they removed the gender option because people could replace the text with anything (including links) and it would show up on their profile. nobody knows why it accepted text inputs tho

Kongregate should allow gender as it as just as neutral as location. Someone writing other than what's specified is a malfunction of the code. Female/Male because other options would make it open to trolling as previously stated.

If you want to limit it, it should at least be female, male and nonbinary. Of course a freetext field would work - it's not like it would be THAT difficult to filter down the input to an allowed safe character set (say, letters, numbers, space, comma, period, asterisk and apostrophe - this should pretty much cover any possible gender expression). A site who can't manage either should probably just shut down its communication features because those would then most likely be equally unsafe. Oh wait...
