This means you are able to have Two Genes on any Pet. You can have up to 3 Genetics on any Pet. If you have 3/6/9 of a Gene in a Battle you get a certain effect which can be seen in Codex.

You can have (by purchasing slots in Shop) up to 140 Pets Total.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't understand the message properly. I think every Pet can be obtained through breeding but I saw that (at least in 1-40 pet in codex you need to breed with previous pet (highest chance of getting new pet is by having 2 of the previous ID pet breed.) However, at ID 35 I decided it'll be better to use Gem Shop Pet Coupons as whatever I tried was giving 0.01% chance of pet. So I bought my way to get several Pets. I'm still missing around 11 pets.

If you can, always do Hardest version of the Boss whether it's Asylum or Raid. 1 Cost gives you very little amount of resource while the most expensive battle gives a Lot

As far as I know (I've got pets with over 1400 Power) there's no cap. To get the best team possible you will want monsters with great Genetics and with setup so all of the useful ones are buffed to Max (9 Genes in Battle Team).

I'd like to clarify that I'm looking for the 'soft cap', the point at which returns are diminishing or evolution slows dramatically.

There's not real soft cap after which you won't be able to make Pet stronger however you can (and should) discover Gen Effects and make your Battle Teams around it. I'd say that you should change monster whenever you have a new one with 30-40% higher value once you reach monsters at 500 Power.
You can make any weak Pet as strong as your main team by breeding a weak pet with strong one so have two monsters constantly breeding for Stat Value increase. Once the Pet Stat Value is good enough, you can breed with whatever Pet you want the Genes from to get good Battle/Support Pet. Support Pets should always have Three Equal Genes.

Yo !
I have supposedly unlocked a second genetic slot a couple of days ago (with hatchery level going above twenty), but have no idea on how to get pets to have an actual second genetic trait. Any pointers ?

I don't know the chance for a pet to have two or three Genetics but the best tip is to just Breed and Hatch eggs, eventually you will see pet with 2/3 Genes. But the second and third gene is chosen randomly out of the Gene Info. Using pets that have 2/3 genes to breed doesn't seem to affect the chance of getting another pet with more Genes.

I can confirm pets have no soft cap up to at least 1 million, and pet growth begins to have a much higher upper limit to how much each pet can gain as you get higher up.

And how are you sure that Pets can go over 1m? I recently got my Battle Team to Power 1800+ as it's kinda hard to get wanted Genes on a Pet. Did you manage to get Pets with 1M Power?

Should I ONLY be breeding the same pets together? Is there no benefit to trying to hybridize?

Yes, you should breed two of the Same Pet if you want a new pet. Hybrid Pets are needed when you want to have a specific Gene Effect at its strongest form. Battle Pets should have Genes that allow them to fight.

Yes, with the exception of sentinel who has 3 pets (blue, red, yellow).

Maybe i'm missing something important, but is a pet with multiple genetics going to have two symbols by it's level or is there a screen for looking at a specific pet's stats that i am missing.
Edit: Finally hatched a two genetic egg, it has two symbols near the level number.

Anyone have an idea of how to get pets 56, 57, and 59?
I figure it is a secret trick, that requires you to do something somewhere else in the game, kinda like 58.
Also, I feel the drop rate on the yellow Sentinel is insanely high - maybe I'm just unlucky.

Things I've tried:
Revisiting the secret areas.
Fighting Qoxzul (a lot).
Clicking Lava (a lot).
Playing Hoops.
