There should be a notification next to a catalog whenever you can purchase a new upgrade thing. Like a little red exclamation mark just to show you have enough money.

Very good game, you get loads of stuff I thought I finished buying everything, but when I brought the expansion from the Bonus Shop I just screamed at the prices!!!!
