.

@Ghotch That is the message I am talking about. When you see that message, on that level will be a timed gate. Try not to rest before you find it, as that will waste a lot of turns.

@Stephen595 unfortunately this is when i HAVE invested greatly in fortitude. i haven't been paying enough attention to be honestly, mostly just being annoyed i was killed in one hit. i have noticed at quite low levels i'm also coming across sudden groups of 10+ enemies (was lvl 6 just now and immediately upon heading down a set of stairs had 9 powerful enemies jump me). seems a bit...unbalanced?

If you find "well of wishing" or "scroll for summon item", quit and save. Then continue and use item/well, chose what you need. Refresh page if get junk. Repeat.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
@Stephen595 I will keep a lookout for that message. So far, the only one I've noticed is the message about a noise in the distance of the gate shutting.

@Laurapalooza What is one-shotting you? The most common source of high damage is if you are on unstable ground - you take critical hits from every melee/ranged attack. Another idea is to consider investing in more HP - an extremely common build for every class is to put 10 skill points in fortitude first. (10, as that is the cap in the steam version, introduced because 20 skill points into fortitude made mages too tanky).

@Ghotch When you enter a floor with a timed gate a message will pop up informing you that a gate is slowly closing. The gate starts open, and after a certain number of turns - I tested it once and got 200 - the gate shuts permanently.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
There was an embarrassingly long period of time when I thought the fountains and stone doors were decorated with spots I just couldn't see.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I don't understand the timed gate mechanic. It seems like I enter a floor and the gate shuts without explaining how I can get through it next time. It's confusing, in my opinion.

Just a heads up for people using the necromancer skelli spam strategy:
When you have 27 skeletons, don't go to a new floor, the game may crash.
