the name is actually well-chosen if you take the time to read up on what a supernova actually is. the bright or very bright objects appearing in the sky, for which the names "novae" and "supernovae" were made, were originally thought to be new stars (or supersized new stars). now, with the advances in astronomy, we know that a nova is actually not a flash of ignition of a new star but the final gasp of one in it's final hours, literally going out with a bang. so for flash, something that lived and shone for over 20 years, an incredibly long time for software, supernova now comes at the and of its life for a final bright burst of activity and attention as the game makers slowly turn away and start learning html5.
